The Good
The 2002 CL-Class offers impressive performance from its V8 and V12 engines, providing effortless acceleration. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride, enhanced by Active Body Control, cater to emotional desires for prestige. While not the most efficient, it's reasonably reliable with proper maintenance. Practical buyers appreciate its timeless design and relatively lower used market price compared to its original MSRP.
The Bad
The 2002 CL-Class is known for potential issues with its complex electronics and hydraulic Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, which can be expensive to repair. Rust can be a concern in certain climates. Other common issues include transmission problems, particularly in earlier models, and general electrical glitches. Thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?
Transmission problems, especially rough shifting or complete failure, have been reported, particularly in earlier production models. Rust can develop on the undercarriage and body panels, especially in regions with harsh winters or coastal climates. Engine oil leaks are also not uncommon, particularly around the valve cover gaskets and oil pan. There were some recalls related to electrical components and fuel system components, so checking the VIN for outstanding recall work is crucial. Long-term reliability is heavily dependent on regular and diligent maintenance. Neglecting scheduled service can lead to a cascade of expensive repairs. The complexity of the vehicle makes it difficult and costly to diagnose and repair problems, often requiring specialized tools and expertise. Overall, potential buyers should be prepared for potentially significant maintenance costs with this model.
How long will the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features included Parktronic parking sensors, Keyless Go (keyless entry and start), and massaging seats. The Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, while problematic over time, was a groundbreaking feature that actively managed body roll and provided a smooth ride. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA or IIHS are limited for this specific model year, but the W220 S-Class (which shares many components) received generally good ratings for frontal and side impacts. The CL-Class also featured a robust structure designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision. While lacking modern advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, the 2002 CL-Class offered a solid foundation of safety technology for its era.

How Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Vehicle?
In terms of price on the used market, the CL-Class can be attractive due to its significant depreciation. However, potential buyers should factor in the high maintenance costs. A similar or potentially better alternative, depending on priorities, would be the Lexus SC430. While it may not offer the same level of performance or advanced technology as the CL-Class, it provides superior reliability and lower long-term ownership costs. For those prioritizing performance and willing to gamble on maintenance, the CL55 AMG remains appealing. However, for a more balanced approach, the SC430 or a newer, more reliable luxury coupe might be a wiser choice.

Best performance with comfort car I’ve ever owned.I’m the second owner. I love it, it’s powerful and performs perfectly. I have almost 60K on it, and it’s been modified by Brabus. I don't know about the Brabus improvements and what exactly it did to increase the value and/or performance of the car. I’ve also heard recently that this model was not a good one...

Sexiest car on the road for under 10kBought my 2002 almost a year ago and have fallen in love with everything about this machine. As soon as I purchased it, I had all fluids changed and plugs as car had 97k and didn’t have a lot of history on servicing. That was expensive but heard fluid maintenance on these was very important. Also changed main belt and both radiator hoses using genuine Mercedes parts which are not that expensive. Bottom line is this is a driving experience. Purchased the car super cheap and all in after 1 yr car owes me 11k. Try to find a better used car for 11k. Good luck.

Solid car you can be proud ofRock solid engine when you do the spark plug and coil maintenance. Aluminum frame, Aluminum body parts, interior including dash leather and headliner parts, real wood, and solid switches and dials. Hydraulic suspension is supple and handles like one of the best, but must do the maintenance. Engine and transmission are snappy and fun to drive. Has rear seat and a v12!

Cheapest supercar to buy most expensive to maintaiAmazing car to drive even today! However expect 8 k a year average to keep it running. Navigation is horrible for as expensive this car is. Good news seicane has a perfect touch screen WiFi, back up and front camera update. For 500 bucks . Remember car cost over 120k and while you can get one for under 10k be prepared to pay 120k like repairs. Beast when running, but oil cooler leaks will set you back 8k, ABC tandem pump 4 k, oil sensing unit pulls oil thru thats 8k, abc shocks 1500 each plus installation. Water cooled alternator 1k with install, ignition coils 1500 each side.you get the picture. Oil Changes 200 but every 12k

NOTHING LIKE A GERMAN BUILT V12This automobile is a dream to drive, especially at this price!!! They sold new for over 120,000K and with the V12 you can fill that "BUCKET LIST" car and always be able to say you've owned a V12 and it didn't cost you over a 100,000K.

Great car for the moneyGreat car with awesome interior and exterior styling turns heads and very reliable except for hydraulic suspension system which had to change 2 nitrogen ballasts as the gas membrane dry rots over 15 yrs and blew few lines. Once changed no problems. Also did Ac compressor after 15 yrs. other than that no problems
