The 2004 Mazda Tribute is a compact SUV that emerged from a collaboration with Ford. It shares a platform with the Ford Escape. Available as a 5-door SUV, the Tribute was offered from 2001-2011. Key trims included DX, LX, and ES. Its popularity stemmed from its sporty handling, a trait associated with Mazda, combined with SUV practicality. Original pricing ranged from around $19,000 to $25,000, but used models are significantly less.
The Good

The 2004 Mazda Tribute offers a blend of practicality and driving enjoyment. Its responsive handling appeals to emotional buyers, while its SUV versatility and relatively affordable price attract practical ones. While not the most luxurious, it provided adequate comfort and decent reliability for its time. The design, while dated now, was generally well-received.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 Mazda Tribute include rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Transmission issues, especially in higher-mileage vehicles, are also a concern. The interior materials can feel cheap. Check for leaks and ensure proper maintenance records exist before purchasing to avoid costly repairs.

What Problems Does the 2004 Mazda Tribute Have?

The 2004 Mazda Tribute, like its Ford Escape counterpart, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is transmission failure, particularly in the automatic versions. This can manifest as slipping gears or complete failure. Rust is another significant concern, especially in areas that use road salt during winter. Underbody components and body panels are susceptible. Catalytic converter failure is also relatively common, leading to emissions problems.
Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors and faulty window regulators, have been reported as well. Engine oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets, are something to watch for. Recalls for the 2004 Tribute have included issues related to the fuel tank and potential fire hazards. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if not properly addressed with timely maintenance and repairs. The earlier model years (2001-2004) seem to have a higher incidence of transmission problems compared to later years. Regular fluid changes and inspections are critical to mitigate potential issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2004 Mazda Tribute last?

A 2004 Mazda Tribute, given average maintenance, could reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. However, this heavily depends on consistent upkeep, including regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing issues promptly. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses impacting long-term durability include rust, potential transmission problems, and degradation of rubber components like hoses and seals. Proper rustproofing measures and proactive repairs are crucial for longevity. Many examples are still on the road, but their condition varies widely based on previous owner care.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Mazda Tribute's built-in tech was relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded sound system or a cassette player. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.
Safety features included standard front airbags, and some models may have had optional side airbags. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) was available, but not always standard, particularly on the base DX trim. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not offered.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show a mixed bag. While some tests yielded decent results, others showed potential weaknesses in frontal impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings also reflected similar concerns regarding frontal crash performance. It's important to remember that safety technology has significantly advanced since 2004, so this vehicle is not as safe as modern cars. Check specific crash test ratings for the 2004 Mazda Tribute year and body style for detailed information.

2004 Mazda Tribute Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Mazda Tribute ranged from approximately $19,000 for the base DX model to around $25,000 for a fully-equipped ES version. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, or even less for models in poor condition.
The Tribute has depreciated significantly due to its age and higher mileage. Factors affecting resale value include its mechanical condition, rust presence, and overall appearance. A well-maintained example with low mileage and no rust will command a higher price, but overall, resale values are low due to the vehicle's age and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced SUVs.

2004 Mazda Tribute Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Mazda Tribute are relatively low due to its age. Fuel costs can be moderate, depending on the engine (V6 less economical). Maintenance can be affordable if you handle basic tasks, but repairs can become costly, especially for transmission or rust issues. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on its condition; a well-maintained Tribute can be economical, but neglected ones can become expensive. Be prepared for potential repairs common to older vehicles.

2004 Mazda Tribute Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Mazda Tribute is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Mazda Tribute Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2004 Mazda Tribute competed with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape (its platform twin). Performance-wise, the Tribute offered slightly sportier handling than the CR-V and RAV4, but its fuel economy was generally lower. Features were comparable across the segment, though the CR-V and RAV4 were often seen as offering slightly better reliability. Price was a selling point for the Tribute, generally being more affordable than the Honda and Toyota options, both new and used.
The Ford Escape is a very similar alternative, as they share the same platform and many components. However, the Tribute generally had a more "Mazda" feel in terms of steering and suspension. If reliability is a primary concern, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 of the same era would be better choices, although they will likely command a higher price on the used market. If you're looking for a budget-friendly SUV with decent performance and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs, the Tribute can be considered, but carefully inspect its condition before buying. Newer SUVs offer vastly improved safety and fuel efficiency.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Mazda Tribute a Good Wagon?

The 2004 Mazda Tribute is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and reasonably practical SUV. It's worth considering if you need a vehicle for short commutes or errands and are comfortable with potential maintenance. It's only worth buying used, as new models are no longer available. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, preferably V6 models for better performance, and avoid those with excessive rust. Be prepared for potential repairs and factor that into your budget. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential.

Reliable car

I bought a used Mazda Tribute 2004 4wd with 175000 miles for my teen daughter. So far everything is great had it check out its in great shape. There some squeaky sound with the suspension, later will see if we need to replace the shocks. But every thing else is great!.

Good older vehicle

Plenty of room and plenty of power, bought this used, so far so good. I had an 06 Saturn, this one has much more room in it.

bought new 6 cylinder fully loaded.

Gently driven , changed oil every 3 k miles ect, planned to keep. After about 2 years the paint started coming off above the rear window. ,interior door panel covering came loose, radio knob broke ect. What finally did it was the engine started running rough and the ding, ding, ding of a door open would sound for no reason. Took it to the dealer 1800 for a new computer, lasted for awhile then started being possessed again. 1200 more bucks to just get it running enough to sell on e-bay. Wouldn't wish this car on my worse enemy. Buy a Toyota or Honda if you want quality.

Good, short wheelbase ride. Lots of pep.

Great turning radius. Lots of headroom. V6 gives great power and acceleration when you need it. Interior layout, save for where the ignition hides, is good.

Great car, good gas mileage, runs strong.

Fun to drive, dependable 4-wheel drive when you need it, but still gets good gas mileage, lots of room for luggage in back. Roof rack and fog lights two real plusses. My son loves it for college.

225K and still running smooth

I purchased my vehicle new back in 2004 - today it has 225,000 miles on it and still runs like a champ. The A/C and heating unit works really well to this day. In fact I still have never turned the A/C up full blast because it gets so cold. I have never changed a timing belt , had any transmission problems or any pricey repair jobs. I changed the oil/filter faithfully every 4-5 K miles, but other than that just routine repair work. So if your car has 100K miles on it and has been taken care of you should be in good shape for many years to come. I wish they still made the Tribute. It remains one of the more stylish SUV's ever made. Enjoy the ride !!

Best car I've owned

After a Honda (paid more than it cost new for repairs) and 2 Toyotas (reliable, but fell apart after 150K miles), I shopped around and was very happy to purchase a used Tribute (1 year / 11K miles). With a 64 mi round trip daily commute, I have logged 170K miles in 10 years. Until just a month or so ago when the engine light came on signaling a $1300 repair of the ignition system, I have spent less to maintain this car than any other I've owned. It gets 1/3 less mpg than my Toyota Corolla but then it's a SUV and I expected that. Even so, at 22 mpg it gets better mileage than my sister's late-model Hyundai. It has been a great car and I'd happily keep it until it dies a ragged death.

Better than I expected

So far I have only had this vehicle 6 months. I bought it with 92,000 miles. It drives awesome. It has enough get up and go when needed and stops quickly. It does however require the intake manifold to be taken off the replace spark plugs...an expesive ordeal. So far I love it!
