The 2006 Dodge Stratus was a mid-size car offered in sedan and coupe body styles. Part of the third generation Stratus (2001-2006), it aimed to provide a sporty alternative in a competitive segment. Key trims included the SE, SXT, and R/T. The pricing range when new was roughly $16,000 to $22,000. It stood out for its aggressive styling (especially the coupe) and available V6 engine, offering a more engaging driving experience than some rivals.
The Good

The 2006 Dodge Stratus offered decent performance, particularly with the V6 engine, appealing to those seeking a bit of excitement. It provided comfortable seating and a relatively spacious interior. Its value proposition was strong, offering a lower price point than many competitors. For the practical buyer, it represented affordable transportation; for the emotional buyer, it offered sporty styling.

The Bad

The 2006 Dodge Stratus was known for some reliability issues, particularly with the transmission and electrical systems. Interior materials could feel cheap. Rust could be a problem in colder climates. Potential buyers should thoroughly inspect the car's history and condition before purchase, and prioritize well-maintained examples.

What Problems Does the 2006 Dodge Stratus Have?

The 2006 Dodge Stratus has some frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly slipping and failure, are common, especially in models with higher mileage. Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and lighting, are also frequently noted. The 2.7L V6 engine is known for potential oil sludge buildup if maintenance is neglected, leading to engine damage. Rust, particularly in areas with road salt, can be a long-term concern. Recalls for the 2006 Stratus have been issued for issues ranging from airbag malfunctions to potential fuel leaks. Owners have reported that the check engine light can illuminate frequently, often related to emissions control components. Early model years of this generation Stratus (2001-2003) seemed to have more pervasive issues than the later years, but the 2006 model still has its share of potential problems. Long-term reliability is generally considered below average compared to some of its competitors. Potential buyers should thoroughly research the car's history and have it inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.

How long will the 2006 Dodge Stratus last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2006 Dodge Stratus could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide reliable service for another 5-10 years. However, this is heavily dependent on how well the vehicle was maintained throughout its life. Neglecting oil changes, transmission servicing, or addressing minor issues promptly will significantly shorten its lifespan. The transmission and the 2.7L V6 engine (if equipped) are the primary weaknesses over time. Rust can also become a significant issue, especially in colder climates. Well-maintained examples with documented service records will likely offer the best long-term durability. Overall, expect potentially higher repair costs than some competitors.

My parents have had a 2004 SE for 18 years. When taken proper car of, it will last. We have used it a few times to travel between Mexico City and Austin several times and have had little issues. Since Ive been able to drive, (3 or so years) I have pushed it a bit, but still no problems. Major repairs consist of changing out the clutch due to heavy use (that may be my bad) and new coils. It has the occasional whining serpentine belt, but has never broken down on us and keeps looking great. Despite the SE being front-wheel drive and a little over 100 hp, its super fun to drive because it's relatively light. I'm around 6 feet tall and have no trouble driving the car. You could probably be up to 6'5 and be comfortable. Air conditioning hasn't been the best experience in my opinion (Texas heat is something else) but we have never had to have any major repairs on it (white exterior also helps). The back seats are roomy enough, but there is no ac in the back, but because it's a smaller car, the ac works well enough. It has decent MPG and sits around 22 - 25 MPG. The ride could be better, though. Because it's a sports-ish car, it tends to not do great on bumps, and it is not very soundproof, so it's not a silent cruiser (although not a bad thing if you like to hear the engine). I have a cloth interior that makes sure that you don't stick to the seats, but the black interior color makes it hot in the summer. It's also not the most attractive design in the inside, but It's nothing to complain about. It's definitely a much more beautiful car on the outside (especially if you take care of it) and stands out as they are not very common. Overall: A great, fun, and reliable car. I'd especially recommend it as a first car, as it is safe (due to the FWD) and looks great. I'm not planning on buying another car for the foreseeable future.

This is my second venture with the stratus model, I should of learned from my first. At 40,000 miles just after the warrenty expired both front wheel bearings went and the rotors were shot as well. At least they lasted till 65,000 miles in my 1999 status. Other repairs to date include windshield washer pump, exhaust, tie rod ends and ball joints. No wonder my neighbors driving toyota's sit out and chuckle driving 200,000 miles without any repairs and I can't make it to 50,000 miles, what a joke. If you buy this car make sure you leave enough in the budget for some craftsman tools--your gonna need them.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Dodge Stratus offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features typically included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded sound system. There were no advanced driver-assistance features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.
Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available on some trims. Side airbags were optional.
Optional features varied by trim level and could include a sunroof, upgraded audio system, and leather upholstery.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2006 Dodge Stratus (sedan) generally ranged from 4 to 5 stars for frontal and side impact protection for the driver and passenger. The coupe version had similar, but slightly varying ratings. However, it is important to review the specific crash test ratings for the body style (sedan or coupe) on the NHTSA website for the most accurate information. Keep in mind that safety standards and crash testing methodologies have advanced significantly since 2006. The Stratus lacked many of the advanced safety technologies found in newer vehicles.

2006 Dodge Stratus Prices and Market Value

The 2006 Dodge Stratus had a starting MSRP of around $16,000 to $22,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. As a used car in today's market, a 2006 Stratus typically sells for between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Stratus has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability concerns, and the abundance of similar vehicles on the used market. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it's the more desirable R/T trim. Low mileage and well-documented maintenance records can help increase resale value, but overall, its resale value remains low.

2006 Dodge Stratus Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Dodge Stratus are generally low due to its age and value. Fuel costs are average, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. The 2.7L V6 engine's potential for oil sludge and transmission problems can lead to expensive repairs. Overall, the 2006 Dodge Stratus can be a relatively costly car to own in the long run due to the increased likelihood of repairs compared to more reliable competitors. Regular maintenance is crucial to minimize these costs.

2006 Dodge Stratus Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Dodge Stratus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Dodge Stratus Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2006 Dodge Stratus competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Ford Fusion. In terms of performance, the Stratus with the V6 engine could be competitive, but the base engine lacked the refinement and power of some rivals. Feature-wise, it was generally on par with other mid-size sedans of the time, but it didn't offer any significant advantages. Reliability was where the Stratus fell short, with consistently lower ratings than the Camry, Accord, and even the Altima. Price was a strong point, often being more affordable than the Japanese competitors.
If reliability is a priority, a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord from the same year would be a better choice, despite potentially costing slightly more upfront. The Nissan Altima could be a similar alternative in terms of price and features, but its reliability is also not as strong as the Toyota or Honda. The Ford Fusion represented a reasonable American-made alternative offering slightly improved reliability compared to the Stratus. The Stratus offered more aggressive styling than some competitors, which may appeal to some buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Dodge Stratus a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2006 Dodge Stratus is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation. It's worth buying *only* if you find a well-maintained example with low mileage and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues. Prioritize models with a comprehensive service history. Avoid the 2.7L V6 engine if possible, due to its potential for oil sludge issues. The R/T trim might be desirable for its sportier styling and performance, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Given its age and potential reliability concerns, it's crucial to have a pre-purchase inspection and factor in potential repair costs. Alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are generally more reliable choices, even if they cost slightly more.

POORLY DESIGNED AND I AGREE

I purchased this car out of a title loan situation for $1350 3 years ago. It has been a good car up until a few months ago when EVERYTHING seems to be going wrong with it and nothing is a simple fix EVEN ON A MODEL THIS OLD. Im kind of stuck like chuck at the moment at this point I WILL NEVER GET BACK WHAT I HAVE INVESTED IN IT. I keep getting told it was poorly designed and I have to agree.

Not a bad car

I've got 197,600 on my 06 dodge stratus sxt 2.4l. Got it from a friend when it had 193,211. The only thing I've done to it was change the oil and changed the spark plugs and changed the blower motor resistor. The check engine light is on because of a evap leak but still runs fine

Comfortable, Reliable and great for long drives

If I had the chance I'd buy another one and have it for 7yrs+ like I did with my last stratus. It's great for traveling. I took it from Kansas to Oregon back n forth for three years. It was very comfortable and reliable. I miss it.
