The Good
The 2002 PT Cruiser's advantages included its unique retro design (emotional appeal), spacious and versatile interior (practicality), and relatively affordable price. While not a performance car, it offered adequate power for daily driving. For some, the retro styling made it a head-turner, while others appreciated the car's cargo capacity and high seating position.
The Bad
Known weaknesses of the 2002 PT Cruiser included its engine reliability, particularly the non-turbocharged versions. Suspension components, especially struts and bushings, were prone to wear. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors and faulty wiring, were also commonly reported. Rust, especially in colder climates, was another concern to watch out for.

What Problems Does the 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Have?
Recalls for the 2002 PT Cruiser addressed issues like potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel lines and concerns regarding the windshield wiper system's functionality. Long-term reliability concerns centered on the engine's longevity, the transmission's durability (especially the automatic), and the susceptibility to rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Specific issues for the 2002 model year were similar to those reported across the early PT Cruiser production run, including concerns regarding the timing belt interval and proper maintenance to prevent engine damage.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags and optional anti-lock brakes (ABS). Side airbags were not a standard feature in 2002. Optional features included cruise control, power sunroof, and upgraded audio systems. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed acceptable performance, with ratings varying depending on the type of crash test conducted. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should be consulted for a comprehensive overview. The PT Cruiser offered standard safety features for its time, but it lacked the advanced technological aids found in newer vehicles. Given its age, the safety technology is outdated compared to modern standards.

How Does the 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Compare to Other Wagon?
Price-wise, the PT Cruiser was initially competitive, but its rapid depreciation made it a less appealing used car option compared to the more reliable alternatives. Better alternatives include the Toyota Matrix for its reliability and practicality or the Mazda Protege5 for a sportier driving experience and better handling. The Honda Civic hatchback of the same era also represents a more reliable choice. While the PT Cruiser offered unique styling, its reliability issues make these alternatives better choices for most buyers.

PT Cruiser.Currently own a PT Cruiser. Looking for another one as I know how to work on them. I test drove it and it ran well. The transmission shifted smoothly. The only issue I saw was the lenses on the head lights needs to polished.

New to owning it.I have a 2011 HHR and I bought the PT Cruiser for my kids to drive. The PT Cruiser is very similar to the HHR, but as I am performing its first service on it I am finding that all the oil and air filters are much easier to access.

Beautiful leather interior for a first carThis car is extremely comfortable and also has the lightweight engine ratio for it to be not sluggish. Pretty much all the years look the same so if your car is in new condition it can look new.

DO NOT BUY!Bought a 2002 Pt Cruiser that broke down on me within hours of purchase. They fixed the problem only for the car to have constant problems and after 6 months of driving the engine gave out while I was driving. Getting it towed, the auto repair man informed me They call them Part Time Cruisers as in they work part-time!
Patsyduped on April 27, 2018
PatsydupedMore money spent on repairs than any other cars I have owned. You are not notified of recalls and repair shops don't check for recalls.
