Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Mazda Tribute is a compact SUV, sharing its platform with the Ford Escape. Produced from 2001 to 2011, it offered a more sporty alternative in its class. Key trims included the base model, Sport, and Grand Touring. The 2010 model provided a blend of practicality and Mazda's signature driving dynamics. New pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $28,000. Its popularity stemmed from its affordable price, available V6 engine, and relatively agile handling compared to competitors.
The Good

The 2010 Mazda Tribute offered a decent balance of practicality and fun. Its available V6 provided adequate performance, appealing to those seeking a bit of excitement. It was also relatively reliable and comfortable enough for daily commutes. The Tribute's value proposition was strong, especially for budget-conscious buyers. While not luxurious, it offered a functional and dependable driving experience.

The Bad

The 2010 Mazda Tribute's interior materials can feel cheap compared to some rivals. The four-cylinder engine is underpowered, especially when loaded. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic, have been reported. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's service history and conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2010 Mazda Tribute Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Mazda Tribute include issues with the automatic transmission, particularly rough shifting or complete failure. Owners have also reported problems with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure. Engine misfires and catalytic converter issues are also relatively common. Rust can be a significant concern, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Premature brake wear has also been noted by some owners.

While specific recalls for the 2010 model may exist, it is important to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date information. Some common recalls for this generation of Tribute (which can extend to the 2010 model) related to issues with the fuel tank and potential fuel leaks, as well as problems with the cruise control system. Long-term reliability can be affected by these potential issues, especially if preventative maintenance is not performed regularly. Early symptoms, such as unusual noises or difficulty shifting, should be addressed promptly to prevent more significant and costly repairs. Regular oil changes and transmission fluid flushes are crucial for maintaining the vehicle's longevity.

How long will the 2010 Mazda Tribute last?

A 2010 Mazda Tribute, with consistent maintenance, can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on location and driving conditions, but 12-15 years is achievable. Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential weaknesses like transmission issues and rust prevention. Regular oil changes (every 5,000 miles) and transmission fluid changes (every 30,000 miles) are critical. Neglecting these can lead to premature failure. Rustproofing in colder climates can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. The interior, while functional, may show wear and tear over time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Mazda Tribute's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems. There were no advanced driver-assistance features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and front and side airbags. Optional features included a sunroof and leather upholstery on higher trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the Tribute performed reasonably well in frontal and side-impact crash tests, but ratings varied depending on the testing year and specific criteria. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced considerably since 2010, so newer vehicles will likely offer greater levels of protection. The lack of modern driver-assistance features puts it behind newer vehicles in terms of overall safety.

2010 Mazda Tribute Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Mazda Tribute had a new price range of approximately $20,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Tribute has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, perceived reliability compared to newer models, and the availability of more modern and fuel-efficient alternatives. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has the preferred V6 engine and four-wheel drive. Low mileage and a well-documented service history will command a premium.

2010 Mazda Tribute Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Mazda Tribute is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, but the four-cylinder is more efficient. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to potential repairs like transmission issues and rust. Repairs can be moderately priced if using aftermarket parts. Long-term ownership costs are manageable if preventative maintenance is diligently performed; neglecting this can lead to costly surprises. Overall, it's a relatively affordable vehicle if you're prepared for potential maintenance needs.

2010 Mazda Tribute Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Mazda Tribute is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle MPV with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Mazda Tribute Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2010 Mazda Tribute competed with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape (its platform twin). In terms of performance, the Tribute's available V6 offered decent power, but the CR-V and RAV4 had better reputations for reliability. The Tribute's features were comparable to its rivals, but its interior quality wasn't as high. Price-wise, the Tribute was often more affordable, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which offer superior reliability and resale value, albeit at a higher price point. The Subaru Forester provides standard all-wheel drive and a more rugged appeal. The Ford Escape, being mechanically similar, is a reasonable alternative if you find one in better condition or at a lower price. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget constraints. If reliability is paramount, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices. If affordability is key, the Tribute or Escape might be suitable, provided they pass a thorough inspection.

Ranks #418 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Mazda Tribute a Good Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2010 Mazda Tribute is ideal for budget-minded buyers seeking a practical and affordable compact SUV. It's worth buying *used* if it has been well-maintained and passes a thorough inspection. A V6 model is preferable for better performance. The Grand Touring trim offers more features, but the Sport trim provides a good balance of value and equipment. Be prepared for potential maintenance costs associated with its age and known issues like transmission problems. It's a decent option if you understand its limitations and are willing to prioritize affordability over long-term reliability compared to alternatives like the CR-V or RAV4.

It's 2024 & I still own my Fabulous 2010 Mazda Tribute,

It's 2024 & I still own my Fabulous 2010 Mazda Tribute, only 109,000 miles, learned many years ago keep the oil changed & a vehicle will last forever. I wish Mazda would have kept it in their lineup. If you come across one, grab it, if taken care of like mine. Went yesterday to see Mazda's 2024 SUV's & prices, OMG I was asked if I would be trading mine in? I said no way, it's been to good to me & after seeing what's out there( plastic) & the price, only brings we more pleasure with my 2010 Mazda Tribute, I already have the best SUV with an easy 200,000 + miles to drive . I'm so happy that I'm not a High Maintenance Woman just like my 2010, not too many more years & we both will be Classics !!

Best car we've had

Our 2010 Tribute was a great car! This is the first car we have driven over 100,000 miles!! Even though this car is not made anymore, we decided to stick with Mazda for the quality and dependable care.

Thought it would be as good as the Ford

Bought new in 2010. Was much less than the Ford Escape and I thought it was the "same" vehicle. Transmission had to be replaced within the first year. The dealer service department has overfilled the transmission on service and has put the drain fill plug back on so tight I had to take it back in just to have them remove it. (I like changing my own oil) The 4 cylinder is rough, especially on acceleration and is noisy. On long trips my back hurts after driving for 4 hours and I don't have back problems. My F150 can be driven for 8 hours no problem. The tires do not hold air and this has been the case for both sets I have had on it. I think the wheels are not true and do not seal properly. The ride is not particularly comfortable and it tends to be "uneasy" at highway speeds, even though I have had tires and alignment checked. I have never gotten anywhere close to 28 mpg on the highway and my best was 22. City is about 20. I was curious and went and test drove a used 2008 Mercury Mariner and it was like night and day. The Mercury still felt solid and quiet. It hasn't been an overall bad vehicle, but I wouldn't buy another one.

First encounter with a Mazda

Main incentive to purchase vehicle was price, especially for a Mazda, never owned or even driven a Mazda, but I have heard many good things about Mazdas over the years. The vehicle does have some good points, such as,great fuel economy, roomy inside, cargo area good size, base model included keyless entry,anti-theft system built in,cruise control, handling not bad.Complaint wise, not too many, stereo system could be better, one other major complaint, acceleration when already moving especially on the highway where you need it to pass other vehicles.Overall rating good purchase for the price would recommend to other interested in this type of vehicle.

Great SUV for the price

I recently purchased a 2010 Mazda Tribute I Sport, so far is everything we wanted. Got it at a great end of the year closeout price, well under the invoice which was what I wanted. I recommend this vehicle to everyone.
