The 2013 Chevrolet Spark is a subcompact hatchback that arrived on the scene as part of the Spark's first generation in the US market. This quirky city car is known for its maneuverability and affordability. Key trims included the LS and 1LT. The pricing range typically started under $13,000 when new. Its vibrant color options and compact size made it popular for navigating crowded urban environments. It stands out for its surprising spaciousness for its size and its fuel efficiency.
The Good

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark offers excellent fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers looking to save money on gas. Its compact design and ease of parking are ideal for city dwellers. Emotionally, its playful styling and available bright colors can be attractive. While not a performance powerhouse, it's reliable and provides adequate comfort for short trips, representing good value.

The Bad

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark's small engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or on the highway. The interior materials are basic, and the ride can be somewhat harsh on rough roads. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission and air conditioning. Be sure to check for these common problems before purchasing. It is known to have a smaller cargo area.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Spark Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Chevrolet Spark include issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or hesitation when shifting. Some owners have reported problems with the air conditioning system, such as the compressor failing or the system not blowing cold air. There have also been reports of issues with the infotainment system, including freezing or malfunctioning touchscreens. Premature wear of the timing chain has been noted as well, leading to engine problems if not addressed.
Recalls for the 2013 Spark included issues related to potential rollaway risk due to a faulty shift lever. There were also recalls related to hood latch issues that could cause the hood to open unexpectedly while driving.
Long-term reliability concerns often center around the longevity of the engine and transmission, especially with consistent city driving. The small engine is worked hard, which can contribute to wear and tear over time. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid checks, is crucial to mitigate these issues. It's important to check the vehicle's history for recall repairs and address any known problems promptly.

How long will the 2013 Chevrolet Spark last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Chevrolet Spark can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or failing to address minor issues can significantly shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include potential timing chain wear, transmission issues (especially in automatics), and degradation of interior components. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are essential for maximizing its lifespan. The air conditioning system may also require attention over time.

I just got brand new tires for it today, new oil change, also was checked out by my mechanic and everything is good to go for it to be sold to its potential new owner. This car has been nothing but good to me since I have gotten it.
Nikki

Negative Owner Reviews

For more you accelerate the car does not respond and the times that I went out to road is way too uncomfortable

I liked this car when i first bought it but after 2 1/2 years i am ready to get something else. it has had a few recalls and a couple of them were major like oil consumption and coolant tank leak. it still does this funny thing sometimes when you start it the car runs really rough then smooths out, chevy does not know what is wrong with it still after being in the shop 2 times. It seems like the car is louder and has less power now then when it was new. I might keep it another 3 or 4 months just too see if it has any more problems and if it does i am trading it in for either a sonic or cruze or a toyota.

My 2014 Chevy Spark , needs a flame πŸ™ ,,I bought it on a Monday , new, drove it 3 times. on Saturday the check engine light came on , took it right to the dealer, they turned it off, got up Sunday, light came back on, took it back to the dealer with a total of 81 miles, on it , I have not seen the car since , that was 15 days ago , GM is supposed to be trying to figure out the problem, as not only my car has it happening , but other sparks are having the same problem..They GM, is paying for a loaner, plus they said they would make 2 car payments, I haven't seen that yet, What do I do I am feed up with the nonsense, I am 71 and this is my very first new car, WHAT are my options ? Lemon law in NY is 30 days , I am on 15 without a car..

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark offered a reasonable amount of tech for its class. The base LS trim included a four-speaker audio system and OnStar. Stepping up to the 1LT trim added power windows and locks, cruise control, a six-speaker sound system, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, and Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen. The MyLink system allowed smartphone integration for apps like Pandora and Stitcher.
Driver-assistance features were minimal, mainly consisting of standard anti-lock brakes and stability control. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.
Safety features included a full complement of airbags, including front, side, and knee airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary depending on the specific test, but generally, the Spark received good overall safety scores for its class. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests and provided ratings. The Spark's small size can be a disadvantage in collisions with larger vehicles.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark had a starting MSRP of around $12,995 for the base LS model. Used market prices in today's market can range from approximately $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Spark depreciates significantly over time due to its initial low price and the availability of newer, more feature-rich vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like the MyLink infotainment system. Low demand for subcompact cars also contributes to faster depreciation.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its low value and safety record. Fuel costs are also low thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency. Maintenance costs are average, with relatively inexpensive parts. Repair costs can be higher if major components like the transmission fail. Long-term ownership costs are primarily driven by potential repairs and regular maintenance, but overall, it is considered an affordable vehicle to own, making it suitable for budget-conscious buyers.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Chevrolet Spark is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle 4-Window; Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Spark Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle 4-Window; Hatchback?

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark competes with other subcompacts like the Fiat 500, Mitsubishi Mirage, and Kia Rio. In terms of performance, the Spark is generally less powerful than some rivals. The Fiat 500 offers a more engaging driving experience, while the Mirage is known for its fuel efficiency. In terms of features, the Spark's MyLink system was a plus, but some competitors offered more advanced features or better-quality interiors.
Reliability can be a concern with the Spark, with some owners reporting transmission and engine issues. The Kia Rio generally has a better reputation for reliability. In terms of price, the Spark was often one of the most affordable options.
Alternatives to the 2013 Spark include the Kia Rio, which offers better reliability and more features for a slightly higher price. The Honda Fit, while slightly larger and more expensive, provides significantly more cargo space and a more refined driving experience. If fuel efficiency is the primary concern, the Mitsubishi Mirage might be a suitable alternative, though it lacks performance.

Bought it new.

Bought it new. Taken several road trips with and no problems ever. I still own and drive it . Love the gas milage. I get 32 mpg around my town and upto 40mpg on open road. Cargo space is tricky. Only drawback is back seats will not flatten in order to extend cargo space.

Great car, obviously low performance for ~84 HP.

Personally, I would recommend this car. I'm big on expensive sound systems, so stock was obviously not a choice for me. But unfortunately the speaker locations are a bit weird and not suitable, but I made it work. It's so easy to do things with the car, and maintenance is easy.

A Sassy Lime Green Car

I "upgraded" to the Spark after my SUV was totaled in an accident. This car is fun to drive and gets the job done with little to no frills (which is fine with me). I've owned my Spark since 2014 and have had no problems with it functioning thus far. There is no CD player or USB outlets but there is an AUX hookup so I can listen to music from my iPhone while driving. Everyone is amazed at the legroom in the car since it looks amusingly small from the outside. Plenty of trunk space for my needs and great on gas!

Best first car

I drive this to college and it is very reliable. However, hot days can take a toll on the engine so try to run the heater on hot days to keep the engine cooler.
