2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Review: A Boring Budget Compact That's Not Even the Best Car for the Price

Rating: 4.29
Based on 79 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser is a retro-styled, compact wagon that debuted in the early 2000s. Its design evokes classic American cars. Available trims included base, Limited, and GT (turbocharged). New, it ranged from around $14,000 to $22,000. Its standout feature was its unique "hot rod" look and surprising practicality, appealing to those wanting something different from standard small cars.
The Good

The 2005 PT Cruiser offered a distinctive design that stood out. It's practical, with flexible cargo space. The GT offered a performance boost with its turbo engine. Emotionally, it appealed to those seeking retro styling. Practically, it provided affordable transportation and decent fuel economy.

The Bad

The 2005 PT Cruiser suffered from reliability issues, including electrical problems and engine issues (especially the turbo versions). Interior materials felt cheap. The non-turbo engine could feel underpowered. Rust can also be a problem, particularly in areas with road salt. Be wary of high mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Have?

The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser is known for several frequently reported problems impacting its long-term reliability. Electrical issues are common, affecting everything from power windows and door locks to the car's computer system. Engine problems, particularly with the turbocharged engine in the GT models, are another concern. These can range from oil leaks to more serious failures.
Rust is a significant issue, especially in areas with harsh winters or coastal climates. Check around the wheel wells, door panels, and undercarriage. Suspension components also tend to wear out more quickly than average.
Recalls for the 2005 PT Cruiser have addressed issues such as potential airbag malfunctions, faulty fuel tank valves, and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Overall, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and have any prospective purchase thoroughly inspected by a mechanic.

How long will the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser last?

Given its age, a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser could easily have 150,000-200,000 miles, depending on use and maintenance. Well-maintained examples might reach 250,000 miles. However, many succumb to age-related issues sooner. Key weaknesses include rust, electrical glitches, and potential engine or transmission problems. Consistent oil changes, timely repairs, and rust prevention are crucial for longevity. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Its durability is generally below average compared to more reliable competitors.

This car has everything I was looking for in a car and it runs great. Its got leg room and it gets good gas mileage.

I just bought a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Turbo from a used car dealership in Virginia Beach to replace my 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser (base model) that I had wrecked. I love the PT Cruiser's retro styling and roominess--outwardly, this car looks just like my old car, though it has a bit more bling (chrome detailing). Inside, it's got all the bells and whistles--leather seating, sunroof, heated seats, and a sound system that takes 6 CDs. (Yes, I still listen to my music that way!) Under the hood, I also appreciate the turbo engine, which has LOTS more pickup than my old base model PT. So far, it's been very reliable, though I have only had it for 10 days.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser's built-in tech was basic for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims might offer an upgraded sound system with a cassette player. Driver-assistance features were minimal, primarily consisting of anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option.
Safety features included standard front airbags. Side airbags were optional on some trims. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was also available as an option.
Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied. While it generally performed decently in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was often rated lower. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also conducted tests, and results should be reviewed for a comprehensive safety assessment.
Overall, the PT Cruiser lacked the advanced tech and safety features found in newer vehicles. Its focus was more on retro styling than cutting-edge technology.

2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser ranged from around $14,000 for the base model to $22,000 for a fully equipped GT. Today, used prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to reliability concerns and dated styling. Factors affecting resale value include low mileage, a clean title, good maintenance records, and the absence of rust. The GT models, especially those in good condition, may hold slightly more value due to their turbocharged engines.

2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2005 PT Cruiser are generally affordable. Fuel economy is decent for its class, but not exceptional. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good and affordable, but repairs can add up. Long-term ownership can be costly if major repairs are needed. While initial purchase price is low, potential maintenance offsets some of those savings, making it not the most economical choice.

2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Convertible with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser competed with compact wagons and hatchbacks of its time, such as the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, Scion xB, and even larger cars like the Ford Focus wagon. In terms of performance, the PT Cruiser GT offered competitive power thanks to its turbo engine, but the base engine was underwhelming. Feature-wise, it was generally average for its class.
Reliability is where the PT Cruiser fell short compared to rivals like the Toyota Matrix, which boasted far superior dependability. While the Scion xB offered similar quirky styling, it generally had better reliability too. Price-wise, the PT Cruiser was often competitively priced when new, but its rapid depreciation makes its value proposition questionable now due to potential repair costs.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe for reliability and practicality, the Scion xB for similar styling with potentially better reliability, or even a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for overall dependability and lower running costs. The PT Cruiser mainly appeals to those who love its retro styling despite its drawbacks.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser a Good Convertible?

The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser is ideal for buyers who prioritize unique styling and affordability over reliability and performance. It's worth considering *only* if you find a well-maintained example with low mileage and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues. The GT model offers better performance, but is also more prone to problems. Avoid examples with rust or a history of electrical issues.
Given its age and potential for costly repairs, it's best suited as a short-term, budget-friendly vehicle for someone who understands its limitations and is prepared for potential maintenance. Newer, more reliable alternatives are generally a better long-term investment.

Love my New to Me GT Turbo

I just bought a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Turbo from a used car dealership in Virginia Beach to replace my 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser (base model) that I had wrecked. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!

My grandfather used to own a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible. He would take me around in it. He hated it and I hated it. The first thing is that the key actually broke while in the ignition. We had to get the steering wheel replaced which cost a lot of money. Then, the drop top kept getting stuck on the metal frame, which led to the motor overheating and breaking. Then, the thing that made us get rid of the car: THE BRAKE PEDAL BROKE. The bottom of the pedal snapped off the arm. I am warning you: NEVER BUY THIS CAR!!

Head turner, fun to drive, will always remember it

We had a mid life crisis and needed a convertible. We really wanted to be sporty, and buy something smaller, but we’re old. This really caught our eye. It was always fun to drive especially on a road trip. You can get a surprising amount in the trunk. We loved it being able to seat 4. The bad part, when it needed repair, it was expensive. But otherwise, we really enjoyed owning this and sometimes miss it. We had a lot of fun and don’t regret buying. Be very careful parking because the front ground effects will rip off easily if you park somewhere with a too tall parking beam. That happened 3 times. If we found another one with low mileage, we might consider it.

Very reliable stylish car

We purchased this car new when the convertible was first released. It is fun to drive, especially with the top down. We have had only 2 issues with it over the years, an ac line and the intake manifold upper and lower gasket needed replacing. That was it. Oil changes were always done using full synthetic oil and only premium unleaded gas was used. I love the color scheme of the interior.

A Very Nice Fun Car

It is not a hot rod, but is quite peppy and fun to drive. Very good car, that has required little other then routine maintenance. Its looks are subjective, some like it some dont. I think it has a nice retro look to it, plus it is dependable. Great little car to drive for pleasure.
