The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class represents the pinnacle of Mercedes' luxury coupe offerings. Born from a lineage of prestigious coupes, the CL-Class is a 2-door coupe based on the S-Class sedan. Model years for this generation ran from 2007-2014. Key trims include the CL550, CL600, and the high-performance CL63 AMG. New, they ranged from $110,000 to over $150,000. Its blend of opulent luxury, powerful engines, and striking design made it popular.
The Good

The 2010 CL-Class boasts exhilarating performance from its powerful engines, offering impressive acceleration and handling. Its luxurious interior provides exceptional comfort for long journeys. While reliability can be a concern, the striking design and prestigious image appeal to emotional buyers, while the advanced technology and safety features attract the more practically minded.

The Bad

The 2010 CL-Class is known for its potentially high maintenance costs due to its complex systems. Air suspension issues, electrical glitches, and expensive repairs are common concerns. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the higher-performance models. Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the car's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class often center around its complex air suspension system (Airmatic), which can be prone to leaks and compressor failures, leading to expensive repairs. Electrical glitches, affecting everything from the COMAND system to various sensors, are also common. The CL63 AMG, with its high-performance engine, can experience issues related to oil consumption and cooling. Recalls for this model year have included issues with fuel pump failures and potential problems with the braking system. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the age of the vehicle and the inherent complexity of its systems. Owners often report issues with the hydraulic Active Body Control (ABC) system (if equipped), which can also lead to costly repairs. The sophisticated electronics, while providing numerous features, are also a potential source of problems as the car ages. Early model years in this generation (2007-2009) had more reported instances of certain issues compared to the 2010 model, but preventative maintenance and diligent care are crucial for all years.

How long will the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on diligent maintenance and repair habits. Neglecting scheduled services will significantly shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses over time include the aforementioned air suspension, electrical issues, and potential problems with the engine's cooling system. The leather and interior trim can show wear, and the complex electronics are susceptible to failure. Regular servicing of the transmission, engine, and suspension is critical to ensure long-term durability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class features a range of advanced technology for its time. Standard features include the COMAND system with navigation, a premium sound system (Harmon Kardon or Bang & Olufsen optional), Bluetooth connectivity, and a multi-function steering wheel. Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes, and pre-safe system (which prepares the car for a potential collision). Optional features include night vision assist and blind-spot monitoring. Entertainment features include a DVD player and satellite radio. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS may vary. It's recommended to consult official safety reports for the most accurate and specific information. The Pre-Safe system, a noteworthy feature, can tighten seatbelts, adjust seats, and close windows in anticipation of a collision to minimize occupant injury. The COMAND system, while advanced for its time, can feel dated by modern standards in terms of responsiveness and user interface. Overall, the CL-Class offered a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, and safety features that were considered cutting-edge in 2010.

2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class ranged from approximately $110,000 for the CL550 to over $150,000 for the CL63 AMG and CL600. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The CL-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to its high initial cost, complex maintenance, and reputation for potential reliability issues. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance records, overall condition, mileage, and whether the car has desirable options. Models with complete service history and low mileage command higher prices.

2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is undeniably costly to own. Insurance premiums are high due to the vehicle's value and performance capabilities. Fuel consumption is significant, especially with the AMG and V12 models. Maintenance and repairs can be very expensive due to the car's complex systems and the cost of Mercedes-Benz parts and labor. Long-term ownership requires a substantial budget for upkeep, making it far from an economical choice. Expect frequent visits to specialized mechanics and high bills.

2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class competed with luxury coupes like the BMW 6 Series, Audi A8 (though a sedan), and Bentley Continental GT. The CL-Class offered comparable performance to the 6 Series, particularly the AMG variants, but often at a higher price point. Its features were similar, though the COMAND system could be considered less intuitive than BMW's iDrive. Reliability is a significant point of difference; the BMW 6 Series tends to be more reliable than the CL-Class. The Bentley Continental GT offered even more luxurious appointments and prestige, but at a much higher cost. The Audi A8, while a sedan, offered similar luxury and technology but with the practicality of four doors. For buyers prioritizing reliability and lower running costs, the BMW 6 Series is a better alternative. For those seeking ultimate luxury regardless of cost, the Bentley Continental GT is a step above. If a buyer is set on the CL-Class, a well-maintained example with a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential. It offers a unique blend of luxury, performance, and style, but comes with inherent ownership costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and powerful coupe with a distinctive presence, and who are prepared for potentially high maintenance costs. It's worth buying *used* only if you find a well-maintained example with comprehensive service records and a clean pre-purchase inspection. The CL550 might be the most sensible choice due to its better reliability compared to the AMG and V12 models, but enthusiasts may still be drawn to the performance of the CL63 AMG. Be prepared for significant upkeep expenses, making it a purchase for those with a comfortable budget and a passion for luxury cars.

The best car I have owned

Great timeless design, ride, power, finish, features, quiet. I still love it. Turns heads. But after 8 yrs, maintenance is getting expensive - engine mounts, seals, brakes, etc. If you buy it used, expect to spend $2k/yr to maintain it.

CL63 AMG

I bought a 2010 as it is the last year of the normal aspirated 6.2 engine that is widely considers the best AMG engine to date. First the negatives, a couple of gadgets don't work. The rear screen, parking sensors and seat massage is intermittent. Everything else is as new. Blindingly fast for a two ton plus coupe. Flat body control even on comfort. Silent...unless you turn up the volume with your right foot. All controls are very intuitive. Interior very shackle with no wear on it after ten years and 120,000 miles! I went with a 63 over the V12 65 due to concerns over repair/maint costs for roughly a 0.1 sec to 60mph. Also I've had an SL65 and although it was awesome, it did have some common sensor issues. So in summary, great car at a great price (when purchased used) I'd highly recommend!

Fantastic car at an affordable price.

This car has been my favorite car to own and drive. I've owned it for over a year with no major issues. The engine and transmission feel like they're brand new even though the car has 100k miles. Interior quality is second to none. Even the paint is of such good quality that the car looks new after 8 years. There aren't enough good things I could say about this car. Nothing like driving a $120k car for the price of Toyota Corolla.

The most solid well built car I've ever had.

The CL550 with its 8 cylinder engine that you can depend on. This car is so solid and the interior and exterior styling is second to non. Its the best used car for the money. Brand new the price was for a lot of people unaffordable. Now its fantastic.
