What Problems Does the 2017 Chevrolet Spark Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Chevrolet Spark often revolve around the infotainment system, with users reporting glitches, slow response times, and connectivity issues.
Some owners have experienced problems with the air conditioning system, including weak airflow or failure.
Transmission issues, particularly with the CVT, have been reported, including hesitation and rough shifting. There have been some recalls related to potential rollaway issues with the automatic transmission and potential seat frame welding issues.
Long-term reliability concerns generally center on the longevity of the CVT transmission, as well as the durability of the smaller engine under prolonged stress.
Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes for the transmission, is crucial. Checking for any outstanding recalls and addressing them promptly is also advised. Pre-purchase inspections should pay close attention to the CVT's condition and the operation of the air conditioning.

How long will the 2017 Chevrolet Spark last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Chevrolet Spark can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years.
However, this is heavily dependent on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid services (especially for the CVT), and timely repairs.
Weaknesses over time include potential wear and tear on the CVT transmission, as well as potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Preventative maintenance is crucial for maximizing longevity.

I didn't want this vehicle at all I just got stuck with it. Only thing its good for is the gas and music. Too small!
Madgw
The car reliably got me from A to B and the back up camera helped me fit in nearly all parking spaces. It was easy to drive and pretty comfortable for its size, but one can only fit so much in such a small space. Great gas mileage for people who drive alot.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, making smartphone integration seamless.
Bluetooth connectivity is also standard, allowing for hands-free calling and audio streaming. A rearview camera is standard across all trims.
Higher trims offer features like remote keyless entry, cruise control, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Available driver-assistance features are limited, but rear park assist is available on the 2LT trim.
Safety features include 10 airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2017 Spark an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Spark a Good rating in several crash tests, but a Marginal rating in the small overlap front test. The standard rearview camera significantly enhances safety during parking maneuvers. The inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a significant tech advantage in this vehicle class.

2017 Chevrolet Spark Prices and Market Value

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark had a starting MSRP of around $13,000 to $17,000 when new, depending on the trim and options.
Currently, used market prices range from approximately $7,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Spark depreciates relatively quickly due to its subcompact nature and the availability of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and any accident history. Low mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The presence of desirable features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also boosts resale value.

2017 Chevrolet Spark Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is generally considered very economical to own.
Insurance costs are typically low due to its small size and safety ratings.
Fuel consumption is excellent, further reducing running costs.
Routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive.
However, potential repairs to the CVT transmission could be costly. Overall, the Spark offers a low cost of ownership, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. Long-term costs can be kept down with diligent maintenance.

How Does the 2017 Chevrolet Spark Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark competes with vehicles like the Mitsubishi Mirage, Fiat 500, and Kia Rio (though the Rio is slightly larger).
In terms of performance, the Spark is similar to the Mirage but falls short of the Rio. The Fiat 500 offers more style but less practicality. Feature-wise, the Spark's standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto give it an edge over some competitors.
Reliability is generally on par with the Mirage, but the Rio typically enjoys a slightly better reputation. Price-wise, the Spark is competitive.
Alternatives to consider include a used Honda Fit, which offers significantly more cargo space and better driving dynamics, albeit at a potentially higher price point. A Kia Rio offers more space and power.
If budget is the primary concern, the Mitsubishi Mirage is a similar, though less refined, option. The Nissan Versa Note (hatchback) offers more room and a more comfortable ride.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Chevrolet Spark a Good Hatchback?

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is an ideal choice for budget-conscious individuals seeking an affordable and fuel-efficient city car.
It's particularly well-suited for urban dwellers who prioritize easy parking and maneuverability.
Whether it's worth buying depends on your needs. If you require significant passenger or cargo space, it's not the best option.
Buying used offers the best value, as depreciation is significant. The 1LT trim strikes a good balance between features and price. Before purchasing, thoroughly inspect the CVT transmission and ensure all recalls have been addressed. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

A modest car that offers good value

This is a fuel efficient and modest car. It achieves 98hp has a 9 gallon tank and an automatic transmission. The LS has crank windows and old fashioned key-lock doors. You can haul a reasonable load in the back seat and hatch or even three other people, though it might be somewhat cramped. It appears to be designed for urban commuters, but I've driven it some decent distances and in all seasons now and it seems to up the challenge of all weather and (paved) terrains. The onboard technology (radio, backup camera, and internet connectivity--with Apple Play and Android Auto) is surprisingly good. Its small size makes it fit easily into small spaces. It was discontinued in 2022, so there should be parts for awhile and prices are coming down. If you need a second car, give this one some consideration.

Inexpensive Transportation That Beats a Bike LOL

Bought a 2017 Spark to be a tow car for our RV. At 2200lb, the car is lightweight, and it hardly ever feels like we're towing anything at all even in the mountains. While it is not an off-road vehicle, it is still great for "extra vehicular" transportation once we're at a campsite. Almost 40MPG (39.6) means fewer trips for gas. It would be cramped for four people, but it holds two people just fine in front. When being towed, and with the back seats stowed, the car has room for lots of gear - a benefit of being such a lightweight car is that we can offload the heavier gear to the Spark. Its small size means it's easy to maneuver and park. Many time we've been able to park in spaces that a bigger car would not have fit into. Apple Car Play makes things nice for longer rides.

Fun and Reliable

The car has been funner to drive than I expected, maybe because it is a manual. I am getting 44.4 MPG about 70% of which is Highway. I am approaching 100K miles and am about to change the radiator hoses and the plastic connections for them (not just Chevy, many engines have these now, and when they fail, they disintegrate and send plastic pieces all over, so this is just a precaution). I have not needed any repairs done so far. It is more comfortable that I expected, but I am 5'9 and I do not think people much larger would fit in it.

Not sure about the CVT/highway driving

I was really considering a used spark because I think they are cute and a great price. Once I went on the highway though I just was not sure about the driving. It feels really small and the engine sounded and felt weird to me. Not sure if it is the CVT or what. It is probably an ok car but just wasn’t for me.
