The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is a luxury coupe, part of the second generation (W215) produced from 2000-2006. Key trims included the CL500, CL600, and high-performance CL55 AMG and CL65 AMG. Known for its pillarless hardtop design and advanced technology, it offered a blend of performance and luxury. Original pricing ranged from $90,000 to over $150,000 depending on the trim. Its distinctive styling and powerful engines made it a popular choice among luxury car enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2005 CL-Class delivers potent performance, especially in AMG variants, and boasts a comfortable, luxurious interior. The elegant, pillarless coupe design appeals emotionally, while features like standard air suspension provide a smooth ride. Although not particularly efficient, the value proposition lies in its advanced features and prestigious image at a lower used price point. It's for those seeking a blend of luxury and performance on a budget.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is known for its potential reliability issues, particularly concerning the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system. This system is prone to leaks and pump failures, leading to costly repairs. Electrical problems are also frequently reported, affecting systems like the central locking, windows, and infotainment. The V12 engines, while powerful, are also more complex and expensive to maintain than the V8. Rust can be an issue in areas with harsh winters or coastal climates.

Some model years within the W215 generation had recalls related to the fuel system and electrical components. Check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to the VIN of any vehicle you are considering.

Long-term reliability is a significant concern, as the advanced technology and complex systems can become problematic as the car ages. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial to mitigating these concerns, but high repair costs are almost inevitable over the long run. The car is now nearly two decades old, so expect potential issues with aging components like rubber seals, hoses, and plastic parts.

How long will the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?

Given their age, most 2005 CL-Class models have accumulated significant mileage, often exceeding 150,000 miles. Years of service depend heavily on maintenance. Well-maintained examples can last beyond 200,000 miles or 20 years, but deferred maintenance will significantly shorten their lifespan. Long-term durability is challenged by the aging ABC suspension, electrical systems, and potential rust. Weaknesses include the high cost of replacement parts and the complexity of repairs. Owners should prioritize addressing hydraulic and electrical issues promptly to maximize longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class came equipped with a range of advanced technology for its time. Standard features included a COMAND system with navigation, a premium sound system (often Bose), dual-zone climate control, and power-adjustable seats with memory. Entertainment options included a CD changer and sometimes a DVD player.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars, but included features like cruise control, parktronic (parking sensors), and rain-sensing wipers. Safety features consisted of anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Optional features could include Distronic (adaptive cruise control), Keyless Go, and upgraded leather upholstery. The ABC suspension system itself was a form of advanced technology contributing to ride comfort and handling.

Crash-test ratings from agencies like NHTSA and IIHS are limited for this specific model year. However, Mercedes-Benz vehicles of this era generally performed well in crash tests, offering good occupant protection due to their robust construction and safety features. Modern standards are considerably higher, though.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class ranged from approximately $90,000 for the CL500 to over $150,000 for the CL65 AMG. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Depreciation has been substantial due to the high cost of maintenance and potential repairs. Factors affecting resale value include the condition of the ABC suspension, the presence of rust, the completeness of service records, and the overall cosmetic appearance. AMG models generally hold their value better than the standard CL500 due to their performance pedigree.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are moderate but can increase with higher-performance AMG models. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V12 engines. Maintenance and repairs are expensive due to the complex systems and luxury components. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial, primarily due to potential issues with the ABC suspension and electrical systems. This car is far from economical and best suited for those prepared for potentially high upkeep expenses.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class competed with luxury coupes like the BMW 6 Series, Jaguar XK, and Lexus SC. In terms of performance, the AMG variants rivaled or surpassed competitors, particularly in acceleration. Feature-wise, the CL-Class offered comparable levels of luxury and technology. However, reliability is a significant disadvantage compared to the Lexus SC, which is known for its dependability. The BMW 6 Series offered a sportier driving experience but also suffered from similar reliability concerns. The Jaguar XK provided a stylish alternative but also had its own set of maintenance challenges.

Considering reliability and long-term ownership costs, the Lexus SC430 is a better alternative for buyers prioritizing dependability. If performance is paramount and budget allows, a newer BMW 6 Series or Audi S5 might be preferable, though they will come at a higher price point. A meticulously maintained CL-Class can be appealing, but potential buyers must be aware of the inherent risks associated with its complex systems and aging components. For those seeking a luxurious coupe on a budget, and are prepared to deal with maintenance, the CL-Class is an option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class a Good Vehicle?

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate its unique styling, powerful engines (especially in AMG trims), and luxurious features, and who are comfortable with the potential for high maintenance costs. It's generally not worth buying for those seeking a reliable and economical daily driver. If considering a purchase, a well-maintained example with comprehensive service records is crucial. Pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is highly recommended. Lower mileage is preferable, but documented maintenance is more important. Be prepared for potentially expensive repairs, especially concerning the ABC suspension. Used only, and with extreme caution.

CL 600

I have owned several Mercedes in the past. The CL600 is truly a European Supercar. Driving it brings resources to your fingertips and feet that simply do not exist in most other cars.

stupid fast but very heavy

My cl 55 amg is a 2004 with 62,000 miles on it. I have done fuel system upgrades, cooling upgrades, ECU STAGE 3 upgrade, and methanol injection. I got rid of the rediculously expensive to repair ABC suspension and went with adjustable coilovers. The car is stupid fast and incredibly heavy, so the huge AMG brakes and the new Michelin 4s tires are the only thing keeping me alive so far. Incedibly beautiful 16 mpg car, but the physics of weight (4500 lbs.) and high speed will bite you if you aren't a skilled driver. Do not be overconfident in your abilities with this car. It is a beast. But, BUY ONE !!!!! NOW!!!

Collector Car

This model will be a collector car. When you drive down the road you get respect and jelousy. Sometimes being a Mercedes it will fascinate lunatic manic personality traits in other vehichles. Overall the hydraulic pump for the ABC is 2800cdn installed and the struts are 875.00 aftermarket cdn. You do the math.. 8k to completely redo your suspension or buy this super cruiser for 15k and put 8k into it, way less than the depreciation on any car. Most American cars lose 40 percent of initial value after a couple years and are rusted. My car has no rust, no depreciation and just requires patience. The CL being an S class is also one of the safest cars on the planet to drive. In a catastrophic accident the engine and transmission are designed to break away from the car at over 150mph. Top speed is 260kmh and they all will do it effertlessly.

2005 Mercedes cl55 amg

This car is just about the best buy available at the present time. The combination of performance, elegance, handling and braking is INTOXICATING! You only need to drive one to understand. As with any car you need to do your homework and cars.com is one of many resources available. Also I HIGHLY recommend having ANY high end performance vehicle checked by a dealership so you know where you stand. Silver State Imports in Raleigh NC was most helpful in helping me with this and I recommend it and them. It will cost you $150.00 to $200.00 (more or less) but its money well spent on a used high performance luxury automobile.

2005 Mercedes CL 65 AMG

I ended up purchasing a 2005 Mercedes CL 65 AMG. I never imagined myself owning a Mercedes but I am loving this car. It is a flat out rocket ship! Has great comfort, handling and space. The audio system is a little dated (has no aux input). Parts and maintance are crazy expensive for this car so if you don't have a warranty find a good independent mechanic or get ready to turn some wrenches yourself. All in all an awesome car and there are some GREAT deals to be had out there. -LeoD

Near perfection

This car is simply AMAZING. I could write a book about the joy that it has been to own one. I did not give it five stars on reoiability becaust a car that costs barely this side of 200 Grand and it as meticuously maintaned as mine, should never have anything go wrong it even if when it seldom does, you are nor fully stranded. And to make marrres worse, the repairs and/or replacement parts cost as much as those of a space shuttle. Alsp, beware of the dealers; you would thimk differently but they more often than mot treat you with arrogance and as if to you, money means nothing. Find a trustworthy independent garage; you will be a much happier owner. The cars are luxury to the max, but don't scream "look at me; I am cool". And the performance...undescribable! Particularly when it weighs more than 5000 lbs. If you buy used, beware; DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!

Excellent

This is one of the best cars I have ever owned. It has poise, power and reliability with enough toys to keep the most bored driver out of mischief. Petrol costs are extortionate - but the performance makes every penny woth it. The party piece is winding down all the windows. No B pillar makes it completely open.

CL65 is amazing!!!

Huge power! Huge torque! Total comfort! This is the real ultimate cruise mobile. The Mercedes quality is hard to beat especially for an every day driver like the CL65. I sold the CL55 to get this and think this is twice the car as the CL55.
