The 2015 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that slots into Jeep's lineup between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee. Produced from 2007 onward (with this generation ending in 2017), the Compass offers Jeep's iconic styling at a more accessible price point. Key trims include Sport, Latitude, and Limited. The pricing range for a new 2015 model was approximately $20,000 to $27,000. Its appeal lies in its Jeep heritage and available off-road capability, especially in the 4x4 configurations.
The Good

The 2015 Jeep Compass offers Jeep's rugged styling and available 4x4 capability, appealing to the adventurous spirit. Practically, it provides a relatively affordable entry point into the Jeep brand. While not a performance leader, the Compass provides adequate transportation and some models offer improved fuel economy. The higher trims offer enhanced comfort features.

The Bad

The 2015 Jeep Compass is known for its somewhat underwhelming engine performance, particularly with the base engine. Reliability can be a concern, with reports of transmission issues and electrical problems. The interior materials are often criticized for feeling cheap. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2015 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2015 Jeep Compass has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. One common issue is with the transmission, particularly the automatic transmission, with reports of rough shifting, slipping, and even failure. Electrical problems are also frequently cited, including issues with the infotainment system, sensors, and wiring. Some owners have reported engine issues, such as excessive oil consumption.
Recalls for the 2015 Compass have included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leaks. It is vital to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to determine if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to these potential issues. Routine maintenance is crucial, but even with diligent care, some of these problems may still arise. Potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and factor them into their decision-making process, potentially seeking a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to assess the vehicle's overall condition.

How long will the 2015 Jeep Compass last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Jeep Compass can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Average yearly mileage is around 12,000-15,000 miles. However, long-term durability can be a concern due to the previously mentioned transmission and electrical issues. The interior plastics can also degrade over time, and suspension components may require replacement. Consistent oil changes, timely transmission fluid services, and addressing any warning signs promptly are essential for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Jeep Compass offers a basic set of built-in tech and entertainment features. The standard audio system includes a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims may include a touchscreen infotainment system with available navigation. Driver-assistance features are limited, with standard features like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. Optional features may include a rearview camera.
Safety features include standard front airbags, side curtain airbags, and traction control. The NHTSA gave the 2015 Jeep Compass an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary depending on the specific test, with some tests showing marginal or acceptable performance. Overall, the tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. More advanced driver-assistance systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available on this model year. The available rearview camera helps when parking or reversing, but its resolution may be limited compared to modern systems. The higher trims offer a slightly better audio experience, but overall, the tech is dated.

2015 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Jeep Compass ranged from around $20,000 to $27,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $14,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Compass has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more advanced competitors. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has 4x4 capability. Models with lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices.

2015 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2015 Jeep Compass are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the potential for transmission and electrical issues. Long-term ownership costs can be unpredictable, potentially making it less economical compared to more reliable alternatives. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

How Does the 2015 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Jeep Compass competes with other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester. In terms of performance, the Compass generally lags behind these rivals, offering less powerful engine options and a less refined driving experience. The CR-V, RAV4, and CX-5 offer better fuel economy and more engaging handling. Feature-wise, the Compass is often considered to be behind the curve, lacking the advanced safety and tech features found in its competitors.
Reliability is a significant concern for the Compass, with the CR-V, RAV4, and Forester consistently ranking higher in reliability surveys. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more sporty driving experience and a more upscale interior. While the Compass may be more affordable than some of these rivals on the used market, the potential for higher repair costs can offset the initial savings. Better alternatives include the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5, all of which offer superior reliability, performance, and features. The Subaru Forester provides similar off-road capability with better overall reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Jeep Compass is best suited for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize Jeep styling and available 4x4 capability over outright performance and reliability. It may be worth buying used if the price is significantly lower than comparable vehicles and a thorough pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues. Opting for the 2.4L engine and a well-maintained example is recommended. However, potential buyers should be aware of the Compass's known weaknesses and be prepared for potential repairs. For those seeking a more reliable and feature-rich compact SUV, alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 are better choices.

This is my first SUV. I like that it's not really huge but big enough for what I need. I also really enjoy the comfortable seating.

Great Daily Driver

This car is great for somebody looking for a daily commuter, but is also looking to benefit from a little extra storage room. It is the economy option if you are looking for a jeep. It has a little extra ground clearance and a wheel base that will allow you to get out of town on a weekend camping or fishing trip, but your greater benefit is in the economy. It been a reliable option for me for the past 5 years.

My favorite vehicle so far!

It's comfortable, has nice computer features with a back up camera. Only thing I didn't like was small drink holders but that's easy to fix with a car accessory. Love it!

Budget price with premium features.

A lot of room for a compact vehicle. Enough power for everyday driving. I have High Altitude Edition FWD 4 door with a CVT trans.

Never had a transmission go out at 50,000 miles

This is my first Jeep and with transmission going out with less than 50 thousand miles it will be my last.Do yourself a favor and buy anything other than a jeep compass.

Keep Compas

We went to purchase a small economical car for our daughter who was getting her first car. She test drove the Jeep after insisting on not wanting an SUV and she fell in love with it. After test driving other cars she liked the way the Jeep drove.
