For the emotional buyer, it's a statement of success. For the practical buyer, it's a well-engineered luxury coupe offering a unique driving experience, though reliability can be a concern.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?
Recalls for the 2001 CL-Class are relatively limited, but it's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Long-term reliability is a significant concern, particularly as the cars age and components begin to fail. Corrosion can also be an issue, particularly in areas with harsh winters where road salt is used. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes and addressing issues promptly, is crucial to mitigate some of these problems, but the CL-Class remains a potentially high-maintenance vehicle.
How long will the 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
In terms of driver-assistance features, the CL-Class had Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and rain-sensing wipers. The Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, while prone to issues, also contributed to a more comfortable and controlled ride. Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as seatbelt pretensioners.
While specific crash-test ratings for the 2001 CL-Class may be limited, Mercedes-Benz vehicles of that era generally performed well in safety tests. The CL-Class was designed with a robust structure and incorporated various safety technologies to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Overall, the 2001 CL-Class offered a compelling blend of luxury, technology, and safety features for its time.

How Does the 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Sedan?
However, the CL-Class falls short in reliability compared to the Lexus SC430, which is known for its dependability. The BMW 8 Series, while also luxurious, shares the CL's potential for high maintenance costs. In terms of price, a used CL-Class may seem attractive, but potential repair bills should be considered.
As alternatives, the Lexus SC430 offers similar luxury with far greater reliability, making it a more sensible choice for many buyers. The BMW 6 Series (later models) could also be considered, offering a sportier driving experience but with similar maintenance concerns. Ultimately, the CL-Class is appealing for its unique blend of performance and luxury, but buyers must be prepared for potentially high ownership costs.
