The 2012 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV, part of the first generation launched in 2007. Key trims included the base Compass, Latitude, and Limited. New for 2012 was a revised interior and suspension. It was available in front-wheel and four-wheel drive. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $19,000 to $25,000. It appealed to buyers seeking Jeep styling and capabilities in a smaller, more fuel-efficient package than larger SUVs.
The Good

Fuel efficiency is decent for its class, appealing to practical buyers. Emotionally, it delivers the Jeep brand's adventurous spirit in a compact form, suitable for urban and light off-road use.

The Bad

The 2012 Jeep Compass has known weaknesses, including its engine performance, which some find underpowered. Reliability can be a concern, with reports of transmission and electrical issues. What Problems Does the 2012 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2012 Jeep Compass has several frequently reported problems, impacting its long-term reliability. Transmission issues, particularly with the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), are a common complaint, with some owners reporting slipping or failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the alternator and starter, are also noted. Some owners have reported excessive oil consumption.
Recalls for the 2012 Compass have included issues related to the powertrain control module, which could cause stalling. Other recalls have addressed potential problems with airbags and brake systems.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around premature wear of brake components, suspension issues, and the aforementioned transmission problems. Engine issues, while less common than transmission problems, can also appear over time. Before purchasing a used 2012 Compass, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is recommended to assess the condition of these critical components.

How long will the 2012 Jeep Compass last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Jeep Compass can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity is heavily influenced by maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and timely repairs are crucial. The CVT transmission is a known weak point and may require replacement during the vehicle's lifespan. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winters. Consistent care can mitigate these issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan, but neglecting maintenance will likely result in reduced durability.

This Jeep was nice enough but was not what I was looking for in a new purchase I could only compare it to one other Jeep I owned and even though it was nice enough I felt it did not compare I could see it working well for other families and people just was not to my liking.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Jeep Compass offers basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a six-speaker system and optional navigation.
Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard cruise control and available features like remote keyless entry.
Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features included side-curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary. It received mixed ratings, with some areas of concern, particularly in side-impact tests. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also showed mixed results. Potential buyers should research specific crash test results for the 2012 model year. The tech features are dated by today's standards. Overall, the 2012 Jeep Compass offers basic safety and entertainment for its segment and era.

2012 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Jeep Compass had a starting MSRP of around $19,000 to $25,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Compass has experienced significant depreciation due to reliability concerns and newer models offering more features. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, mileage, condition of the transmission, and presence of optional features like four-wheel drive. Models with a clean title and documented maintenance records command higher prices.

2012 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Jeep Compass has moderate insurance costs. Fuel economy is average for its class. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential transmission and electrical issues. Long-term ownership costs are likely to be less economical compared to more reliable competitors. Potential buyers should factor in the possibility of significant repairs when considering the overall cost of ownership.

2012 Jeep Compass Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Jeep Compass is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Jeep Compass competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Compass lags behind rivals, particularly in acceleration and handling. Feature-wise, it offers fewer advanced tech and safety features compared to competitors. Reliability is a significant weakness compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which are known for their dependability. Price-wise, the Compass is often more affordable than these rivals, especially on the used market.
Alternatives to the 2012 Jeep Compass that offer better reliability and overall performance include the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. If budget is a primary concern, a used Subaru Forester might also be a suitable alternative, offering better off-road capability than some other options in the class. For buyers prioritizing reliability and features, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices, despite the higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Jeep Compass is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking Jeep styling in a compact SUV. However, it's worth buying only under specific conditions. A used 2012 Compass should be thoroughly inspected by a mechanic before purchase, focusing on the transmission and electrical systems. The Latitude trim may offer a better balance of features. Given its reliability concerns, it's not generally recommended unless the price is significantly lower than more reliable alternatives. Buyers should be prepared for potential repairs and prioritize a well-maintained vehicle with a documented service history.

Could do alot worse.

Bought this vehicle last year with 125,000 miles on it. Got off to a rough start. Brakes, muffler, and under carriage needed replacement. Jeep paid for the undercarriage replacement. Since then it has settled down and been reliable. I feel that many of its issues have to do with the salt and other chemicals that are found on the WI roads. Not really the cars fault. One heads up: when you nail the throttle, it's really loud.

Jeeps classy auto

The compass is not like the wrangler, it's a little slower pick-up but it's great for us seniors or a family car runs great for me. With our messed up roads. The driving experience is great. If you want it to run well, keep up the maintenance. I'm 67 years old and I'm happy.

Rusted crossmembers - subframe

I bought a used jeep compass from a dealership that did not disclose it had rusted cross members. Jeep covered the cross members. They did not cover any of the other parts. Here I am with a jeep I had for literally 2 weeks shelling out almost $1000 in parts because of jeeps design of the vehicle and they will not help cover the cost.

Excellent AWD small SUV

I've had VW Jetta TDI, 5 Subarus, and a Jeep Liberty TDI. Due to no longer needing the towing capacity of the diesel we traded in for the 2012 compass and never looked back. Cute little SUV, have had many questions about it as it is attractive. MPG is 21 - 29. Needs minimum maintenance, as it is a "world vehicle" [can be serviced anywhere without special tools, parts or knowledge.]-- basic and simple, uses ordinary spark plugs, oil etc. However in spite of manual advice, CVT fluid must be changed every 35 to 40K miles to ensure longevity. Adequate engine performance, very quiet except for sound of ram air intake system. Able to tow 2000

Perfect small SUV for all around use

Handles great, good height for snow and rough going, actually one of the better mpg this niche and year; learning curve for the cvt but now I love it; hard surfaces inside make for easy cleaning from dogs, mud, hauling, etc. An underestimated workhorse in all conditions!

My 2012 Jeep Compass

So I've had this Jeep Compass since July 2015 and I have many complaints on it but it's an alright car. I brought it with 42,000 miles on it and for the first few years I had no problems but after 75,000 miles it went downhill. There are pros but also many cons that need to be said Pros - it's some how a chick magnet (I don't see it but always get compliments from girls) -Great first car for teen/first driver -easy to drive -Firm steering wheel/handles well -awesome speakers/sound system/tailgate speaker - Can handle great in snow -good for local driving - good truck space and storage - has a 2 prong outlet Cons -Eh gas mileage -xxxxty transmission- if driving in the heat for over an hour the transmission will overheat and the car will go into limp mode, disabling the car to go past 40MPH, the worst part is that there is no code for this issue. -if I drive through a puddle and it splashes there is a chance that I will losing power steering, the wheel locks up and it'll make this screeching noise. Also no code for this issue -THIS CAR IS SLOW, 0-60 in like 11.5 seconds - The CVT sucks and doesn't shift great at higher RPMs So I'm my opinion, this is a good car for a younger driver, and if you're going to buy an older edition compass do not get the CVT transmission, get the Automatic Transmission
