Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Chrysler Sebring was part of the second generation, offered in sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles. Key trims included the base, GTC, and Limited. Originally introduced to replace the Chrysler LeBaron, the Sebring aimed to offer stylish and affordable transportation. The 2004 models had a pricing range typically from around $17,000 to $26,000 when new. Its popularity stemmed from its variety of body styles and relatively lower price point compared to some competitors, especially the convertible.
The Good

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring offered a blend of affordability and style, appealing to budget-conscious buyers. The convertible version provided open-air enjoyment. Comfortable seating made it suitable for daily commutes. While not a performance car, certain engine options provided adequate power. Its strongest suit was its value proposition, offering a decent set of features for the price.

The Bad

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring had known weaknesses including subpar build quality, leading to potential reliability issues. Transmission problems were a common concern. The interior materials felt cheap. Potential buyers should inspect for rust, especially in areas prone to corrosion, and carefully check the transmission for smooth shifting. Electrical issues were also occasionally reported.

What Problems Does the 2004 Chrysler Sebring Have?

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring, like many of its generation, faced several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, were common, ranging from rough shifting to complete failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system, also surfaced frequently.

Engine problems, such as oil leaks and overheating, were reported as well, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. The 2.7L V6 engine was particularly prone to sludge buildup if not properly maintained, leading to potential engine failure.

Rust was another concern, especially in areas with harsh winters where salt is used on the roads. The undercarriage and body panels were susceptible to corrosion. Interior quality was also a point of criticism, with cheap plastics and materials that tended to wear quickly.

Recalls for the 2004 Chrysler Sebring were issued for various safety-related concerns, including issues with the airbag system and potential fuel leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability was generally below average compared to its Japanese competitors.

How long will the 2004 Chrysler Sebring last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Chrysler Sebring could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or last 15-20 years. However, many haven't reached that mark due to the aforementioned reliability issues. Consistent oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for longevity. The 2.7L V6 engine's tendency for sludge buildup remains a long-term durability concern if not meticulously maintained. Rust also becomes a more significant issue over time, especially in northern climates. Vehicles with documented service records are more likely to have fared better over the years.

we bought our chrysler seabring convertible at action auto sales and we would recommend them to friends nice people and were very happy with the deal we made
unhappy sebring owner
I will never buy a Chrysler again. i have owned this car for 6 years. In those 6 years i have replaced pretty much everything on the car. all the ball joints, the transmission and oil pans. both bumpers(because they where so low they got messed up on the simplest of bumps), battery, alternator, and starter. Everything on this car is in the most inconvenient places. The wheels have given me nothing but grief. I hate this car. and will never in my life buy another Chrysler and will tell everyone i know to never buy one. unless they want to take their front wheel off and paneling just to replace something as simple as a battery. This car is not reliable and has left me stranded more times then i can count.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring offered basic technology for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have included an upgraded sound system with cassette player. Navigation was not a factory option. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) being a notable safety feature. Cruise control was available on some trims.

Safety features included front airbags and side airbags were optional on some models. It lacked advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied depending on the body style. Generally, the Sebring received moderate safety ratings. Specifically, NHTSA ratings for frontal and side impacts ranged from three to five stars, while the IIHS ratings were generally "Marginal" or "Acceptable".

Optional features included a power sunroof, leather upholstery, and premium sound systems. The convertible featured a power-operated top. Overall, the Sebring's tech and safety features were basic for its era, lacking many of the advancements found in more modern vehicles.

2004 Chrysler Sebring Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Chrysler Sebring ranged from approximately $17,000 to $26,000, depending on the trim level and body style. Today, used market prices typically range from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Sebring experienced significant depreciation due to reliability concerns and build quality issues. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the specific trim level. Convertibles tend to hold slightly more value than sedans or coupes, but overall, resale value is low.

2004 Chrysler Sebring Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Chrysler Sebring are relatively low due to its age and value. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on the engine choice and driving habits. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the car's known reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good, but frequent repairs can accumulate. Long-term ownership costs can be unpredictable, making it potentially more costly than some more reliable alternatives. It's not the most economical choice in terms of long-term ownership.

2004 Chrysler Sebring Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Chrysler Sebring is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Chrysler Sebring Compare to Other Sedan?

Compared to rivals like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Mazda 6, the 2004 Chrysler Sebring generally falls short in terms of reliability and overall build quality. While the Sebring might have been initially more affordable, its higher maintenance costs and potential for repairs make it less economical in the long run. The Accord and Camry offered superior reliability, better resale value, and a more refined driving experience.

In terms of features, the Sebring offered comparable options for its time, but the execution and quality of materials weren't as good as its Japanese competitors. The Mazda 6 offered a sportier driving experience, while the Camry and Accord provided a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Alternatives to the 2004 Chrysler Sebring include the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, and Nissan Altima. These alternatives offer better reliability, higher resale value, and a generally more satisfying ownership experience. If budget is a primary concern, a well-maintained older model of one of these alternatives would likely be a better choice than a Sebring of the same year.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Chrysler Sebring a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring is ideally suited for someone on a very tight budget seeking basic transportation and who is willing to accept potential reliability issues. It might be worth considering if found in exceptionally good condition with a well-documented maintenance history and at a very low price point. The convertible version could appeal to those wanting an inexpensive open-top experience. However, given the Sebring's age and history, it's crucial to have it thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchasing. Generally, opting for a more reliable alternative like a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, even if it's an older model, would be a wiser long-term investment. Avoid models with the 2.7L V6 unless there's solid proof of diligent maintenance to mitigate potential engine sludge issues.

Run away from this car

Not worth the money, used or new. Had many machinical issues with this model. From power starring, to rims on tires, this model repairs orders under warranty were unbelievable. Luckily I purchased an extended warranty because I used it for the replacement of the complete steering unity. The transmission, door handles, left front wheel unit, and the list continue. This is a lemon deal if ever there was one, bought it new in 2004 and today it has 75,000 miles. Don't trust this model at all I would trade it Right now, if someone made me an offer.

Most reliable car I've owned.

In 10 yrs. I've replaced 2 altenators and a camshaft sensor. I also changed the oil every 3-4 thousand miles and thats the key with these cars. Everyone rips on the 2.7 ltr. but mine has 209k miles and still goin strong. I purchased it used and would recommend it. This survey wont let me answer the 2 questions below so I'll do it here.
