The Good
The 2005 PT Cruiser offered a distinctive design that stood out. It's practical, with flexible cargo space. The GT offered a performance boost with its turbo engine. Emotionally, it appealed to those seeking retro styling. Practically, it provided affordable transportation and decent fuel economy.
The Bad
The 2005 PT Cruiser suffered from reliability issues, including electrical problems and engine issues (especially the turbo versions). Interior materials felt cheap. The non-turbo engine could feel underpowered. Rust can also be a problem, particularly in areas with road salt. Be wary of high mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Have?
Rust is a significant issue, especially in areas with harsh winters or coastal climates. Check around the wheel wells, door panels, and undercarriage. Suspension components also tend to wear out more quickly than average.
Recalls for the 2005 PT Cruiser have addressed issues such as potential airbag malfunctions, faulty fuel tank valves, and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Overall, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and have any prospective purchase thoroughly inspected by a mechanic.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags. Side airbags were optional on some trims. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was also available as an option.
Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied. While it generally performed decently in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was often rated lower. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also conducted tests, and results should be reviewed for a comprehensive safety assessment.
Overall, the PT Cruiser lacked the advanced tech and safety features found in newer vehicles. Its focus was more on retro styling than cutting-edge technology.

How Does the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Compare to Other Convertible?
Reliability is where the PT Cruiser fell short compared to rivals like the Toyota Matrix, which boasted far superior dependability. While the Scion xB offered similar quirky styling, it generally had better reliability too. Price-wise, the PT Cruiser was often competitively priced when new, but its rapid depreciation makes its value proposition questionable now due to potential repair costs.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe for reliability and practicality, the Scion xB for similar styling with potentially better reliability, or even a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for overall dependability and lower running costs. The PT Cruiser mainly appeals to those who love its retro styling despite its drawbacks.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser a Good Convertible?
Given its age and potential for costly repairs, it's best suited as a short-term, budget-friendly vehicle for someone who understands its limitations and is prepared for potential maintenance. Newer, more reliable alternatives are generally a better long-term investment.

Love my New to Me GT TurboI just bought a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Turbo from a used car dealership in Virginia Beach to replace my 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser (base model) that I had wrecked. I love the PT Cruiser's retro styling and roominess--outwardly, this car looks just like my old car, though it has a bit more bling (chrome detailing). Inside, it's got all the bells and whistles--leather seating, sunroof, heated seats, and a sound system that takes 6 CDs. (Yes, I still listen to my music that way!) Under the hood, I also appreciate the turbo engine, which has LOTS more pickup than my old base model PT. So far, it's been very reliable, though I have only had it for 10 days.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!My grandfather used to own a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible. He would take me around in it. He hated it and I hated it. The first thing is that the key actually broke while in the ignition. We had to get the steering wheel replaced which cost a lot of money. Then, the drop top kept getting stuck on the metal frame, which led to the motor overheating and breaking. Then, the thing that made us get rid of the car: THE BRAKE PEDAL BROKE. The bottom of the pedal snapped off the arm. I am warning you: NEVER BUY THIS CAR!!

Head turner, fun to drive, will always remember itWe had a mid life crisis and needed a convertible. We really wanted to be sporty, and buy something smaller, but weβre old. This really caught our eye. It was always fun to drive especially on a road trip. You can get a surprising amount in the trunk. We loved it being able to seat 4. The bad part, when it needed repair, it was expensive. But otherwise, we really enjoyed owning this and sometimes miss it. We had a lot of fun and donβt regret buying. Be very careful parking because the front ground effects will rip off easily if you park somewhere with a too tall parking beam. That happened 3 times. If we found another one with low mileage, we might consider it.

Very reliable stylish carWe purchased this car new when the convertible was first released. It is fun to drive, especially with the top down. We have had only 2 issues with it over the years, an ac line and the intake manifold upper and lower gasket needed replacing. That was it. Oil changes were always done using full synthetic oil and only premium unleaded gas was used. I love the color scheme of the interior.

A Very Nice Fun CarIt is not a hot rod, but is quite peppy and fun to drive. Very good car, that has required little other then routine maintenance. Its looks are subjective, some like it some dont. I think it has a nice retro look to it, plus it is dependable. Great little car to drive for pleasure.
