The Toyota Avalon, a full-size sedan, has been a staple of Toyota's lineup since 1994, offering a comfortable and spacious alternative to smaller sedans. The 2016 model is part of the fourth generation. It is available in trims like XLE, XLE Premium, XLE Touring, Limited and Hybrid options. Pricing typically ranged from the low $30,000s to around $40,000 when new. Its popularity stems from its roomy interior, smooth ride, and Toyota's reputation for reliability.
The Good

The 2016 Avalon boasts a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to practical buyers seeking reliability and spaciousness. Performance is adequate for daily driving, while the updated design offers a more modern aesthetic. Emotional buyers will appreciate the luxurious interior and smooth driving experience. Good fuel economy (especially in the hybrid) adds to its value.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2016 Avalon's infotainment system can feel dated compared to rivals. Some owners have reported minor issues with the electronics. The Avalon's handling isn't as sporty as some competitors. Be sure to inspect for proper maintenance, especially regarding oil changes, as neglect can lead to problems over time.

What Problems Does the 2016 Toyota Avalon Have?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon generally enjoys a good reputation for reliability. However, some frequently reported problems and potential concerns include issues with the infotainment system, such as glitches, slow response times, or connectivity problems with smartphones.
There have been some reports of minor electrical issues, such as problems with sensors or the navigation system. Some owners have reported issues with the paint, particularly with chipping or peeling. These issues are often cosmetic but can be a concern for some buyers.
Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any specific recalls affecting the 2016 Avalon. Recalls can vary and address safety-related defects. Some Avalons from this era may have had recalls related to fuel pumps (leading to potential stalling) or other safety-related issues. Long-term reliability is generally good, but as with any vehicle, regular maintenance is crucial. Pay close attention to the hybrid models, as battery health is a key factor in their long-term performance and cost of ownership. Early signs of battery degradation can affect fuel economy and performance. It's always recommended to obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before buying a used 2016 Avalon.

How long will the 2016 Toyota Avalon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Toyota Avalon can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report that these cars can last 10-15 years with diligent care. Key to long-term durability is following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, especially regular oil changes and fluid checks. Weaknesses that may emerge over time include potential wear and tear on suspension components, the aforementioned infotainment issues becoming more pronounced, and, for hybrid models, gradual degradation of the hybrid battery pack, potentially reducing fuel economy and requiring eventual replacement.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and USB ports. Higher trims offer features like a navigation system, premium JBL audio, and wireless charging.
Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert (available on XLE Premium and higher), adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection (available on Limited trim). Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags.
Optional features include automatic high beams and rain-sensing wipers (Limited trim).
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally very good for the 2016 Avalon. The IIHS often awards the Avalon with a "Top Safety Pick" rating, indicating strong performance in various crash tests. Specific ratings can be found on the IIHS and NHTSA websites. These strong safety ratings are a significant selling point for families and safety-conscious buyers.

2016 Toyota Avalon Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Toyota Avalon had a starting MSRP in the low $30,000s, with higher trims approaching $40,000. Current used market prices range from around $15,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Avalon depreciates at a moderate rate, holding its value reasonably well due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (Limited models typically command higher prices), and whether the vehicle has a clean title and service history. Hybrid models also tend to retain value better due to their fuel efficiency.

2016 Toyota Avalon Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Toyota Avalon is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the hybrid model. Maintenance is generally affordable due to Toyota's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs are typically less frequent and expensive compared to some European rivals. Long-term ownership costs are predictable and relatively low, making it a financially sensible choice for many buyers. Regular servicing is key to keeping costs down.

Insurance for a 2016 Toyota Avalon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Toyota Avalon Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon competes with vehicles like the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Nissan Maxima, and Chrysler 300. In terms of reliability, the Avalon generally excels, often surpassing its American rivals. The Nissan Maxima offers a sportier driving experience, while the Avalon prioritizes comfort. The Buick LaCrosse provides a more luxurious interior feel in some trims, but the Avalon often edges it out in predicted reliability. The Chrysler 300 offers bold styling and available V8 power, while the Avalon focuses on efficiency and refinement.
Feature-wise, the competitors are generally well-matched, though the infotainment systems of some rivals might feel more modern. Pricewise, the Avalon is typically competitive.
Alternatives to consider include the Lexus ES (for a more luxurious experience, essentially a more upscale Avalon) or the Acura TLX (for a balance of sportiness and luxury). The Kia Cadenza (later K900) offers compelling value. Whether one of these is "better" depends on individual priorities – sportiness, luxury, or absolute cost.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Toyota Avalon a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable, reliable, and spacious full-size sedan. It's a good choice for families, commuters, and anyone prioritizing a smooth ride and Toyota's reputation for longevity. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, given its depreciation. The Limited trim offers the most features, but the XLE and XLE Premium provide excellent value for money. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to assess the vehicle's condition, particularly if you're looking at a higher-mileage example. The hybrid models are worth considering for their excellent fuel economy, but factor in potential battery replacement costs down the line.

Toyota Quality

The absolute best vehicle for the money. Yes, you can buy other brands that are higher priced but this vehicle is by far the best I have driven. The sense of security and comfort is what I rate this vehicle for.

2016 Toyota Avalon

I own a 2016 Toyota Avalon, bought it brand new in 2016. This is by far the best car I ever purchased, a little expensive but worth it. Currently has 74K. Never had a single problem with it. As long you maintain regular maintenance, this car can last for several years. I will buy Avalon again in.

mechanical and interior design lacking

A fast transition from the brake peddle to accelerator peddle results in acceleration being delayed. This problem is dangerous when transitioning from brake to acceleration such as merging into traffic. This a design issue.

Best Car I’ve Owned So Far!

Hands down the 2016 Toyota Avalon Touring Edition is the best car overall in it’s class! It has everything I was looking for - Heated Seats, Sunroof, Remote Start, Leather Seats, Sport Mode, and GPS Navigation under a great price! It is the complete car and it’s fun to drive. Backseat and trunk space is also another major factor. The only downside is the gas mileage/ fuel efficiency but it’s a big and fast vehicle.
