The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze is a compact sedan that was part of the first generation (2008-2016) of this model. Key trims included the LS, LT, LTZ, and Eco. It gained popularity for its fuel efficiency, particularly the Eco model, its relatively comfortable interior, and its availability of features at a reasonable price point. New prices ranged from around $17,000 to $25,000 depending on trim and options. It was designed to appeal to buyers seeking a practical and economical daily driver.
The Good

The 2013 Cruze offers a good blend of practical and emotional appeal. Its efficiency (especially the Eco model) makes it economical. Its value proposition is a strong selling point for budget-conscious buyers.

The Bad

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze has some known weaknesses. Common issues include problems with the turbocharger, coolant leaks, and electrical glitches. What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Have?

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. One of the most common issues is coolant leaks, often stemming from the water pump or thermostat housing. Turbocharger failure is another significant problem, particularly in models equipped with the 1.4L turbo engine. This can lead to reduced power and costly repairs. Electrical problems, such as issues with the infotainment system, sensors, and wiring harnesses, are also reported by owners.
Recalls have been issued for the 2013 Cruze, including those related to potential engine fires and issues with the side airbag inflators. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the aforementioned issues. Owners should pay close attention to maintenance, including regular coolant flushes and oil changes, to help mitigate some of these risks. The PCV valve is known to cause problems when it fails, leading to vacuum leaks. The transmission has also been reported to have issues by some owners. Furthermore, problems with the evaporative emissions system (EVAP) are not uncommon. Addressing these issues proactively can help improve the vehicle's long-term durability.

How long will the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze last?

With good maintenance, a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, achieving this longevity depends heavily on diligent maintenance. Owners who neglect regular servicing, particularly oil changes and coolant flushes, may experience premature failures. The turbocharger is a potential weak point, and its lifespan can be reduced by infrequent oil changes or excessive high-speed driving. Rust can also be an issue in regions with harsh winters. Expect potential issues to arise around the 8-10 year mark, especially with original components like the water pump, turbo, and some electrical systems.
Positive Owner Reviews
G.S.
It's been a reliable and dependable car, other than a waterpump replacement early on, under warranty, it has had no mechanical issues. I purchased this car new from the dealership.
Jim
I bought my 2013 Chevy Cruze ECO 6 years ago with 29K miles and now it has 114K miles. It is fun to drive (6 speed manual), quiet, and gets 44 MPG on my daily commute down mostly secondary country roads. I love the style and comfort and it has been super reliable. I only use full synthetic motor oil because of the turbo and I don't constantly hammer the 4 cylinder engine. The handling on country roads is fun and excellent. Love this car, its a keeper. I just wish GM didn't stop making cars, I mean who wants to drive dump trucks?
Tbare
I love my chevy Cruze Eco it has plenty of leg room front and back and great trunk space. The 1.4 liter turbo is awesome

Problems since day 1 2013 chevy cruze. Screen shuts off randomly and turns back on when it wants. Already spent $1800.00 fixing all my lines due to leaking randomly for no reason and I have regular maintenance done. Now my water pump has gone. Not even 10 years old Piece of crap!
Agrivated
We have had nothing but problems from this car. We purchased this car last year. Four months into buying this car the thermostat stopped working and had to be replaced. The car lasted another four months and the thermostat stopped working again. Several weeks later the turbo stopped working and had to be replaced. Several weeks after that, it blew a head gasket.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze offers a reasonable array of technology, entertainment, and safety features for its time.
Tech & Entertainment: Standard models include a basic audio system with AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims feature Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration. Optional features included navigation and a premium audio system.
Driver-Assistance: The 2013 Cruze doesn't have advanced driver-assistance systems common in newer cars. However, it included standard features like stability control and anti-lock brakes. Higher trims offered features like rear parking sensors.
Safety Features: All Cruze models come with 10 standard airbags, including front, side, and knee airbags. OnStar provided automatic crash response and emergency services.
Crash Test Ratings: The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze generally performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall safety rating of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating, indicating good performance in various crash tests. Always verify specific ratings for the model year and body style on the official NHTSA and IIHS websites.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze had an MSRP ranging from approximately $17,000 for the base LS model to around $25,000 for a fully loaded LTZ. As a used car, prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim. Expect to find them priced anywhere from $4,000 to $9,000 depending on the factors above.
The Cruze has experienced significant depreciation, typical for compact sedans. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, accident record, mileage, and overall condition. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records will command higher prices. The Eco model may hold slightly better value due to its fuel efficiency.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze generally offers reasonable ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically moderate. Fuel costs are relatively low, especially for the Eco model. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential issues with the turbocharger, coolant system, and electrical components. Long-term ownership can be economical if preventative maintenance is performed diligently. Neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs that offset any initial savings on fuel. Parts availability is generally good.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a 2LT with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Compare to Other 2LT?

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze competes with other compact sedans like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Cruze is adequate but not sporty compared to the Mazda3 or Ford Focus. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable set of options for its price point.
However, the Cruze's reliability is generally considered lower than the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, which are known for their longevity and fewer reported issues. The Hyundai Elantra offers a similar value proposition with a slightly better warranty. The Ford Focus (especially with the problematic dual-clutch transmission) can have reliability issues too.
Alternatives to the Cruze include:
  • Honda Civic: More reliable, better resale value.
  • Toyota Corolla: Excellent reliability, good fuel economy.
  • Hyundai Elantra: Good value, long warranty.
  • Mazda3: Sportier handling, more engaging driving experience.

If reliability is a top priority, the Civic or Corolla are better choices. If you're looking for a sportier drive, the Mazda3 is a good option. If value is paramount, the Elantra offers a compelling alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze a Good 2LT?

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze can be a decent option for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and fuel-efficient compact sedan. However, it's crucial to be aware of its potential reliability issues. It's best suited for those who prioritize initial cost savings over long-term reliability and are prepared for potential repairs.
It's generally worth considering only as a used vehicle due to its age and depreciation. Before buying, thoroughly inspect the car for common issues like coolant leaks, turbocharger problems, and electrical glitches. Look for well-maintained examples with detailed service records. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to assess the vehicle's condition and identify any potential problems. Be cautious about the 1.4L turbo engine due to potential issues.

Worst engine built.

Worst engine built. Everything is plastic. Turbo cracked. Coolant exploded. I have never had a worse car. It's a good car for small family. Only the money spent on repairs outweighs that 1 positive.

2013 Cruze LS 1.8L

I owned a 2013 LS from 2013-2020. I had the 1.8 L which seems to have less problems than the 1.4 turbo. From the years I owned it the water pump needed to be replaced and regular maintenance. As the base model the interior wasn’t the greatest but it was meant to get me from A to B. I eventually traded it in for a 2020 equinox. Overall the Cruze did well for me.

Terrible car!

This is absolutely the worst car I’ve ever owned. I have had issues with this car since I’ve driven it off the lot. It has stalled three times in the middle of traffic within a span of less than 6 months. Do not buy this car! Will not be buying another Chevy ever
