The 2015 Subaru WRX, a performance-oriented compact car, continues Subaru's rally-inspired legacy. This generation (2015-2021) marked a significant redesign. Available as a sedan, key trims include the base WRX, Premium, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and engaging driving dynamics. Original pricing ranged from approximately $26,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2015 WRX offers thrilling performance thanks to its turbocharged engine and AWD system, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Its relative reliability (with proper maintenance) and practicality as a daily driver make it a smart choice. The design is aggressive and sporty, while decent fuel economy and strong resale value add to its appeal for practical buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 WRX include reports of engine issues like oil consumption and potential for rod knock, particularly in modified vehicles. The interior, while functional, isn't the most luxurious. The ride can be stiff, and the infotainment system is dated. Rust can also be an issue in colder climates. Thorough inspection is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2015 Subaru WRX Have?

The 2015 Subaru WRX has faced some frequently reported problems. Notably, engine issues, particularly excessive oil consumption and instances of "rod knock," have been documented, although they aren't universally experienced. These issues seem more prevalent in modified vehicles or those that haven't received meticulous maintenance. Some owners have reported issues with the CVT transmission, particularly hesitation or jerky behavior.
Recalls for the 2015 WRX have included concerns about the fuel pump and potential engine stalling. Check the NHTSA website for specific recall information and whether the VIN of a prospective purchase has been affected and resolved.
Long-term reliability can be a concern if maintenance is neglected. The WRX's performance-oriented nature means it can be more susceptible to wear and tear if driven aggressively. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, can also be a long-term concern. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate potential issues.

How long will the 2015 Subaru WRX last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2015 Subaru WRX can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, its lifespan heavily depends on driving style and maintenance. Aggressive driving and neglected maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include potential engine issues (oil consumption, rod knock) and rust. The CVT transmission, if equipped, may also require attention as it ages. Proper care, including timely fluid changes and inspections, is crucial.

Negative Owner Reviews
CanoeMan104
I have owned this car for 9mos now and I have discovered numerous issues with it. The windshield makes a creaking noise when cold. The gauge cluster and tweeter rattle while driving down the road. I personally have noticed a issue with the shifter being very sloppy.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Subaru WRX features a standard 4.3-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims offer options like a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation system, and a Harmon Kardon sound system. The infotainment system is generally considered dated compared to newer vehicles.
Driver-assistance features are limited in the base model but may include a rearview camera. Higher trims may offer features like fog lights and automatic headlights. Subaru's EyeSight system, including adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, was *not* available on the 2015 WRX.
Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags. The 2015 WRX received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), earning a "Top Safety Pick" award. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. Confirm specific ratings and reports from these agencies.

2015 Subaru WRX Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Subaru WRX had a starting MSRP around $26,295 when new, with higher trims reaching close to $30,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $15,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Depreciation is moderate, holding value relatively well due to its popularity and performance reputation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, modifications (which can sometimes decrease value), and trim level. Well-maintained, unmodified examples tend to command higher prices.

2015 Subaru WRX Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 WRX can be higher than average due to its performance nature. Fuel costs are moderate, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance costs can be average to slightly above average, with regular oil changes and potential for more frequent repairs due to its performance-oriented design. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, depending on maintenance and potential repairs. Overall, it's not the most economical car to own, but offers a thrilling driving experience.

How Does the 2015 Subaru WRX Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru WRX competes with cars like the Volkswagen GTI, Ford Focus ST (discontinued), and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (discontinued, but relevant in the used market). The WRX offers standard AWD, a key differentiator. Performance-wise, it's comparable to the GTI and Focus ST, though the Evo offers more extreme performance.
Feature-wise, the WRX's interior and tech are generally less refined than the GTI. Reliability is a mixed bag; the WRX can be reliable with proper maintenance, but engine issues are a concern. The GTI is generally considered more reliable. Price-wise, the WRX is typically competitive.
Alternatives: The VW GTI offers a more refined interior and generally better reliability, but lacks AWD. The Ford Focus ST provides similar performance but is FWD only. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (used) offers superior performance, but at the cost of higher maintenance and potentially lower reliability. A newer Honda Civic Si could also be considered for a blend of performance and practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Subaru WRX a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru WRX is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate performance, AWD, and a sporty driving experience. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential weaknesses and willing to prioritize maintenance. A used model can be a good value, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential, especially focusing on engine health and rust. The Premium or Limited trims offer more desirable features, but the base model can be a good starting point for budget-conscious buyers. Avoid heavily modified examples unless you have a deep understanding of Subaru engines and tuning.

First Subaru I've had, not going to be the last on

Fun, fast and fuel friendly (when not applying the first 2 adjectives :)) I have owned 3 Civic SIs before this WRX. Take the SIs + more power and AWD and you have a WRX for roughly the same price. Reliability> I put it a few ticks below the Honda (I don't see these going 200,000 + problem free miles as my previous Hondas), but I would still consider it reliable. Easy to maintain with the oil filter right on top. Looking forward to owning another Subi down the road.
