The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class represents the pinnacle of luxury coupes, building on a lineage known for opulence and performance. A two-door hardtop coupe, the CL-Class, in its W216 generation (2007-2014), offered flagship S-Class levels of comfort in a sportier package. Key trims included the CL550, CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG. When new, pricing ranged from around $112,000 to over $210,000. Its blend of powerful engines, opulent interior, and sleek styling made it a popular choice for discerning buyers.
The Good

The 2011 CL-Class delivers exhilarating performance with potent engine options and a refined ride. Its luxurious interior ensures exceptional comfort for long journeys. The elegant design provides a head-turning presence. For emotional buyers, the prestige and power are appealing. Practical buyers appreciate the advanced safety features and surprisingly reasonable (for its class) reliability if well-maintained.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2011 CL-Class include potentially high maintenance costs due to its complex systems. Air suspension issues are common and can be expensive to repair. Electrical gremlins can also surface. Be wary of deferred maintenance; a neglected CL-Class can quickly become a money pit. Look for rust, especially in areas prone to corrosion.

What Problems Does the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class often revolve around its complex air suspension system (Airmatic). Leaks in the air struts and compressor failures are relatively common and can be costly to repair. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors, control modules, and display screens, also tend to surface. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and oil cooler lines, are another area of concern, especially as the car ages.
Long-term reliability hinges heavily on diligent maintenance. Neglecting scheduled service can lead to cascading failures. The AMG models, while offering exhilarating performance, generally require more frequent and expensive maintenance due to the higher stress on their components.
Recalls can be checked via the NHTSA website using the VIN. Common recall items for similar Mercedes-Benz models from this era often related to fuel system components, airbags, and braking systems. It's crucial to verify that any outstanding recalls have been addressed before purchasing a used 2011 CL-Class.
Specifically for the 2011 model year, there aren't overwhelmingly unique issues compared to other years within the W216 generation, but the age of the vehicle means wear and tear is a primary consideration. Thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is strongly recommended.

How long will the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?

With good maintenance, a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 12-15 years of service. However, this is highly dependent on consistent upkeep. Poor maintenance can drastically shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is impacted by the aforementioned air suspension and electrical problems. The engines themselves are generally robust, but preventative maintenance is key to avoid major repairs. Rust can also become an issue in colder climates where road salt is used. Regular detailing, rustproofing, and addressing minor issues promptly will extend its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class boasts a comprehensive suite of built-in technology. Standard features include a COMAND infotainment system with navigation, a premium sound system (Harmon Kardon or Bang & Olufsen optional), Bluetooth connectivity, and a multi-function display. Entertainment options include a CD/DVD player and satellite radio.
Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control (Distronic Plus), blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and park assist. Night View Assist, which uses infrared technology to enhance visibility in low-light conditions, was an optional feature.
Safety features are paramount, with standard equipment including anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, multiple airbags (including side and curtain airbags), and a pre-safe system that anticipates collisions and prepares the car and occupants.
The 2011 CL-Class did not undergo full crash testing by the IIHS or NHTSA. However, the S-Class sedan, upon which it is based, generally received high marks for safety, and the CL-Class shares many of the same safety features and structural components. Optional features like the Driver Assistance Package further enhanced safety. Overall, the 2011 CL-Class offered a high level of safety technology for its time.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class ranged from approximately $112,000 for the CL550 to over $210,000 for the CL65 AMG. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, generally falling between $15,000 and $40,000. The CL-Class has depreciated considerably due to its high initial cost and potentially high maintenance expenses. Factors affecting resale value include: documented service history, low mileage, clean title, desirable options (like AMG models or specific interior colors), and overall condition. Models with deferred maintenance or high mileage will command significantly lower prices.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and high repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V12 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly for the air suspension and complex electronics. Parts are often expensive, and labor rates at qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanics are also high. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated budget for potential repairs and preventative maintenance.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class competed with luxury coupes like the BMW 6 Series, Audi A8 (though a sedan), and Bentley Continental GT. In terms of performance, the AMG models were competitive with the Bentley and offered more power than the BMW or Audi. Features were comparable across these models, all offering high levels of luxury and technology. However, the CL-Class generally lags behind the BMW 6 Series in terms of reported reliability.
In terms of price, the CL-Class was positioned similarly to the Bentley Continental GT when new, but used models are now significantly more affordable. The BMW 6 Series and Audi A8 generally offer better value on the used market due to lower maintenance costs and improved reliability. Similar alternatives to the CL-Class include the BMW 650i coupe, Audi S8 (for similar power and luxury in a sedan), or a newer Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe (if budget allows).
If reliability is a major concern, the BMW 6 Series may be a better choice. If outright luxury and exclusivity are desired, the Bentley Continental GT remains a top contender, albeit at a higher price point. The CL-Class offers a compelling blend of luxury, performance, and style, but potential buyers should be prepared for potentially high ownership costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class a Good Coupe?

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is ideal for enthusiasts seeking a luxurious and powerful coupe with distinctive styling. It's worth buying *used* if you are prepared for potentially high maintenance costs and prioritize luxury over long-term reliability. Consider a well-maintained CL550 or CL600 if you want a balance of performance and relative affordability. The AMG models offer exhilarating performance but require deeper pockets for upkeep.
Thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Ensure all scheduled maintenance is up-to-date and budget for potential repairs, particularly to the air suspension. If you're seeking worry-free ownership, a newer and less complex vehicle might be a better choice. But for those who appreciate the unique blend of luxury and performance, the 2011 CL-Class can be a rewarding, albeit potentially demanding, ownership experience.
