The 2007 Jeep Compass marked Jeep's entry into the compact crossover SUV market. It features a four-door wagon body style and was produced from 2007. Key trims include the base model and the Limited. New, its pricing ranged approximately from $16,000 to $20,000. The Compass aimed to offer Jeep styling and some off-road capability in a more fuel-efficient and affordable package, appealing to a wider audience than traditional Jeep models.
The Good

The 2007 Jeep Compass offered Jeep's iconic styling at an affordable price, appealing to budget-conscious buyers. Its compact size made it easy to maneuver in urban environments. While not a rock crawler, it provided some all-weather capability thanks to available four-wheel drive. Its fuel efficiency was also considered a plus compared to larger SUVs.

The Bad

The 2007 Jeep Compass suffered from several weaknesses. Its engine was often criticized for being underpowered, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) could be problematic. Interior materials felt cheap, and the overall build quality was questionable. Potential buyers should carefully inspect for transmission issues, rust, and electrical problems.

What Problems Does the 2007 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2007 Jeep Compass has garnered a reputation for less-than-stellar reliability. Frequently reported problems include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), leading to slipping, hesitation, and eventual failure. Engine problems, such as excessive oil consumption and premature wear, have also been reported. The suspension components, particularly the front struts and ball joints, are prone to wear and tear, requiring frequent replacements.
Interior build quality is another area of concern, with reports of cheap materials, rattling, and premature wear of upholstery and trim. Electrical issues, including problems with the power windows, door locks, and instrument cluster, are also common.
Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any recalls specific to the VIN. While not necessarily model-year specific, issues related to airbags and electronic stability control systems have appeared for similar vehicles in this era of Chrysler/Jeep production. Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the CVT transmission and the overall durability of the engine. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and carefully inspect any used 2007 Jeep Compass before purchase.

How long will the 2007 Jeep Compass last?

A 2007 Jeep Compass, with proper maintenance, could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, this is heavily dependent on consistent maintenance and driving habits. Given the known issues with the CVT transmission, its longevity is a primary concern. Regular fluid changes and gentle driving can extend its lifespan, but failure is still a significant risk. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and excessive oil consumption, may also appear as the vehicle ages. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. Therefore, a pre-purchase inspection is crucial.

This is an awesome car. Good in snow. Will hydroplane on rain on occassion. And dies when fill up with gas. Does this a few times then ok. Dealer cant find reason. But other than this 1 flat tire and perfect for 11 yrs!

This was my first new vehicle. I won't call it a car, because my Jeep Liberty is by no means a car. I wouldn't call my Jeep Liberty a truck, either, because it's not that big and bulky. But my Jeep Liberty is every bit a sports utility vehicle! All the comforts of a luxury vehicle - power everything, heated front seats as well as mirrors, and a sound system comparable to many high-end modes of transport. I like my Jeep Liberty so much, I bought a used one for the family.

Got a 2007 Jeep compass. Loved it the first couple of years. Then the dash lights came on, and off and on again and again. Never found out what the real problem was. They are off now. Brakes, tierod, bearings you name it. Well now with all that noise underneath I find out the two cradles are totally rusted. Oh yes they will pay for the cradles and 6 hours labour, if I get a list of work done in advance to the tune of 4200.00 To get an outside garage to do the work they will all tell you it could be a 10 hr. job or more, They won't pay the extra hours to do the work. I have to get the cradles done and then I will not be buying a dodge ever again, especially a Jeep. All I've been hearing from everone I ask is they are a very poorly made rig.

My 2007 Jeep compass seem like a good are when I bought it. Here's the thing, in the last 6 years that I had it there was a recall on the brakes. Witch were fixed but lately seems there maybe a problem, the dealer says there fine. Tie rod problems, Acceleration problems and now for the 3rd time problems with the power steering. Hmm not liking this Jeep right now. Costing me an arm and a leg and the problems happen again. Good gas mileage but now it isn't reliable for long trips. for the price I paid I expect more. This was the first new car I ever bought. I am very disappointed.
Caution
I originally liked the style of the car. I have been a Jeep owner for over 20 years. I liked what I saw in the Compass, however after 5 years of costly repairs I am ready to move. The struts went at a cost of $750, ball joints a couple of times, then the electrical system began to malfunction. A head light went out and I was told by three different repair shops that it was not the headlight, but the computer that regulates the electrical system. The cost of the latter was just under $1000. Then the catalytic converter, had that replaced at a cost of $1000, and the engine light keeps coming on. I have previously owned Jeep Wranglers and I would go back to them in a heart beat, but never a Jeep Compass again.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Jeep Compass offered fairly basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with satellite radio. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.
Standard safety features included front airbags, side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC). Optional features included fog lamps.
Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be consulted for specific scores, but generally, the Compass received mixed ratings. It's worth noting that safety standards have significantly improved since 2007, so compared to modern vehicles, the Compass may offer less crash protection. Optional features such as remote start, and a sunroof, were available on higher trims. The technology and safety features were adequate for its time, but fall short compared to newer vehicles.

2007 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Jeep Compass had a starting MSRP in the range of $16,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, its current market price is significantly lower, typically ranging from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Compass has depreciated considerably due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more desirable models. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive. Vehicles with documented maintenance records and in good condition command higher prices.

2007 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Jeep Compass generally has average insurance costs for its class. Fuel economy is decent, but not exceptional. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the known reliability issues, particularly with the CVT transmission. Long-term ownership can be costly if major repairs are needed. While the initial purchase price is low, potential buyers should factor in the potential for increased maintenance and repair expenses, making it potentially less economical than some competitors.

2007 Jeep Compass Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Jeep Compass is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Jeep Compass competed against vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Compass lags behind most of its rivals, particularly in acceleration and handling. The RAV4 and CR-V offered more powerful and refined engines. Feature-wise, the Compass was generally on par with its competitors in base trims, but lacked some of the advanced features available in higher trims of the RAV4 and CR-V.
Reliability is where the Compass significantly falls short. The RAV4 and CR-V are known for their excellent reliability, while the Compass has a history of transmission and engine problems. In terms of price, the Compass was initially more affordable than some of its competitors, which may have been its main selling point.
Better alternatives would be the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, which offer superior reliability, performance, and overall value. A Ford Escape from the same era might be a similar alternative in terms of price, but it is important to research reliability for the Escape as well before making a decision. Ultimately, while the Compass may be tempting due to its low price, the potential for higher repair costs makes it a less attractive option compared to its more reliable rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Jeep Compass is best suited for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize Jeep styling and some all-weather capability over performance and reliability. It's worth buying *only* if found at a very low price and after a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic. Specifically, scrutinize the CVT transmission for any signs of slippage or hesitation. Avoid models with high mileage or a questionable maintenance history. Newer, more reliable compact SUVs are generally a better investment. If you absolutely need a Jeep and are on a very tight budget, then a 2007 Compass *might* be considered, but with significant reservations and a strong emphasis on pre-purchase inspection.

Jeep Sedan

I bought this suv used thinking it was a Jeep. It's is no more than a car that sits up a little higher. My fault for not doing the resesearch. Interior is cramped with no storage space. Very rough ride. I can't reach the windshield because of the slope & extra huge dash area.

Worst vehicle I've ever purchased

The only good thing about this jeep has been the sound system and how it looks overall. When it comes to performance and reliability, absolutely horrible. I have put almost 8 grand into this vehicle in the last 15 months and now the transmission is going too. I've replaced the brakes and pads, alternator, stabilizer/sway bar, rotors, lateral link, I've fixed suspension, I could go on and on I have a stake of receipts from my mechanic 3 inches tall. Finding out there's a ton of recalls on it now too that make this vehicle VERY UNSAFE. I've been driving and my brakes just decide to stop working or get stuck. Or the accelerator doesn't slow down when I take my foot off the pedal. It down shifts whenever it wants, even when I'm on the highway going 100kms/hour. Heat smells like chemicals, power steering fluid leaks, and it burns oil in days. I just had an oil change and transmission flush and 2 days later it was dry again and now my transmission is falling out of my jeep. What a NIGHTMARE this thing has been. Nothing but a dangerous money pit.

garbage

I am 64 years old and this is by far the worst car I have ever owed. I bought this car new and it has 140000k on it. I pump cash into it endlessly. Ball joints, tyrods, starter, many many relays and switches. 6 brake jobs, headgascet, sensors to name a few off the top of my head. Total crap.
