The 2013 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that offers Jeep styling at a more affordable price point. It's part of the first generation Compass (2007-2017). Key trims include the base Sport, Latitude, and Limited. When new, prices ranged from around $19,000 to $25,000. Its appeal lies in its Jeep heritage, available four-wheel drive, and relatively fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine for its class. It stands out for its off-road capability compared to some other compact crossovers.
The Good

The 2013 Jeep Compass offers a blend of practicality and Jeep's adventurous spirit. Its advantages include available four-wheel drive for off-road capability (emotional appeal), a relatively fuel-efficient engine for its class (practical), and a comfortable ride. It also represents a decent value in the used car market, appealing to budget-conscious buyers.

The Bad

The 2013 Jeep Compass has some known weaknesses. The engine can feel underpowered, especially with the CVT transmission. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the transmission and electrical systems. The interior quality is not as high as some competitors. Watch out for excessive wear and tear or signs of neglect during pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2013 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2013 Jeep Compass, like many vehicles, has faced its share of reported problems and recalls. Frequently reported issues include problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly slipping or failure. This is a common complaint across multiple model years of the first-generation Compass. Engine issues, such as excessive oil consumption and stalling, have also been reported. Electrical problems, ranging from malfunctioning sensors to issues with the infotainment system, also occur. Some owners have reported issues with the suspension and steering components, leading to concerns about handling and safety.

Recalls for the 2013 Compass have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks, which could increase the risk of a fire. Also, airbag system malfunctions have triggered recalls. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the CVT transmission. Many owners report needing replacements well before the typical lifespan of an automatic transmission. Suspension components and the electrical system are also areas of potential long-term maintenance. Before purchasing a used 2013 Compass, thoroughly research its vehicle history report, checking for completed recall repairs and documented maintenance.

How long will the 2013 Jeep Compass last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Jeep Compass can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Years of service heavily depend on driving conditions and maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing (especially for CVT models), and timely repairs are crucial. Long-term durability weaknesses primarily stem from the CVT transmission, which is known to be less reliable than traditional automatic transmissions. Suspension components and electrical issues can also arise with age. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters, so regular washing and rustproofing are advisable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Jeep Compass offered a fairly basic level of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a premium sound system, satellite radio, and available Uconnect infotainment system with a touchscreen display (optional). Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, consisting mainly of standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Safety features included standard front airbags, side curtain airbags, and antilock brakes. Optional features included fog lamps and available all-wheel drive.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. The 2013 Compass received mixed ratings. It earned a "Good" rating in some tests, like the moderate overlap front test, but received lower ratings in others, such as the small overlap front test (introduced later), which highlights a significant safety weakness. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings should also be checked for a comprehensive assessment.

2013 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Jeep Compass ranged from approximately $19,000 for the base Sport trim to around $25,000 for the Limited trim. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Compass has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more desirable compact SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has the desirable four-wheel-drive option. Low mileage and a clean title can help increase resale value.

2013 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Jeep Compass generally has average insurance costs for its class. Fuel costs are moderate, especially with the 2.0L engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential issues with the CVT transmission and other reported problems. Long-term ownership costs can be significant if major repairs are needed. It's not the most economical vehicle to own compared to some of its more reliable competitors.

2013 Jeep Compass Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Jeep Compass is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2013 Jeep Compass competes with other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Compass lags behind many of its rivals, especially in acceleration and handling. The CR-V, RAV4, and CX-5 offer superior driving dynamics. Feature-wise, the Compass offers a reasonable set of standard equipment, but its infotainment system is less advanced than those in newer competitors. Reliability is a significant weakness for the Compass, with the CR-V and RAV4 generally considered much more dependable.

Price-wise, the Compass can be more affordable on the used market, but the lower price reflects its drawbacks. Better alternatives include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their reliability and overall performance. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience. The Subaru Forester provides better standard safety features and standard all-wheel drive. While the Compass might appeal to budget-conscious buyers seeking a Jeep-branded SUV, the alternatives generally offer a better overall ownership experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Jeep Compass a Good Vehicle?

The 2013 Jeep Compass is ideal for buyers on a very tight budget who prioritize Jeep styling and available four-wheel drive over performance and reliability. It can be worth buying used *if* thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic, and if the price reflects its potential issues. A well-maintained Latitude or Limited trim might be preferable for added features. However, buyers should be aware of the potential for higher maintenance costs and consider more reliable alternatives if their budget allows. Weigh the lower purchase price against the risk of future repairs. Proceed with caution and thorough research.

Great Compact SUV 4 X 4

This vehicle has been performing perfectly for the 27 mos. that I have owned it so far. I bought it from a dealer as a Certified Pre-Owned, and am the 2nd owner. I have had zero problems in the 15,000 miles that I have driven it. It also has great traction in 4 Wheel Drive on ice & snow. It handles great & has very good gas mileage. 32 mpg on hgwy & 26 mpg in town. It also has great storage space either w/back seat up or folded down. My first Jeep, and won't be my last!

This car had problems

Low miles looks great...however I?ve been stranded more than once since I purchased it. First the battery now it?s either the radiator or the thermostat. It costs too much 10,000 for me to have to pour money into in the first month of ownership before the first payment! I?m very disappointed.

A Car I Wish I Could Own

It was an amazing vehicle to drive. After driving it for a day, it was real easy to get used to especially for someone that was coming from a smaller car. Driving through the back roads was a peaceful ride with no issues going on from the car.

Most reliable car I?ve ever owed

This car met all of my need. Chairs are very comfortable, accelerating is good enough in SUV group, feeling safe when I drive it, the exterior of the car is unbelieveable. It is Jeep. So, it has to be good. Love it.

Best designed Jeep for the money

This car met all of my needs. Easy to drive, all the interior comforts. Rides better than my previous vehicle, costs less to operate and maintain. Sits higher to see over snowbanks. Narrower turning radius, easily maneuvers in and out of parking spaces. Good gas mileage. Takes regular unleaded. Lower cost to insure or repair. Great car for the Northeast.
