The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is the latest iteration of Honda's legendary high-performance hatchback. Building on the Civic's heritage, the Type R is a front-wheel-drive vehicle available exclusively as a hatchback. The current generation (FL5) launched in 2023. There's only one trim, the Type R. Pricing starts around $43,000. Its potent turbocharged engine, track-tuned suspension, and aggressive styling make it a standout among performance enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2023 Civic Type R boasts exhilarating performance and renowned Honda reliability. It offers surprising comfort for a track-focused car, coupled with a distinctive, aggressive design. While not the most efficient, it's reasonably economical for its power. The Type R delivers incredible value, appealing to both those seeking thrills and those prioritizing dependable performance.

The Bad

The 2023 Civic Type R's weaknesses include potential for high tire wear due to its aggressive handling. Availability can be limited, leading to dealer markups. The firm ride, while contributing to performance, might be uncomfortable for some daily driving. Some may find the styling too aggressive.

What Problems Does the 2023 Honda Civic Type R Have?

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R, being a relatively new model, doesn't have a long history of frequently reported problems yet. However, some initial concerns and potential issues to watch out for include premature tire wear due to its aggressive suspension and driving style. Some owners have reported higher-than-expected oil consumption, which should be monitored closely. Dealer markups and limited availability have been a more common complaint than mechanical issues. Recalls, while not prevalent at this time, should be monitored through the NHTSA website using the VIN. Long-term reliability is generally expected to be good, given Honda's reputation. However, the high-performance nature of the engine and other components means that diligent maintenance is crucial. Potential future concerns could revolve around the adaptive dampers, brake wear, and the longevity of the turbocharger system. Because the vehicle is new, the frequency and severity of these potential issues are still being determined. Checking online forums and owner reviews regularly can provide updated information about common issues that emerge over time. It is always recommended to perform routine maintenance per Honda's schedule.

How long will the 2023 Honda Civic Type R last?

Based on Honda's reputation for reliability, and with diligent maintenance, the 2023 Civic Type R should easily achieve 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brake pads and tires, and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule are crucial. Potential long-term weaknesses might include the adaptive dampers needing replacement, increased susceptibility to wear in high-stress components like the turbocharger system, and potential for corrosion in areas exposed to harsh weather conditions. Properly caring for the car should yield many years of enjoyable driving. Early indications suggest solid long-term durability.

WEBSITE PRICE IS WRONG! ADD $15,000 to this price!! Unbelievable that someone else also wrote a review like this back in May and it's now September!! We called FERNANDEZ HONDA IN SAN ANTONIO to inquire about this car before we saw that previous review. Now we have two vehicles to trade in/sell plus we need to buy two new vehicles but we will have to go somewhere else darnit.

2023 Honda Civic Type R Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R had a starting MSRP of around $43,000 when new. Due to high demand and limited production, actual transaction prices, especially initially, were often higher than MSRP due to dealer markups. As of late 2024, used market prices remain relatively high, often close to or even above the original MSRP, depending on mileage, condition, and location.

Depreciation is expected to be slow for the Type R due to its desirability and limited availability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and modifications. Well-maintained, unmodified examples tend to command the highest prices. The Type R's strong brand reputation and performance credentials contribute to its excellent resale value.

2023 Honda Civic Type R Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are likely higher than a standard Civic due to its performance nature. Fuel costs are moderate, with a combined EPA rating of 24 mpg, but spirited driving will reduce that. Maintenance costs are average for a performance car, but premium tires and brake components will add up. Repairs could be expensive due to specialized parts and labor. Overall, while not excessively expensive, the Type R's ownership costs are higher than a standard economy car.

2023 Honda Civic Type R Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 Honda Civic Type R is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Honda Civic Type R Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R competes with other high-performance hatchbacks like the Hyundai Elantra N, Volkswagen Golf R, and Toyota GR Corolla. In terms of performance, the Type R offers a compelling blend of power and handling, often considered the benchmark in its class. Feature-wise, it is well-equipped, though some rivals might offer slightly more tech for the price.

Reliability is a Honda strong suit, giving the Type R an edge over some competitors. Price-wise, it sits in the middle of the pack, potentially higher than the Elantra N but lower than a similarly equipped Golf R after markups are considered.

Alternatives to consider include the Hyundai Elantra N, which offers similar performance at a lower price point, though may not be as refined. The Volkswagen Golf R provides a more luxurious experience with all-wheel drive, but at a higher cost. The Toyota GR Corolla is a strong contender with its unique all-wheel-drive system. Ultimately, the Type R's combination of performance, reliability, and brand reputation makes it a top choice for many, but individual preferences and priorities will determine the best option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Honda Civic Type R a Good Sedan?

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking a high-performance, engaging, and relatively reliable hot hatchback. It's worth buying if you value track-day performance and everyday usability. Whether it's worth buying new depends on market conditions and dealer markups. If markups are excessive, a slightly used model (with low mileage and no accidents) might be a better value, though availability is a factor. Since there is only one trim, the decision is straightforward. Those prioritizing comfort above all else or seeking a purely economical daily driver might find other options more suitable. However, for the performance-minded, the Type R delivers an exceptional driving experience.

as good as caymans!!

1st of all you are giving a car that is beating lamborgin/porsche caymans/bmws best and more 3 stars?? "haha" Take it to a track and you will see why Honda is going to make elite cars think about pricing! I own a 2022 porsche 911 turbo s, and i have owned many bmw audi and ferrari. I have raced rally for years and this type R even at 60k smokes the competition. Mind blown how it holds the corners and zips right back up with the top porsche cayman gt3 gt4. Just a joy to drive!
