Rating: 4.45

The 2021 Jeep Compass, a compact SUV, offers Jeep's signature styling and off-road capability in a smaller package. Part of the second generation introduced in 2017, the 2021 model comes in trims like Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Pricing ranges from approximately $24,000 to $32,000. Its blend of Jeep's rugged image and everyday practicality, plus available 4x4 systems, contributes to its popularity.
The Good

The 2021 Jeep Compass boasts a stylish design appealing to those seeking a visually attractive SUV. Its available 4x4 systems offer off-road capability, satisfying the adventurous spirit. Practically, it provides a comfortable ride and adequate cargo space, making it suitable for daily commutes and family trips. Its value proposition lies in its competitive pricing within the compact SUV segment.

The Bad

The 2021 Jeep Compass's weaknesses include its somewhat underpowered engine, resulting in sluggish acceleration. The nine-speed automatic transmission can sometimes feel hesitant. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and overall reliability. Also, fuel economy is not class-leading. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2021 Jeep Compass Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2021 Jeep Compass often involve the transmission, particularly the nine-speed automatic, with complaints of harsh shifting or hesitation. Some owners have also noted issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, including glitches, freezing, and slow response times. Reports of electrical problems, such as issues with the battery or sensors, are also common.

Recalls for the 2021 model have addressed concerns like potential engine stalling due to fuel delivery issues and malfunctioning rearview cameras.

Long-term reliability is a concern, with reports suggesting that the Compass may require more frequent maintenance and repairs compared to some competitors. Owners should pay close attention to fluid leaks, transmission performance, and any unusual noises. Checking for any outstanding recalls or technical service bulletins (TSBs) is highly recommended before purchasing a used 2021 Compass. Previous model years of the Compass also experienced similar transmission and electrical issues, which continue to be a concern for the 2021 model.

How long will the 2021 Jeep Compass last?

With regular maintenance, a 2021 Jeep Compass can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. However, proper maintenance is key to achieving this. Common weaknesses that can affect long-term durability include the transmission, which can develop issues with shifting over time, and the electrical system. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters. Addressing these potential issues promptly through preventative maintenance can extend the vehicle's lifespan.

This is the first brand new vehicle I have had in awhile. The safety features are really great. Blind spot warning, applied cruise control, back up camera, lane correction and on and on. I feel very safe in this vehicle. Also enjoying the keyless ignition and door lock/unlock.

2021 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Jeep Compass ranged from around $24,000 for the base Sport trim to over $32,000 for the top-tier Trailhawk or Limited trims. Current used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $26,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Compass experiences moderate depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include trim level (Trailhawk models tend to hold their value better), condition, mileage, and the presence of optional features, especially advanced safety technologies.

2021 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Jeep Compass falls in the middle range for ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically moderate. Fuel economy is average for its class. Maintenance can be somewhat higher due to potential reliability issues, especially with the transmission. Repairs can also be relatively expensive. Overall, the Compass is not the most economical vehicle to own, but it's not the costliest either. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Compass competes in the crowded compact SUV segment against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester. In terms of performance, the Compass lags behind the CR-V and CX-5, which offer more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, it holds its own, especially with its available Uconnect system. However, reliability is a weak point compared to the CR-V, RAV4, and Forester. Price-wise, the Compass is generally competitive.

Alternatives like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 offer superior reliability and fuel efficiency. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Subaru Forester boasts standard all-wheel drive and excellent safety features.

If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices. For a more sporty driving experience, consider the CX-5. If off-road capability isn't a must-have, these alternatives present compelling advantages. The Kia Sportage is also worth consideration for its value and warranty.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Compass is ideal for buyers who value Jeep's styling and available off-road capability in a compact SUV. It's worth considering if you prioritize looks and the option for 4x4 over outright performance and reliability. Purchasing a used Compass can be a good value if you find one with low mileage and a clean maintenance record. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for those seeking genuine off-road capability. However, be aware of potential reliability issues and factor in the cost of potential repairs. Thorough inspection and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic are highly advised.

Very DISAPPOINTED on August 28, 2024

Look I been waiting a year for my radio to be fixed.

Look I been waiting a year for my radio to be fixed. Then it's my auxiliary battery dead 500. Do not buy this Jeep Compass. I have a 2021 less than 25000 miles. We need to start a class action lawsuit against Dodge/Chrysler and Jeep for sending these cars out knowing they come from the factory flawed. We spend a lot of money and time on these cars. Time to fight back.

Just bought the 21 Jeep Compass 4wd edition.

Just bought the 21 Jeep Compass 4wd edition. My insurance company gave me 1 day to find a car after they totaled out mine, because I was hit by an illegal who ran a red light. He had a license that said not for ID purposes, along with no insurance. But he was out making deliveries. So far I like the 22 compass but I find the steering is a little lose and with it like that if feels like your going to tip it at certain speeds. But after 2 weeks so far so good we will see after a few months,

Don't Do It on December 1, 2022

Awful Car, HORRENDOUS gas mileage

This car is the worst on gas. It has absolutely horrendous gas mileage. My husband has a 2021 Tacoma that LOVES gas and it drinks less gas than this car. It's sound system is terrible as well. It sounds very tinny and cheap. It's not very intuitive either. Every single time I get in this car I have to manually reconnect my phone. Parts of it just feel, for lack of, of a better word, cheap. I got this car as a rental while my actual car was in the shop getting repaired and it's safe to say I would NEVER purchase this car and I'm truly shocked that other people do. I'm simply appalled at just how much gas this stupid car uses. It's awful. My 2015 Hyundai mini suv is more technologically sensitive and advanced than this thing and burns WAY less gas, and that's saying something. Skip this car. If you're thinking of buying it, don't. Jeep should be embarrassed by this thing.

My 2021 Compass, bad investment

D Cockrell, I don't recommend to buy this compass. Poor electrical, radio, climate control. Jeep is doing nothing about the problem. Lawyer is needed now.

Good looking but quality of the parts terrible

I bought on December 2020 my 2021 Jeep Compass Altitude. First 2 months were amazing but after that problems are started. Firstly my radio is malfunction and I have been waiting replacement for 3 months. Radio has been replaced but next day again it wasn't working at all. Customer service is disaster, they never helped me at all. When I bought my car I didn't only get brand new car also I got a lots of headache.
