What Problems Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class often revolve around its complex systems. The air suspension (Airmatic) is a common source of issues, with components like air struts and the compressor prone to failure, leading to expensive repairs. Electrical problems, particularly with the COMAND infotainment system, are also frequently reported, including issues with the navigation, audio, and display screens. Oil leaks, especially from the engine and transmission, can be a concern as the car ages. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission shifting, particularly in the earlier model years of this generation (2007-2010).

Recalls for the 2013 CL-Class were generally related to safety issues, such as potential problems with the fuel system or airbags. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchase. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle and the cost of parts and labor. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for mitigating these concerns. The AMG models, while offering superior performance, tend to have even higher maintenance costs due to their more powerful engines and performance-oriented components. Specific model year issues should be researched thoroughly before considering a purchase.

How long will the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class last?

A well-maintained 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class can realistically achieve 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on meticulous maintenance. Neglecting scheduled service intervals or deferring repairs significantly shortens its lifespan. Long-term durability is affected by the air suspension system, which is prone to failure. Electrical components and the COMAND system can also exhibit issues over time. Preventative maintenance, including regular fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. The quality of replacement parts used also plays a significant role.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class boasts a comprehensive suite of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes the COMAND infotainment system with a central display, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium sound system. Entertainment features encompass a CD player, satellite radio, and auxiliary input. Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors. Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control.

Optional features could include a night vision assist system, upgraded sound systems (e.g., Bang & Olufsen), and the AMG Performance Package (for AMG models) which enhanced engine output and handling. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS may be limited due to the CL-Class's low production volume, but Mercedes-Benz vehicles generally adhere to high safety standards. The adaptive cruise control maintains a safe distance from vehicles ahead, while blind-spot monitoring alerts the driver to vehicles in their blind spots. The lane-keeping assist helps to prevent unintentional lane departures. The CL-Class prioritizes both occupant and pedestrian safety through its advanced systems.

2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class ranged from approximately $115,000 for the CL550 to over $220,000 for the CL65 AMG. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim, ranging from $20,000 to $50,000+. The CL-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to high maintenance costs and the availability of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, service history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. AMG models generally retain more value due to their higher performance and exclusivity.

2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are high due to the vehicle's value and performance. Fuel economy is poor, especially in AMG models. Maintenance and repair costs are significant, with specialized parts and labor driving up expenses. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial due to the potential for air suspension, electrical, and engine-related repairs. This vehicle is far from economical and is best suited for owners who can afford its upkeep.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class competed with luxury coupes such as the BMW 6 Series, Audi A7 (though a hatchback), and Bentley Continental GT. In terms of performance, the AMG variants of the CL-Class were highly competitive, rivaling the Bentley and surpassing the BMW. The CL-Class offered a similar level of luxury and features as its rivals, but its reliability was generally considered lower than the BMW. Price-wise, the CL-Class was positioned at the higher end of the spectrum.

Alternatives to the CL-Class include: The BMW 6 Series (better reliability, similar performance), Bentley Continental GT (significantly higher price, superior luxury and exclusivity), and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe (similar features and luxury, potentially more reliable). If reliability is a primary concern, the BMW 6 Series might be a better alternative. If ultimate luxury and exclusivity are desired and budget is not a constraint, the Bentley Continental GT is a compelling choice. For a similar Mercedes experience with potentially better reliability, the S-Class Coupe is worth considering. The Audi S7/RS7 offers similar performance and features, but is a hatchback.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and powerful grand touring coupe with distinctive styling and advanced technology. It's worth buying *used* if you're comfortable with potentially high maintenance costs and have the resources for necessary repairs. It's best suited for enthusiasts who appreciate its performance and are willing to invest in its upkeep. Consider a well-maintained CL550 or CL63 AMG if you prioritize performance. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic. Be prepared for potential expenses associated with its complex systems.

First Benz probably not the last

Coming from my 5th Lexus (2 LS 430s, an LS600, GS350, and LS460) this CL-550 is the best looking inside and out. I got a great deal buying the car off a lease and so far so good with the reliability factor. Performance wise I have no complaints. Throttle tip-in is slow (easy to drive without any unexpected movement) and with 500+ft/lbs of torque the car is very quick. It turns much easier than the Lexus (turns with a pinky) and feels more agile (tires are on rails), so it inspires confidence when driving. Overall it's a great car and makes me smile just knowing I'll drive it a couple times a day going back and forth to work.
