What Problems Does the 2022 Chevrolet Spark Have?

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark generally enjoys good reliability, but some owners have reported issues.
Frequently reported problems include:
  • Transmission issues, particularly with the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Some owners have experienced slipping or hesitation.
  • Air conditioning problems. Some individuals have reported issues with the A/C not blowing cold air.
  • Electrical issues with the infotainment system, causing it to freeze or malfunction.
Recalls for the 2022 model year are not widespread, but it's always best to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for the most up-to-date information. Long-term reliability concerns are typical for subcompact cars. The Spark's small engine and CVT transmission may require more frequent maintenance compared to larger vehicles. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and transmission fluid checks, is crucial to prolonging its lifespan. Some earlier model years of the Spark (pre-2017) had reported timing chain issues, but this seems to be less prevalent in the 2022 model.

How long will the 2022 Chevrolet Spark last?

With proper maintenance, the 2022 Chevrolet Spark can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service or last 10-13 years. Key to longevity is adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, especially regarding oil changes and transmission fluid servicing. Weaknesses over time often relate to wear and tear on the smaller engine and CVT. Suspension components might also require attention as the vehicle ages. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of this subcompact.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark offers a decent suite of built-in tech and safety features for its price point.
Tech and Entertainment:
  • Standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
  • Two USB ports.
  • Available Wi-Fi hotspot.
Driver-Assistance Features:
  • Standard Rearview Camera.
  • Available Rear Park Assist (on higher trims).
Safety Features:
  • 10 airbags.
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.
  • Available Automatic Emergency Braking (on higher trims).
  • Available Lane Departure Warning (on higher trims).
Crash-Test Ratings:
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings can vary. It’s advisable to check their websites for the specific 2022 model year ratings. Generally, the Spark performs adequately in crash tests for its class, but its small size inherently limits its crashworthiness compared to larger vehicles. The availability of advanced safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking helps to improve safety outcomes.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark had a starting MSRP of around $14,000-$18,000 when new, depending on the trim. Current used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $16,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is relatively moderate, as the Spark's low initial price limits how much it can depreciate. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of optional features. Well-maintained Sparks with lower mileage tend to hold their value better.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is generally very economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its value and safety record. Excellent fuel economy significantly reduces fuel costs. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available parts and straightforward repairs. While occasional CVT transmission or air conditioning issues might arise, overall long-term ownership costs are among the lowest in its class, making it a budget-friendly choice.

How Does the 2022 Chevrolet Spark Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark competes with the Mitsubishi Mirage, Kia Rio, and Nissan Versa in the subcompact segment. In terms of price, the Spark is generally one of the most affordable. Performance is similar to the Mirage but less powerful than the Rio or Versa. Features are basic but adequate for its class, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Reliability is comparable to the Kia Rio but potentially better than the Mitsubishi Mirage. The Nissan Versa offers more passenger space and a more refined driving experience.
Alternatives to the 2022 Chevrolet Spark:
  • Kia Rio: Offers a bit more space and better performance.
  • Nissan Versa: Provides more rear seat room and a more comfortable ride, although at a slightly higher price.
  • Hyundai Accent: Similar to the Rio in terms of features and value.
If maximum fuel economy and the lowest possible price are paramount, the Spark is a good choice. However, if more space, power, or advanced features are needed, consider the Kia Rio or Nissan Versa.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Chevrolet Spark a Good Vehicle?

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is ideal for first-time car buyers, city dwellers, and anyone seeking affordable and efficient transportation. It's a worthwhile purchase if budget is a top priority and you primarily need a car for short commutes and errands. Buying used can offer even greater value, but carefully inspect the CVT transmission for any signs of problems. The 1LT trim offers a good balance of features and affordability. Consider alternatives if you require more passenger space or highway performance.

Keep in mind this rating is for a small gas fuel

Keep in mind this rating is for a small gas fuel efficient economy car, it's way more than expected and for 2 years has not diminished my opinion at all. Good reliable car. Here in New England I have seen models from 2013 and newer still driven all over and even the prior avio models on the road too. BSic maintenance keeps them together. It is a good car!

The key to the cvt transmission is to change transmission

The key to the cvt transmission is to change transmission fluid and filter every 30,000. Great commuter car . Driving 60 mph and under I usually get between 37 and 42 miles per gallon. Driving over 60 mph it will range between 33 and 36 mpg . It is small but it's fun to drive .
