Jovan | March 31, 2025
The Honda HR-V, introduced to the US market in 2016, is a subcompact crossover SUV known for its versatility and fuel efficiency. The 2021 HR-V is part of the first generation. Key trims include LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L. Its popularity stems from its "Magic Seat" system, offering flexible cargo configurations, and its Honda reliability. The 2021 HR-V's pricing ranged approximately from $21,000 to $27,000 when new.
The Good

The 2021 Honda HR-V offers excellent reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its clever "Magic Seat" configuration provides unmatched cargo versatility. Comfortable for city driving and boasting Honda's reputation for quality, it also offers a stylish design that attracts those seeking a practical yet aesthetically pleasing subcompact SUV.

The Bad

The 2021 Honda HR-V's main weaknesses include its underpowered engine, which can feel sluggish, especially when fully loaded or driving uphill. The infotainment system is also somewhat dated and lacks some modern features. Road noise can be noticeable at highway speeds. Buyers should test drive to assess engine performance.

What Problems Does the 2021 Honda HR-V Have?

The 2021 Honda HR-V generally enjoys good reliability, but some frequently reported problems include issues related to the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly with shuddering or hesitation during acceleration. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, such as weak cooling performance. There have been some complaints regarding the infotainment system's responsiveness and glitchiness.

Recalls for the 2021 model year have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any updates. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the CVT's longevity and potential for costly repairs. While the engine itself is generally reliable, the CVT requires regular maintenance, including fluid changes, to prevent issues. Some owners have experienced premature wear of brake components. Overall, the 2021 HR-V holds up well, but potential buyers should be aware of these potential issues and ensure proper maintenance is performed.

How long will the 2021 Honda HR-V last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Honda HR-V can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report well over 10 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, especially CVT fluid changes. Long-term durability largely depends on how well the CVT is maintained and the severity of driving conditions. The engine itself is generally robust. Weaknesses over time might include suspension components wearing out, potential for rust in colder climates, and degradation of interior materials.

This is a perfect car for me (80 yrs old, 5'1”) it is easy to get in and out, and I sit far enough from the steering wheel so I can drive with my arms in a much more comfortable position than in my 2009 Honda Civic I had before

I have had my 2021 HR-V for a little over two years and not had one problem until recently. I was driving and had a SRS warning light come on. Found out it is in the passenger side frame. I purchased an extended warranty so I'm hoping that it is covered.I'm just wondering if this is a problem with other HR-Vs. Could you please check. Thanks

I absolutely love driving my car. It is such a smooth ride and the sound system isn't bad either. I always have a nice drive while in it and it is very reliable when i need to step on the gas or need to brake.

Problems with differential had to be addressed 7,000 in repairs now presently parking brake emission light is on continuously . What next? Need a recall on parking brake sensor system. I'm still under warranty

All my life I never owned a new car until 2021 when I finally got to purchase one I got the 2021 Honda HRV right off the showroom floor. 3 months later it was in the shop for 3 days because it would not start. I got it back and It was never the same sense. I called the dealership many times and they tell me that they fix the problem but they didn't because I can't even charge my phone in the car. I never thought I would be so disgusted by owning a new car.

The car does not move! I went from a civic to a HRV and it was the worst mistake. It is boring outside and inside and have I mentioned the car does not move?

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Honda HR-V includes a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The base LX trim offers a 5-inch display screen and Bluetooth connectivity. The Sport trim upgrades to a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims like EX and EX-L add Honda Sensing, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS).

Safety features include a multi-angle rearview camera on all trims. Optional features (depending on the trim) include a sunroof, heated front seats, and leather upholstery. The HR-V generally receives good crash-test ratings. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2021 HR-V a "Good" rating in several crash tests. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) provides overall safety ratings and specific scores for frontal, side, and rollover crash tests.

The infotainment system, while functional, is not the most modern or feature-rich compared to rivals. The lack of a digital instrument cluster is also noticeable. However, the inclusion of Honda Sensing on higher trims significantly enhances safety.

2021 Honda HR-V Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Honda HR-V is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Honda HR-V Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Honda HR-V competes with the Mazda CX-3, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Kicks, and Hyundai Kona. In terms of performance, the HR-V lags behind the Mazda CX-3 and Hyundai Kona, which offer more powerful engine options. The Nissan Kicks is similarly underpowered. Feature-wise, the HR-V's infotainment system is less modern than those found in the Kona and some other competitors. However, the HR-V excels in reliability, often outperforming the Nissan Kicks. Pricing is competitive within the segment.

The Toyota C-HR stands out with its distinctive styling, but its lack of available AWD is a disadvantage compared to the HR-V. If performance is a priority, the Mazda CX-3 or Hyundai Kona are better alternatives. If reliability and cargo space are paramount, the HR-V remains a strong contender. The Kia Seltos offers more space and features for a similar price, making it worth considering. Overall, the HR-V provides a well-rounded package, but understanding individual priorities is crucial for making the right choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Honda HR-V a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Honda HR-V is ideal for city dwellers and first-time car buyers seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient, and versatile subcompact SUV. It's especially appealing to those prioritizing cargo space and Honda's reputation for dependability. It's worth buying, particularly as a used vehicle, given its strong resale value and proven reliability. Opting for the EX or EX-L trim provides the added safety of Honda Sensing and more desirable features. However, if performance is a key concern, exploring alternatives like the Mazda CX-3 or Hyundai Kona is recommended. Thorough inspection of CVT maintenance history is crucial before purchasing a used model.

Nice car for the money

I chose the HR-V because it was small enough to fit down my driveway but was still an suv. The car is great but it doesn't have the features of my RAV-4. However, the new car, in the Sport model, has the updated features I wanted including navigation/Apple Car Play/Android Auto. The add ons by the dealer were not worth it and were ridiculously expensive.

My Review about the 2021 Honda H-RV

We had Bought our 2021 Honda H-RV brand new and it has been a Great Vehicle over all, There are a couple few things that I would of liked a little differently, like for instance the power windows it has "auto" for the drivers side only, I personally would of liked it on both drivers and passangers side (But definitely not a big deal) and the compartment space's there Isn't Any other than the small glove box and a small one between the driver and passanger seat's" I personally like extra compartments " (but again not a big deal) And as far as anything that I would say that I do not like as for the car it's self is that when I roll down a window or open the sun roof there is some odd kind of Whistling noise "that drives my in sane" And it has been doing that every sense the day we bought it!!!🤪🤨🤔🥺🤯!! We have had our H-RV of course now for 2 years and the only Issues We have noticed was... In the past week there is two lights that came on in my information panel one say's "Emissions problem" and the other one says "Electric break system problem" and tells me to see my dealer.

First new car and not a disappointment

This car looks sporty on the outside but is fairly spacious for a small SUV. It's around the same interior size as the old CR-Vs which I drove for 10 years prior. My only complaint is the lack of cup holders for the driver and passenger. Otherwise it is a great medium car.

Love my Honda

I've only had this car for a little over a week now and it did take some getting use to being it's smaller than the CR-V but I do like it and it handles well.
