The 2017 Subaru WRX is a performance-oriented compact sedan, born from Subaru's rally heritage. Part of the fourth generation (2014-2021), it's available solely as a four-door sedan. Key trims include the base WRX, Premium, Limited, and STI. New pricing ranged from roughly $27,000 to $41,000. The WRX is popular due to its turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and engaging driving experience, offering a unique blend of practicality and performance.
The Good

The 2017 WRX boasts exhilarating turbocharged performance and Subaru's legendary all-wheel drive, appealing to driving enthusiasts. It offers decent reliability and practicality for daily use. Its aggressive styling and sporty interior also contribute to its appeal. Though not the most fuel-efficient, it offers good value considering its performance capabilities. Some buyers may find the ride less comfortable.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2017 WRX include a firm ride that some may find uncomfortable. The interior quality, while improved, still lags behind some competitors. Fuel economy isn't a strong point. Watch for potential oil consumption issues and be wary of heavily modified examples, as these can indicate past abuse or neglect. The infotainment system can also feel dated.

What Problems Does the 2017 Subaru WRX Have?

The 2017 Subaru WRX, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Oil consumption can be an issue for some owners, particularly with the earlier models of this generation. It's crucial to monitor oil levels regularly. Some owners have reported premature clutch failure, especially with aggressive driving or modifications. The infotainment system can be slow and buggy. Recalls for the 2017 WRX have included issues related to the fuel pump and the electronic power steering system. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the turbocharged engine and its associated components. Proper maintenance, including frequent oil changes and avoiding excessive boost, is critical to longevity. The STI model, with its more powerful engine, can be more susceptible to issues if not properly maintained or if heavily modified. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended, especially for used models, to check for signs of wear, modifications, or potential problems. Check the vehicle history report for any prior accidents or service records.

How long will the 2017 Subaru WRX last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2017 Subaru WRX can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, belts), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability hinges on proper care of the turbocharged engine. Weaknesses over time can include increased oil consumption, potential turbocharger failure, and wear of suspension components. Examples that have been heavily modified or driven aggressively may experience reduced longevity. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Regular washing and undercarriage cleaning can mitigate this.

This car meet all my needs. 4 doors, manual transmission, smooth ride, reliable, quick, comfortable and much more. The heated seats and moon roof were a great extra.

My 2017 WRX does a good balancing act as a fun, sporty driver's car and a family hauler. Perhaps the quality is just shy of a Honda, but I'm quite satisfied with it!

I’ve owned the car for a year and have had 0 issues with it. The car has treated me to nice power without sacrificing any reliability.
Negative Owner Reviews

I wanted a fun daily driver so I purchased the WRX as it is AWD. The car had a transmission issue where first gear would pop out. Tried to get it fixed at a dealer nearby, they claimed they "fixed" it by replacing things, but the problem persisted. Bring it back again, and now they claim it is my fault. It was a decent car, but the headaches that came with it were not worth it. I have lost faith in Subaru.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Subaru WRX comes standard with a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Higher trims offer a larger 7-inch touchscreen with Subaru's Starlink app integration, which includes features like Pandora and Aha Radio. Optional features include a Harman Kardon premium audio system, navigation, and keyless access with push-button start.

Driver-assistance features, depending on the trim, include blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist. Adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking were *not* available on the manual transmission WRX or STI in 2017. These features were available on WRX models equipped with the CVT transmission as part of the EyeSight system.

Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good for the 2017 WRX. It earned a "Top Safety Pick" award when equipped with EyeSight, due to its superior front crash prevention system. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2017 WRX an overall safety rating of five stars.

2017 Subaru WRX Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Subaru WRX ranged from approximately $27,000 to $41,000, depending on the trim and options. Used market prices currently (as of late 2023) range from around $18,000 to $32,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation is moderate, holding value relatively well compared to some other vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (accident-free and well-maintained examples command higher prices), trim level (STI models typically hold their value better), and the presence of desirable options. Heavily modified examples may actually depreciate more due to concerns about reliability and abuse.

2017 Subaru WRX Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Subaru WRX isn't the most economical car to own. Insurance costs can be higher due to its sporty nature and performance capabilities. Fuel economy is decent but not exceptional, especially with enthusiastic driving. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for the turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive system. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than average due to potential maintenance needs and the risk of more expensive repairs. Budgeting for potential issues is advisable.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Subaru WRX Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2017 Subaru WRX competes with vehicles like the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si, Ford Focus ST (discontinued), and Hyundai Elantra N (later models). In terms of performance, the WRX offers comparable or slightly better acceleration and handling than the Civic Si and GTI, but the STI surpasses them all. However, the GTI offers a more refined interior and potentially better fuel economy. Feature-wise, the WRX is competitive, but some rivals may offer more advanced infotainment or driver-assistance systems (depending on trim). Reliability is comparable to the GTI, but the Civic Si is generally considered more reliable. The WRX's standard all-wheel drive is a significant advantage over most competitors, especially in inclement weather.

In terms of price, the WRX is generally competitively priced. Alternatives include the Honda Civic Type R (more expensive but higher performance), Volkswagen Golf R (more refined and sophisticated all-wheel drive), or a used BMW 3 Series (offering a more luxurious experience but potentially higher running costs). For someone prioritizing all-wheel-drive performance, the WRX is a strong contender. For a more comfortable and refined daily driver, the GTI or a used Acura TLX might be better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a Good Sedan?

The 2017 Subaru WRX is ideal for driving enthusiasts who prioritize performance, all-wheel drive, and a sporty driving experience. It's worth buying if you understand its quirks and are prepared for slightly higher running costs. A used WRX can be a good value, but a pre-purchase inspection is crucial to assess its condition and history. Avoid heavily modified examples unless you are comfortable with the risks. The Premium or Limited trims offer a better balance of features and value than the base model. If you need a comfortable and refined daily driver above all else, consider alternatives. If performance and AWD are key, the WRX delivers.

The most exhilarating compact sedan you will drive

The Subaru WRX lost its signature subie rumble when it was redesigned with the all new FA20DIT engine. However, don't let that deter you from this Subaru WRX because what it lacks for in noise it more than makes up for in the performance department. The instant turbo spool and glorious turbo noises that come from under the hood can be only described as HEAVEN. The car offers more performance than what can legally be had on the streets and that is ok with me. The perfect car that doubles as a family sedan.

Pocket Rocket

Interior quality can be improved. Rattles and shakes from day one. It common across most Subaru cars, but it's high time the company improve on that.

Car had numerous problems since I got it.

Replaced the battery after the first year, throwout bearing replaced on second year, oil leak after 4th maintenance visit. By end of 2nd year, 33000 miles. The car engine trembled with engine lights on during my drive. Took two months for tech to figure out the issue and currently on the fourth month trying to get a replacement vehicle. Car is fun to drive but not reliable at all.
