The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer is a mid-size SUV, part of the first generation produced from 2002 to 2009. It's a body-on-frame SUV offering ruggedness and towing capability. Key trims included the base model, LS, LT, and SS. The 2006 Trailblazer was popular for its blend of truck-like utility and relatively comfortable ride, appealing to those needing a capable family vehicle. Pricing ranged approximately from $28,000 to $35,000 when new.
The Good

The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer offers a powerful engine for confident acceleration and towing (performance), a comfortable ride for daily commutes (comfort), and a classic SUV design that many find appealing (design). For practical buyers, it provides decent value for its capabilities and reasonable reliability for its age. Emotionally, some buyers appreciate its truck-like feel and association with adventure.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer include potential issues with the 4L60E transmission, particularly with age and high mileage. Also, the fuel economy is not impressive compared to newer SUVs. The interior materials can feel somewhat dated and prone to wear. Rust can also be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer often revolve around the 4L60E automatic transmission. Slippage, hard shifting, and complete failure are common concerns, especially as mileage increases. The instrument cluster can also exhibit issues, such as malfunctioning gauges. Other frequently reported problems include: the HVAC blower motor resistor failing, leading to limited or no blower fan operation; the fuel level sensor failing causing inaccurate fuel readings; and the intermediate steering shaft causing a clunking noise.
Recalls for the 2006 Trailblazer have included issues related to the electronic throttle control (ETC) module and the fuel tank.
Long-term reliability concerns include rust, particularly in regions with road salt, and the aforementioned transmission issues. The early model years (2002-2005) tended to have more frequent reports of these problems, but the 2006 model is still susceptible, especially if regular maintenance has been neglected. It's crucial to check the vehicle history for any past recalls or major repairs.

How long will the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer last?

A well-maintained 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. With average driving habits (12,000-15,000 miles per year) and diligent maintenance, this translates to a potential lifespan of 15-20 years. However, neglecting regular oil changes, transmission services, and cooling system flushes will significantly shorten its lifespan.
Long-term durability weaknesses include rust, suspension component wear (ball joints, bushings), and the aforementioned transmission and electrical issues. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing longevity.

I drove my parents trailblazer for 2 years covering approx. 300 miles a week going to tech school with 160,000 miles on the vehicle already. I put on about 30,000 miles in total. This vehicle had the original spark plugs and boots in it and started giving me issues at about 186,000 miles. It NEVER stranded me. That on it's own, makes it an amazing vehicle. The only other parts I had to get replaced was a transmission line that rusted out, idle pulley belt, brakes/calipers, and the spark plugs and boots. Highly recommend this beast of a suv.

Thee worst lemon I ever had the mispleger of getting talk to into buying by a sales man who could sell water to a drowning man.. Inline engine ..problems Throttel body problems Power box problems Fuel pressure regulator. Over heat problems becuase of faulty Raidiator fans. Transmission problems.. Has to relearn to relearn how to relearn in other word has to be rest every time you change somthing due to the fact you have to disconnect the battery every time you change somthing...

My husband drove this car 2 hours a day for many years. It is average in creature comforts and is reliable. However we have had a service engine soon light on for 2-3 years. It says cylinder 6 misfire. We tried everything to fix it, and were told we would need an overhaul or new motor, which most likely would be more than the car is worth. We have been driving it with the light on, and other than a slight miss, it has never let us down.
Work
I'm trading my Trailblazer in for 2 reasons. The rear seating is way too small. It's at the point that I'm embarrassed for anyone to ride in my backseat because I know there isn't enough room and I always hear comments about it. Also the gas mileage is poor. If I leave the house and run several errands in town the gas would be quite visibly lower and if I went to a neighboring city in my metro area it would burn 1/2 a tank of gas. As far as being a reliable and comfortable driving vehicle I give it a thumbs up.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer features relatively basic technology for its time. Standard entertainment includes an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might offer features like a Bose premium sound system and rear-seat DVD entertainment.
Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles. It offered standard antilock brakes (ABS) and optional traction control.
Safety features include front airbags and side-impact airbags as an option. Stability control was not standard on all trims.
Optional features included OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and navigation services.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2006 Trailblazer are mixed, with some tests showing good protection for front occupants but lower scores in side-impact tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should also be consulted for a comprehensive assessment.

2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer ranged from approximately $28,000 to $35,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, varying based on condition, mileage, and location.
The Trailblazer has depreciated significantly due to its age and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition (rust-free is preferable), mileage (lower is better), maintenance history (documented services increase value), and trim level (SS models command a higher price).

2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer are relatively moderate due to its age and value. Fuel costs can be high given its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high, especially if major repairs like transmission work are needed.
Long-term ownership costs are generally considered higher than more modern, fuel-efficient SUVs due to potential repairs and fuel consumption. It's not the most economical vehicle to own, especially if preventative maintenance has been neglected.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer competed with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of performance, the Trailblazer's V8 option was competitive, but the inline-6 was less refined than some rivals' offerings. Feature-wise, it lagged behind some competitors, especially in tech and interior quality.
Reliability is where the Trailblazer often falls short compared to the Toyota 4Runner, which is known for its longevity. The Ford Explorer had its own reliability concerns, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee offered a more luxurious interior. In terms of price, the Trailblazer was often positioned competitively when new, but used prices reflect its depreciation and reliability concerns.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner for superior reliability, or a newer, used Ford Explorer for improved fuel economy and features. A used Jeep Grand Cherokee may offer a more luxurious experience, though reliability should be carefully considered. The Nissan Pathfinder is another similar alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer is ideal for someone seeking a capable, affordable SUV with truck-like qualities and isn't overly concerned about fuel economy. It's worth buying only if it's been well-maintained and priced accordingly, reflecting its age and potential repair needs.
A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Look for models with detailed service records and avoid those with obvious signs of neglect or rust. The LT trim offers a decent balance of features. Considering a used model is the only viable option due to its age. Be prepared for potential maintenance costs and factor that into your purchase decision.

Been great until recently

I love the trailblazer but the issues that have come up and the research I've done I'm surprised how many people own. The first 6yrs of owning it was outstanding. Now I feel like it's a money pit. It get regular maintenance on oil changes and tires when needed. Check engine light has been on for 4 yrs. We have checked and changed what the code says and reset it but still on. I've lost my lights while driving the heater works sometimes. Changed and fixed what it was and still acts as if there's electrical problems. Battery gauge fluctuates and my lights also. Just installed new alternator. That's the 2nd one in a year lights and heater still fluctuate.

This vehicle is nicer quieter and smoother riding then my Cadillac lemon ever was. It's roomy enough for my three babies, I can leave the seats up or down in the back, power windows for the far back windows, overall pure comfort, extremely plush leather seats and an extremely smooth ride!!!! Great Deal!!!
