The 2021 Chevrolet Spark is a subcompact hatchback designed for urban environments and budget-conscious buyers. Part of the Spark's second generation (introduced in 2016), it's available as a four-door hatchback. Key trims include the LS, 1LT, ACTIV, and 2LT. Known for its maneuverability, fuel efficiency, and affordability, the Spark's appeal lies in its ease of parking, low running costs, and user-friendly infotainment system. Its original MSRP ranged from approximately $13,600 to $17,000.

The Good

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark offers excellent fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its compact size makes it easy to park and maneuver in cities. A spunky, youthful design and available vibrant colors attract emotional buyers seeking a fun, affordable city car. While not powerful, its reliability is generally good, contributing to its overall value.

The Bad

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark suffers from a weak engine, resulting in slow acceleration, especially on highways. Its small size translates to limited cargo space and cramped rear seating. What Problems Does the 2021 Chevrolet Spark Have?

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark generally enjoys decent reliability, but some issues have been reported. Some owners have experienced issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), including shuddering, slipping, or failure, particularly at higher mileage. Engine issues, although less frequent, can include oil consumption or sensor malfunctions. Electrical problems, such as issues with the infotainment system or sensors, have also been noted.

Recalls are important to monitor. Check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any recalls specific to the 2021 model year. While not necessarily widespread, recalls can address critical safety concerns. Long-term reliability can be impacted by adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Neglecting routine maintenance like oil changes and fluid flushes can accelerate wear and tear on the engine and transmission.

While the 2021 model year itself doesn't have a long track record yet, analyzing the reliability trends of previous Spark model years (2016-2020) can provide insights into potential long-term issues. Generally, the Spark has proven reasonably reliable, but as with any vehicle, preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan and minimizing potential problems. Regular inspection and addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into major repairs.

How long will the 2021 Chevrolet Spark last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Chevrolet Spark can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially providing 10-13 years of service. Longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. Weaknesses over time might include wear and tear on suspension components, potential CVT issues (if equipped), and gradual degradation of interior materials. Proper care can mitigate these issues and extend the vehicle’s lifespan significantly.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark includes a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This allows for seamless smartphone integration for navigation, music, and communication. Standard safety features include a rearview camera.

Available driver-assistance features, depending on the trim, can include automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. These features can help prevent accidents and enhance driver awareness.

Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) provide insights into the vehicle’s safety performance in various collision scenarios. It's important to consult these ratings for a comprehensive understanding of the Spark’s safety capabilities. Keep in mind that small cars generally perform differently in crash tests compared to larger vehicles. While it offers basic safety features, its small size might inherently limit its ability to protect occupants in severe collisions. Always check the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most up-to-date and detailed safety information.

Optional features may include a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote keyless entry, adding convenience for connectivity and accessibility.

2021 Chevrolet Spark Prices and Market Value

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark had a starting MSRP of around $13,600 when new, with higher trims reaching approximately $17,000. Used market prices currently range from $8,000 to $14,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Spark depreciates moderately, influenced by factors like mileage, condition, and market demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. Lower mileage examples and those in excellent condition command higher resale values. The availability of driver-assistance features and desirable options also impacts resale value.

2021 Chevrolet Spark Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark is generally very economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its small size and affordable price. Fuel efficiency is excellent, minimizing fuel expenses. 2021 Chevrolet Spark Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Chevrolet Spark is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Chevrolet Spark Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark competes with vehicles like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Kia Rio. The Spark generally offers better infotainment and a more refined driving experience than the Mirage, but the Mirage often boasts a longer warranty. Compared to the Kia Rio, the Spark is smaller and less powerful, but significantly more affordable.

In terms of reliability, the Spark is generally on par with its competitors, though some models have faced CVT issues. Feature-wise, the Spark’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are a strong selling point. Pricing is a significant advantage for the Spark, making it one of the most affordable new cars on the market.

Alternatives to consider include the Kia Rio (for more space and power at a slightly higher price) and a used Honda Fit (for more versatility and cargo capacity). The Nissan Versa is also a strong contender, offering more features and a more comfortable ride than the Spark, albeit at a slightly higher cost. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and budget. If affordability is the top priority, the Spark is hard to beat. If more space, power, or features are desired, exploring alternatives is recommended.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Chevrolet Spark a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Chevrolet Spark is an ideal city car for budget-conscious individuals and urban dwellers prioritizing affordability, fuel efficiency, and ease of parking. It's worth buying if you understand its limitations regarding power and space. A used Spark, particularly the 1LT or ACTIV trim for added features like power windows and alloy wheels, represents excellent value. Avoid heavily used examples with high mileage if CVT reliability is a concern. If you need a basic, reliable, and inexpensive car for short commutes, the Spark is a solid choice. However, if you require more space, power, or advanced features, consider alternatives.

Not the best car but it is affordable.

Car struggles to accelerate at highway speeds. fuel tank is so small you burn through fuel in a short time. Radio struggles to play music from a plugged in phone without introducing static… armrest only for driver and does not adjust.

Love it.

We bought our 2020 1LT for our daughter’s graduation present. We wanted something small, cheap, and brand new for her, so the cheapest at the time were the Spark and the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Spark just at a glance looked so much better than the dated and cheap looking Mirage. Daughter loves it. She’s off at college now and the car is home and I’ve been using it. I Drive a full size pickup and wife’s vehicle is a very full size SUV/truck. I am surprised how much I love this little car, it’s not fast on acceleration but it’s still so fun to drive, an reasonably comfortable for me and I’m 6’2”/ 240

Best value for money

I own the LS model with the manual windows and it does not have power locks or mirrors. I got it because I needed a reliable car, and this has exceeded my expectation. It is not the most comfortable seat, but again I didn't buy it because I wanted a Benz, and it could be much worse. I have put 9k miles on it with a few very long trips and it has done great!

surprised! on April 15, 2021

Pleasantly surprised when I rented it on vacation.

I needed a rental car for a few days while on a short Florida vacation. Since it was just me and my son I thought it would be fun to rent the smallest available car I could find for "go cart" type thrills. I unexpectedly found this tiny car to be very impressive and an absolute blast to drive. We did a highway stretch between Jupiter and Disney/Orlando. Zipping along at speeds that I wont specify on a public post, I felt safe and in control at all times and i loved the almost motorcycle-ish connection to the road. No sarcasm...honestly it felt sporty and fun. It accelerates surprisingly well and the interior is well laid out, roomy like hatchbacks tend to be, nice sound system, Apple Car Play etc. I dont know its crash test rating, but if it is rated as safe and you are looking for a practical and fun to drive car this seems pretty good.
