The 2000 Dodge Stratus, part of the second generation introduced in 1995, offered a blend of style and affordability. Available as a sedan and coupe, it aimed to appeal to a broad audience. Key trims included the base, SE, and ES. New, the price range was roughly $14,000 to $20,000. Its sporty styling, particularly in the coupe version, and competitive pricing made it a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a more exciting alternative to mainstream sedans. It was also known for a relatively spacious interior for its class.
The Good

The 2000 Dodge Stratus offered a stylish design that appealed to emotional buyers, particularly the coupe. Practically, it provided decent comfort for its price point and was relatively fuel-efficient, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Its affordability made it a good value proposition for those seeking a reliable and economical car. The V6 offered a bit more performance for those seeking driving thrills.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2000 Dodge Stratus included potential transmission issues, especially with the automatic, and some electrical problems. Rust could also be a concern, depending on the climate. Suspension components were prone to wear and tear. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs on these older vehicles. Check for leaks and unusual noises during a test drive.

What Problems Does the 2000 Dodge Stratus Have?

The 2000 Dodge Stratus, like many vehicles of its age, has a history of reported problems. One of the most common concerns involves the automatic transmission, with reports of slipping, hard shifting, or complete failure. This issue is particularly prevalent in models with higher mileage or those that haven't received regular maintenance. Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and sensors, have also been reported. Rust, especially in areas with harsh winters, is another significant concern that can affect the vehicle's structural integrity and appearance. Suspension components, including struts, shocks, and ball joints, are prone to wear and tear, leading to a rough ride and potential safety hazards. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and overheating, can also occur, particularly in the V6 models. Regularly checking and maintaining fluid levels is crucial to prevent these problems. While specific recall information should be verified with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), common recalls for vehicles of this era often related to safety features like airbags or braking systems. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the age of the vehicle. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance, addressing issues promptly, and storing the vehicle properly can help extend its lifespan, but potential buyers should be prepared for potential repairs.

How long will the 2000 Dodge Stratus last?

A well-maintained 2000 Dodge Stratus could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more, representing upwards of 20 years of service. However, achieving this lifespan heavily depends on consistent maintenance, careful driving habits, and climate conditions. Neglecting maintenance, such as oil changes or transmission servicing, can significantly shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses over time include rust, suspension wear, and transmission problems. Vehicles in regions with road salt are more susceptible to rust. Regular inspections and prompt repairs are vital for long-term durability. A comprehensive pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.

Got this car only a month ago. Bought it as is because our other vehicle saw better days and finally went. It is ok but pretty low to the ground which I am not use to. I am hoping it can last for a couple of years to try and get us through. Mainly being used as a point A to point B car. Has some things that will need to take care of but had to get something quick and cheap. At this point it seems to be ok but will see down the line.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Dodge Stratus offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio, and higher trims might have included a cassette player or CD player. Power windows and locks were often optional on base models but standard on higher trims like the SE and ES. Driver-assistance features were minimal, primarily consisting of power steering and, in some cases, anti-lock brakes (ABS). Safety features typically included dual front airbags. Side airbags were not available. Some models might have included traction control as an option. The instrument cluster included basic gauges for speed, fuel level, and engine temperature. Optional features could include air conditioning, cruise control, and upgraded audio systems. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) can vary. The 2000 Dodge Stratus generally received moderate ratings for frontal crash protection. However, specific ratings should be verified using the NHTSA's or IIHS's official websites. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2000, and modern vehicles offer considerably more advanced safety technologies. Overall, the 2000 Dodge Stratus provided a functional but basic set of features, reflecting the technology available at the time. Compared to modern vehicles, its tech, entertainment, and safety offerings are quite limited.

2000 Dodge Stratus Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Dodge Stratus had a price range of approximately $14,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices are significantly lower, typically ranging from a few hundred dollars to around $3,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been substantial due to the vehicle's age and the availability of newer, more advanced cars. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, documented maintenance history, mileage, rust presence, and the functionality of key components like the engine and transmission. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command a higher price, but overall, these vehicles have very low resale value.

2000 Dodge Stratus Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2000 Dodge Stratus are typically low due to its age and low market value. Fuel costs are moderate, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While parts are generally affordable, the frequency of repairs might be higher compared to newer cars. Long-term ownership can be either economical or costly, depending on the vehicle's condition and how well it has been maintained. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential. Overall, it leans towards being a potentially costly vehicle due to its age and potential for breakdowns.

2000 Dodge Stratus Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Dodge Stratus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Dodge Stratus Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2000 Dodge Stratus competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of performance, the Stratus with the V6 engine offered comparable power to its rivals' V6 options, but the 4-cylinder was less refined than the Camry or Accord. Features were generally similar across the class, but the Japanese competitors often had better-built interiors and more standard equipment. Reliability was a significant weakness for the Stratus compared to the Camry and Accord, which were known for their longevity and dependability. The Taurus and Malibu were more comparable in terms of reliability, but the Stratus still lagged slightly behind. Price was where the Stratus excelled, often being more affordable than its Japanese rivals. However, this lower price came at the cost of reliability and overall refinement. Alternatives to the 2000 Dodge Stratus include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for superior reliability and resale value. The Ford Taurus offered a similar level of practicality and affordability with potentially lower repair costs than the Stratus. The Chevrolet Malibu was another comparable option. If reliability and long-term ownership are priorities, the Camry or Accord are significantly better choices, even if they cost a bit more upfront. For budget-conscious buyers, a well-maintained Taurus or Malibu might be a better alternative to the Stratus due to potentially lower repair frequency.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Dodge Stratus a Good Sedan?

The 2000 Dodge Stratus is suitable for budget-conscious buyers seeking inexpensive transportation, but with significant caveats. It's likely only worth buying if found in exceptionally good condition with documented maintenance history and a very low price. Avoid examples with visible rust or signs of neglect. Given its age, buying a Stratus makes sense only as a temporary solution, not a long-term investment. The ES trim with the V6 offers slightly better performance, but the 4-cylinder is more fuel-efficient. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and factor in potential repair costs. Newer, more reliable vehicles are generally a better investment, even if they cost more initially. This car is best suited for someone who needs a very cheap car and understands the risks involved.

Big car feel.

Wife"s car for fourteen years. A city runner. Average repair cost untill 2018 when the average cost got more,(per hour). 65,000 miles when the Nissan dealer gave me zilch for it. My fault for trading as we found out at the dealer that State farm had mistakenly cancelled my insurance six monthe before and had no way to get it home on a labor Day Friday afternoon.

Average Car

Got this car only a month ago. Bought it as is because our other vehicle saw better days and finally went. It is ok but pretty low to the ground which I am not use to. I am hoping it can last for a couple of years to try and get us through. Mainly being used as a point A to point B car. Has some things that will need to take care of but had to get something quick and cheap. At this point it seems to be ok but will see down the line.

I owned a 2000 model and at 92k miles, everything fell apart. Literally the mirrors fell off of it. Just a car to go from point A to point B.

9 years and still running

Well, my parents have purchased a Stratus SE with 2.4l DOHC engine brand new in late 99. Since then it has been running great even after 90000 miles. This car has proved to be very reliable and it had needed only tires and brakes replacement as well as the common dealer services. No tranny or engine problems so far. Since 2008 I have been using this car as my transportation to college and it proved to be very economic, fast and still reliable. Before this car I didn't trust in Dodge cars but after this one I have totally changed my mind.

2000 Dodge Stratus (2.0L)

I bought our '00 Stratus 4-dr/gold, 2.0L in '03 with 103,000 miles on it for only $4300. It now has 193,000 and still runs great! A fantastic value. The 2.0L engine was last made in '00 after five years, so nearly all bugs were worked through by Dodge, to include the head gasket. Very comfortable car. 2.0L engine does not have lots of power which is exactly what I wanted since this car was driven by our three kids to/from high school and college. Only repairs in last 5+ years have been transimission solenoid pack ($700) when it wouldn't come out of 1st gear one day. Also had freeze plugs changed (leaking) and had timing belt and water pump changed since they had access at same time ($900). Overall there has been minimal maintenance. Engine is still smooth, but transmission shifts hard every once in a while. Today, they are changing oil pan gasket and crankshaft sensor due to leaks. Other than that, it should be leak free and ready for our last child to take it to college. Also switching to high mileage Mobil One synthetic oil. Overall, very pleased with reliability, drive, and comfort.

windshield glare

i love the car but have a real problem with the sunglare on the windshield to the point where it is sometimes dangerous. i drive directly into the sun coming and going to work every day. there have been several times where i have had to pull off the road because i can not see and often do not see walkers or bicyclists until i am on top of them. i even bought good polarized sunglasses in hopes that would help. i would sure love to hear any suggestions someone might have. other than that the vehicle is the best car i have ever owned.
