The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact car that gained popularity for its sporty styling and affordability. Part of the CG generation (2002-2007), it's offered as a sedan. Key trims included the ES, LS, O-Z Rally, and Ralliart. New, it ranged approximately from $13,000 to $19,000. The Lancer stood out for its rally-inspired design cues and available performance-oriented trims like the Ralliart.
The Good

The 2005 Lancer offers a sporty design appealing to emotional buyers. Its reliable engine and good fuel efficiency attract practical buyers. Performance, especially in Ralliart trim, provides a fun driving experience. Its affordability and decent comfort for its class further enhance its value proposition. Its simple mechanics contribute to ease of maintenance.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2005 Lancer include its relatively basic interior and potential for rust, especially in colder climates. Some owners reported issues with the automatic transmission and electrical components. The O-Z Rally edition might have been driven hard; inspect for signs of abuse. What Problems Does the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer include rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or slipping. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows and door locks, are also common. Some owners have mentioned problems with the air conditioning system.

Recalls for the 2005 Lancer are relatively limited but should be checked using the VIN to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed, especially concerning safety-related components. Long-term reliability concerns center around the timing belt; it's crucial to ensure it's replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations (typically every 60,000 miles) to prevent engine damage. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and rear main seal are also potential issues. The Ralliart trim, with its more powerful engine and sportier suspension, may experience increased wear and tear on components like brakes and suspension bushings. Premature failure of oxygen sensors has also been reported.

How long will the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer last?

With good maintenance, a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many examples are still on the road after 15+ years. Regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), timely timing belt replacement, and addressing issues promptly are crucial. Weaknesses over time include rust, especially in the undercarriage and wheel wells. Suspension components (struts, bushings) will likely need replacement. Automatic transmissions can become problematic if not properly maintained. The key to longevity is diligent preventative maintenance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer offers relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. The standard entertainment system typically includes an AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims may offer an upgraded audio system with more speakers. There are no advanced driver-assistance features available.

Standard safety features include front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional on some trims. Side airbags were not widely available. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS vary. The NHTSA generally gave the Lancer 4-5 stars for frontal crash protection, but side-impact ratings were lower. The IIHS results should be reviewed specifically for the 2005 model year, but generally the Lancer performed moderately well in their offset frontal crash test. Overall, it lacks modern safety technologies like stability control or traction control on all trims. Given the age of the vehicle, it's important to prioritize regular maintenance and tire condition to ensure basic safety systems function optimally. No built-in navigation or smartphone integration is present.

2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer ranged from approximately $13,000 to $19,000 depending on the trim level. Currently, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Lancer has depreciated significantly over time, as expected for a vehicle of its age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, maintenance history, and trim level (Ralliart models tend to hold their value better). Low mileage examples in excellent condition are rare but can fetch higher prices from enthusiasts.

2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Maintenance and repair costs are relatively affordable, especially if you can perform basic tasks yourself. However, unexpected repairs due to age and wear and tear can occur. Rust repair can be costly. Overall, it presents an affordable entry point into car ownership, but budgeting for potential repairs is wise. Long-term, diligent maintenance will help keep costs down.

How Does the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer competed against rivals like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Ford Focus. In terms of performance, the Lancer Ralliart offered a more sporty experience than the base Civic or Corolla, but the Mazda3 provided a better balance of handling and comfort. Feature-wise, the Lancer was generally less equipped than the Civic or Corolla, especially in base trims. Reliability is comparable to the Focus but arguably less consistent than the Civic or Corolla. Price-wise, the Lancer was typically more affordable than the Civic and Corolla when new.

Alternatives to consider include the Mazda3 for its superior handling, the Honda Civic for its reliability and fuel efficiency, and the Toyota Corolla for its longevity. The Ford Focus offers a similar driving experience to the Lancer but may have reliability concerns. For someone prioritizing sporty styling and affordability, the Lancer can be a viable option, especially the Ralliart. However, for long-term reliability and lower overall ownership costs, the Civic or Corolla are generally better choices. The Mazda3 offers a compelling blend of sportiness and practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer a Good Sedan?

The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a sporty-looking and affordable compact car. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a clean title and minimal rust. The Ralliart trim offers a more engaging driving experience but requires careful inspection. Consider it if you're comfortable with potential repairs and are willing to perform preventative maintenance. Alternatives like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla offer greater long-term reliability, but the Lancer can be a decent choice if you prioritize styling and a lower initial price, provided you accept the potential for higher maintenance costs as the car ages. Don't overpay. Get a pre-purchase inspection.

Best daily driver I’ve ever relied on.

The vehicle is fantastic for all drivers. Whether they’re new on the road or just like a simple stylish little car to commute with. It’s comfortable, smooth, reliable, and fun, and cheap.

This was my first car and I LOVED it.

I really loved this car. It's a 2005 but feels newer. It is super easy to drive and comfortable. It was my first car and I loved it. I bought it for $3500 with over 140,000 miles which was a steal for a car this nice. It had no signs of wear and tear at all. Highly recommend this car if you can get your hands on one! I miss mine so much.

A far better car than I'd hoped for

In 2012, I had a Ford Ranger pickup that was adequate but uncomfortable to drive, so I traded it in on a 2005 Lancer O-Z Rally automatic. It had nearly 160,000 miles and I wasn't familiar with Mitsubishi's car lines so it was a roll of the dice at the time. Five years and 55,000 miles later, I have nothing but good things to say about this car. It's an attractive ride, a white 4DR yet rather sporty-looking with a spoiler in back...one of the easier-on-the-eyes cars I've had. Nothing really stands out but it looks good. The interior is pretty roomy, especially the legroom up front. I'm 5'9" so don't need a lot but there's more than enough. Have been told there's decent room in the rear seats. Front seat is comfy and easy to adjust. The steering wheel can also be adjusted so your positioning while driving is not a problem. Stock stereo isn't super, but speakers seem to handle about 30-40 watts apiece and are more than adequate. While it isn't huge and doesn't open into the back seat area, the trunk is fine and holds a fair amount of luggage, et al. The engine is a 2.0-liter 4-banger running on 120 hp. It doesn't roar (although it can get a little noisy like many 4-cylinder engines), but has more power than you'd think. Just to see how fast it goes shortly after I bought it, I hit 108 mph before backing off but it felt like I could've taken it higher (note to police: I haven't done it since). It can take hills pretty easily as well. I often use cruise control and it works well. The MPG is so-so; I generally get 31 per gallon on the highway, 26ish in town. The thing that stands out for me is that in the five years I've had it, there has NEVER been a problem with this car. Oil change every 5K miles, a periodic tuneup and an A/C charge (the A/C works well, BTW), and that's pretty much it. All in all, since I didn't really know what to expect, this is easily one of the best cars I've ever owned for many reasons. I've considered trading it in on a 3/4-ton or 1/2-ton long bed pickup to put a camper on, but I'm holding off because it makes so little sense to get rid of a car that's been a better vehicle in almost every way than I'd hoped for when buying it. Why let go of that?

Best 10 years with this car

I had the Lancer Oz Rally version and it was fantastic. It was bright Yellow with dark tint and black wheels. I owned the car for 10 years and over 100k miles, with no major repair to it. I add several modes to the Lancer and they were easy to install with great output. Drove this car cross country and in ever condition and it still held up great. Also being 6'3 in that small car, still had leg room for the driver. Got enough room in the back seat of the car if you and someone else wanted to have fun back there lol.

Most Reliable Car I've ever Owned

Let me tell you a quick story. I've had the pleasure of owning this car for many, many years. Not only can she conquer any terrain with ease (the mountains of Pennsylvania, the arctic tundra that is Illinois, the dessert that is Florida, etc) but she also does it with both style and comfort. I have never had any problems with this vehicle, she is built to last--better than a Toyota even. If you take good care of her she'll take good care of you. This car can even exceed 200,000 miles, trust me I know. This car has been through many potholes, black ice situations, storm like situations and she overcomes all. If you want a champion, a reliable steed, then look no further--this is your car.

GREAT CAR, awesome buy...go get it.

I currently own this same car "in lightening yellow. I bought mine 2 years ago. Still haven't had any problems with it. "Reason why there aren't may for sale? because people are still getting their moneys worth out of them. I get great gas millage (up to 40 interstate) and last i filled up it cost me a whole $21. I love that. I drive this car everywhere, threw the mountains (takes curves well and has awesome control going up and down steep hills) and threw the busy city (which millage drops to about 35 MPG) GREAT factory speakers. I had the automatic and i hardly hear the engine except in the cold mornings when it has to warm up. I work and go to classes day and night. Im a college student. Having a compact car that's reliable like this has been wonderful for me. Every day i have to parallel park at least two times. The only down fall for me was that taking long trips in the car could get uncomfortable if i was driving over 2 hours or more. WORD of advice. Once you do buy one, careful because even with a 4cylinder, its hard to tell how fast your driving that little beast. So quiet and so smooth.I'm surprised i've never gotten a ticket. its a complement pleaser too..

ES Sport Style-N-Profile

Great Car for the value. Comfort zone is a plus for my never ending painful back. Plenty of room for the lady and our 2 teen boys. Plastic looks a little on the cheap side but the plastic is strong and never broke from our boys abuse. The engine is a little louder than the normal 4 cylinder cars, but it is not a big issue with a 5 speed manual. Handles better than the Mazda 3 and Civic SI... Interior style is different from the rest in the mid level car. Give this car a try. I Love it and I am glad I bought this rather than the civic or the Mazda 3.
