The Porsche 718 Boxster, a mid-engine roadster, carries Porsche's sports car legacy forward. The 2023 model continues the 718 lineage, offering open-top thrills and precise handling. Key trims include the base Boxster, Boxster S, Boxster GTS 4.0, and Boxster T. The pricing ranges from approximately $68,000 to over $100,000, depending on the trim and options. Its agile handling, powerful engines, and iconic Porsche styling make it a popular choice for driving enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster offers exhilarating performance and sharp handling, appealing to the emotional driver. Its stunning design and comfortable interior contribute to a premium experience. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides decent MPG for its class. Its reliability is generally good, and although the initial price is high, it holds its value well, appealing to the practical buyer.

The Bad

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster's weaknesses include a relatively small trunk, limited interior storage space, and a higher price tag compared to some competitors. What Problems Does the 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Have?

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster, being a relatively new model, doesn't have extensive long-term reliability data available yet. However, some concerns and potential issues can be extrapolated from previous 718 models. One potential concern is the oil consumption in the turbocharged flat-4 engines. Some owners of earlier 718 Boxsters reported higher than expected oil consumption, although Porsche has addressed this with updated designs. Premature water pump failure has also been reported in some instances on earlier models.
The flat-4 engine sound is a common complaint, as some find it less appealing than the flat-6. Software glitches in the PCM system and occasional electrical issues have been mentioned by owners of previous model years. Always check for any open recalls with the NHTSA using the VIN. While generally reliable, regular maintenance and adherence to Porsche's service schedule are crucial to mitigating potential problems and ensuring long-term dependability. Carbon buildup on intake valves is something to consider, especially with direct injection engines over time.

How long will the 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster last?

With diligent maintenance, the 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster can provide well over 150,000 miles or 10+ years of service. Porsches are generally well-engineered for longevity. However, proper maintenance is key. Issues such as oil consumption (particularly in earlier models), potential water pump failures, and carbon buildup in direct injection engines can affect long-term durability if not addressed proactively. Regular oil changes, adhering to recommended service intervals, and addressing any warning signs promptly will significantly extend the lifespan of the vehicle. The convertible top mechanism should also be maintained to prevent wear and tear.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster features the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, including a touchscreen display, navigation (optional), Apple CarPlay compatibility, and Bluetooth connectivity. Standard driver-assistance features include a rearview camera and parking sensors. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The base audio system can be upgraded to a Bose or Burmester system for enhanced sound quality.
Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. While official crash-test ratings from NHTSA or IIHS might not be available specifically for the 2023 model, previous 718 Boxster models have generally performed well in safety tests. The optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) enhances handling and stability. The Sport Chrono Package adds performance-oriented features, including launch control and a Sport Plus driving mode. The infotainment system is generally user-friendly, but some may find it less intuitive than systems offered by some competitors. Overall, the 718 Boxster offers a good balance of technology and safety features, with plenty of opportunities for customization.

2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster had a starting MSRP of around $68,000, with higher trims like the GTS 4.0 exceeding $90,000 and easily surpassing $100,000 with options. As of late 2024, used 2023 Boxsters are holding their value relatively well. Expect to find base models in excellent condition for around $60,000 to $70,000. Lower mileage and desirable options packages (like Sport Chrono or premium audio) command higher prices. The 718 Boxster's strong brand reputation, limited production numbers, and desirability as a sports car contribute to its relatively slow depreciation rate. Convertibles generally depreciate slightly faster.

2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster is not an economical car to own. Insurance costs are higher than average due to its sports car classification and repair costs. Fuel consumption is moderate but requires premium gasoline. Maintenance, including oil changes and other services, can be expensive at Porsche dealerships. Repairs, when needed, are also costly due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs should be factored in, as even minor issues can lead to substantial bills. Budget accordingly for higher insurance and maintenance compared to mainstream vehicles.

2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster competes with roadsters like the BMW Z4, Audi TT Roadster, and Jaguar F-TYPE Convertible. The Boxster excels in handling and mid-engine balance, offering a more engaging driving experience than the Z4 or TT. The F-TYPE offers more powerful engine options and a distinctive exhaust note but lacks the Boxster's precision. The Z4 prioritizes comfort and technology, while the TT offers a more affordable entry point. In terms of reliability, the Boxster is generally comparable to its rivals, though the F-TYPE has a somewhat less stellar reputation. The Boxster's price is higher than the Z4 and TT but lower than some F-TYPE configurations. Alternatives depend on priorities. For raw power and sound, the F-TYPE is appealing. For a balance of comfort and performance at a lower price, the Z4 is a strong contender. The Audi TT offers similar open-top thrills at a more accessible price point, but ultimately, the Boxster’s mid-engine layout and Porsche pedigree make it a unique and compelling choice for driving enthusiasts. A used Corvette C8 is also a worthy contender offering supercar performance for the same price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster is ideal for driving enthusiasts who prioritize handling, a connected driving experience, and open-top thrills. It's worth buying for those who appreciate Porsche's engineering and are willing to pay a premium for it. Whether to buy new or used depends on budget and preferences. A used 2023 model offers a good value proposition, potentially saving money on depreciation. The Boxster S or GTS 4.0 trims are recommended for those seeking more power. Avoid the base engine if you prioritize performance. Ensure a thorough inspection and maintenance history check before purchasing used.

There is no substitute

The GTS 4.0 is what a modern sports car should be a combination of the old and the new and it’s like two cars in one with the droptop !! Three petals driven from the rear the way God intended it.

The best of Porsche

My 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is an amazing automobile. It represents the pinnacle of engineering in razor sharp handling, acceleration, and braking. Fit and finish are impeccable, and comfort in the cockpit will not disappoint. My particular car has a butter smooth, 6 speed manual; best I've ever owned. I will say that if you have problems getting in and out of an automobile, this model might present a problem for you; it sits pretty low. Price may be considered a little steep (my ride had a base price of 92k), but all things considered, I believe it is worth it and that the car, if properly maintained, will hold most of it's value as time goes on. As far as reliability is concerned, I cannot attest as the car only has approx. 3,500 miles logged. I gave it a 5 star on the rating of reliability because this review would not complete if I left it blan.
