Analysis

What Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Spark Have?

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark has had a few frequently reported issues, with some owners reporting problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), experiencing slipping or erratic shifting.
Another concern revolves around the air conditioning system, with some reports of the A/C compressor failing prematurely.
Excessive oil consumption has also been reported by some owners, requiring frequent top-ups between oil changes.
While not widespread, some owners have encountered issues with the infotainment system freezing or becoming unresponsive.
Regarding recalls, it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls specific to the 2020 model year, as these can vary. It is important to periodically check for new recalls as they arise. Previous model years have had recalls related to airbag inflators, which could potentially affect the 2020 model as well, so checking recall history is vital. Long-term reliability can be affected by the CVT issues and the potential for A/C compressor failure. Regular maintenance, especially frequent oil changes, can help mitigate some of the potential engine issues.

How long will the 2020 Chevrolet Spark last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Chevrolet Spark can realistically last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially providing 10-15 years of service. Factors influencing longevity include regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission (especially the CVT), and addressing any cooling system issues promptly.
Long-term durability concerns primarily revolve around the CVT's reliability and potential engine issues like oil consumption. The interior, while functional, may show wear and tear over time due to the materials used. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt use. Regularly washing and waxing the car can help protect the body from rust.

I have had my spark for almost a year. About a month after i got it my cousin wanted to ride in my car she went to fasten the seabelt because i will tell u to get out. It fasten. Mind you it was night time was slowing down on a back road for a intersection a deer pops out. I slam hard on my brakes my steering will jerks both ways on this gravel road and her seat belt comes flying off hits the windshield and freaks us both out. Then wouldn't click back no matter how many times we try for over an hour until we give up and she rides in the back the rest of the way to home. I am afraid to let anyone ride shot gun in my car ever after that. The ones who do know they can't because my pasenger seat belt doesn't All ways latch or comes undone after it is fastened. I agree also with the acceleration of my car as All ways. Was at a stop light at the bottom of a hill in cinncinati ohio picking up a relative. It turned green a four lane road making a turn it took a min just so it would accelerate and i almost get t-boned when a person ran a red light That day. I love the gas mileage since i drive up to an hour to an hour and a half to work 5 to 7 days a week.

Negative Owner Reviews

The raspberry Spark was nice to look at and seemed a good choice when purchased. I had a brief test drive but did not get the full driving experience till I actually owned it. I had the basic package. I could not adjust the mirrors when driving, unlock the doors from the driver seat nor from outside the car,nor control the windows. That was very inconvenient. My biggest complaint was lack of excelleration after a full stop at stop sign. I live in Phila. and when there are four people at a stop sign and it is your turn to go and your car won't move it becomes dangerous when the others decide you aren't taking your turn. On more than one occasion this happened with a close call collision. The car is good on gas, parking is easier and the design is attractive. It was not easy to get in and out of for me and when I got out my legs were almost asleep. I think this vehicle would suit a petite person. The design and color were nice, just not for me.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark features a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, allowing seamless smartphone integration for navigation, music, and calls. A rearview camera is also standard across all trims.
Higher trims offer features like keyless entry and start, heated front seats, and rear parking sensors.
Driver-assistance features are limited but include available lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking on higher trims, which are valuable safety additions.
Optional features include a sunroof and various appearance packages.
In terms of safety, the 2020 Spark comes standard with 10 airbags. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) provide crash-test ratings. For specific 2020 Spark ratings, it's best to consult their respective websites, but generally, the Spark performs reasonably well in crash tests for a car of its size, though its small size inherently places it at a disadvantage compared to larger vehicles. The availability of active safety features on upper trims contributes to overall safety.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark had a starting MSRP around $14,000 to $18,000 when new, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $14,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation is relatively high for the Spark, typical of subcompact cars. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and demand for small, fuel-efficient vehicles. Cars in excellent condition with low mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The availability of popular features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can also positively influence resale value.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its value and safety features. Excellent fuel economy translates to significant savings at the pump. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively inexpensive. While some repairs, like potential CVT issues, can be costly, overall, the Spark's long-term ownership costs are low, making it an attractive option for budget-minded buyers. This car is not costly to own given the low maintenance and fuel costs.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Chevrolet Spark is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Chevrolet Spark Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark competes with other subcompact cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage, Kia Rio, and Nissan Versa. In terms of performance, the Spark lags behind some rivals; its 98-horsepower engine is noticeably less powerful than the Nissan Versa's. The Mitsubishi Mirage is similar in power, but is known for poor performance as well. Features are comparable across the class, with most offering smartphone integration.
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Kia Rio generally has a stronger reputation for reliability. The Spark has had more owner complaints about its CVT. The Nissan Versa offers more standard safety features.
Price is where the Spark shines; it is one of the most affordable new cars available. Alternatives to consider include a used Honda Fit, which offers significantly more cargo space and better reliability, or a slightly larger and newer Kia Rio for improved power and warranty. If affordability is the top priority, the Spark is a solid choice, but if you value performance or space, alternatives might be better suited. For the budget conscious consumer, the Spark may be a good fit.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Chevrolet Spark a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark is ideal for city dwellers, students, or anyone prioritizing affordability and fuel efficiency. It's a worthwhile purchase as a used car, especially for those seeking a reliable commuter vehicle on a tight budget. However, potential buyers should be aware of the limitations in performance and space. A used Spark 1LT or Activ trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid the base LS if possible, due to the lack of power windows and locks. Get a pre-purchase inspection to check for any CVT issues or excessive oil consumption before buying. Weigh needs and budget constraints before purchasing.

A fuel efficient 5 speed for today!

First of all, I am a stick guy. I bought a 5 speed 2021 Spark, I prefer shifting and have been for over 50 years. I get 40+mpg most of the time. I am 68, and our family has full sized pickup, full size SUV and other vehicles. So not my only car, but the most fuel efficient. It is the one I want to take especially when driving alone. I pull trailers with other vehicles, but am very pleased this small car is so efficient and even with a small 4 cyl and reviews of underpowered, when you know how to use the manual transmission, it can have plenty of passing power. I am an engineer and understand, a simple fuel efficient car is not going to accelerate like a muscle car, and don’t expect it to!
