Production ran from 2001 to 2006 for the sedan, with the coupe version being built from 2001-2005. The pricing range when new was roughly $15,000 to $21,000. What Problems Does the 2002 Dodge Stratus Have?

The 2002 Dodge Stratus has several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, are common. This can manifest as slipping gears, rough shifting, or complete failure. Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and lighting, are also often reported. Suspension components, including ball joints and tie rod ends, tend to wear out prematurely, leading to alignment problems and handling issues.
Rust can be a significant concern, especially in regions where road salt is used during the winter. The undercarriage and body panels are susceptible to corrosion. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and rear main seal, are frequently observed.
There have been recalls for the 2002 Dodge Stratus, typically related to safety concerns such as airbag deployment or brake system issues. Check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to the VIN of any prospective purchase.
Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the aforementioned issues. Proper maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to extending the lifespan of the vehicle. However, even with diligent care, some of these problems may still arise due to the inherent design or manufacturing limitations.

How long will the 2002 Dodge Stratus last?

With proper maintenance, a 2002 Dodge Stratus could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 15-20 years of service. However, many examples are unlikely to reach this milestone due to neglect or the aforementioned reliability issues. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid services, and addressing problems promptly are crucial for longevity. Weaknesses over time include rust, electrical component failures, and the eventual need for significant engine or transmission repairs. Poor maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan.

SRT4 Stratus
One of 1400 made especially for the Mexican Hwy Patrol by Dodge. It's EXTREMELY fast, corners like a Corvette & is reliable, I'll NEVER sell it!

I have the 2 door coupe with the 5 speed manual transmission. Bought this car new. Have had a few issues with the driver?s door hinge. Very reliable car but can be difficult and costly to find parts and sensors. The senosors start to go bad and don?t appear to affect the performance of the car but if you live in a state that requires emissions testing it will not pass. The sensors are crazy expensive.
Stratosphere
We bought our 01 Stratus RT Coupe used from the dealer with about 18K miles on it. We have had no mechanical issues whatsoever and currently have 78K miles on it. I love the power and sound of the Mitsubhishi built V6 engine. My wife and I love the style of this vehicle and we get compliments from everyone. We were concerned about buying a 2dr due to limited seating and trunk space, but this car surprised both of us as it has plenty of rear seat room and a huge deep trunk. We actullay fit a 42" Plasma TV in the box in the trunk and we were able to close the trunk lid. Great car for the money!!!!!!
Negative Owner Reviews
Dont Buy His Cars
Read all the reviews for the cars he sells! They all have transmission problems! Do not waste your time at this dealer unless you want nothing but headaches! My car only lasted 2 days!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Dodge Stratus offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features typically included a basic AM/FM radio with a cassette or CD player. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded sound system with more speakers.
Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were often optional, and cruise control was available on higher trims like the SXT and R/T. Power windows and locks were standard on most models.
Safety features included front airbags as standard equipment. Side airbags were often optional. As mentioned previously, ABS was an option that improved braking performance in emergency situations.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific safety performance details. These ratings can vary depending on the body style (sedan vs. coupe) and the specific tests performed. It's advisable to check these ratings on the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for accurate information. The 2002 Stratus generally received acceptable, but not outstanding, safety scores for its class at the time. Compared to modern vehicles, its safety features are significantly less advanced.

2002 Dodge Stratus Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Dodge Stratus had an MSRP ranging from approximately $15,000 to $21,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices are significantly lower, typically ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been substantial due to the vehicle's age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has any major mechanical issues or rust damage. Low mileage and meticulous maintenance can slightly increase resale value, but the overall depreciation is significant.

2002 Dodge Stratus Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Dodge Stratus are generally low due to its age and relatively low market value. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on the engine and driving habits. However, maintenance and repair costs can be high due to the vehicle's age and potential reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can add up quickly. Overall, long-term ownership can be costly if the vehicle requires frequent repairs. While the initial purchase price is low, potential repair bills can make it less economical than newer, more reliable alternatives.

2002 Dodge Stratus Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Dodge Stratus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Dodge Stratus Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2002 Dodge Stratus competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Ford Taurus. In terms of performance, the Stratus with the V6 engine offered decent acceleration but was not as refined as the Camry or Accord. Features were generally comparable, but the Japanese rivals often had a slight edge in terms of standard equipment and build quality.
Reliability is where the Stratus falls short compared to the Camry, Accord, and Altima, which have consistently higher reliability ratings. The Taurus was perhaps a closer competitor in terms of reliability, but even it often outperformed the Stratus.
Price was a strong point for the Stratus when new, often undercutting its rivals. However, the lower resale value and potentially higher repair costs can offset this initial advantage in the long run.
Alternatives to the 2002 Dodge Stratus include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima, particularly if reliability and long-term ownership costs are a priority. A Ford Taurus could be considered as a similar alternative, but the Japanese models generally offer a better overall ownership experience. A Mazda 6 from a similar era might also be a sportier and more reliable alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Dodge Stratus a Good Vehicle?

The 2002 Dodge Stratus is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable mid-size car, but only if they are prepared for potential maintenance and repair costs. It's worth buying only if the vehicle is in exceptionally good condition, has a well-documented maintenance history, and is priced accordingly. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Opting for a well-maintained SXT or R/T with the V6 engine might provide a slightly more enjoyable driving experience, but be aware of potential transmission issues. Given its age and reliability concerns, consider alternatives unless the price is extremely low and you're willing to accept the risks.

Reliable, fun and cheap

I have a 2002 dodge stratus RT manual coupe, it's awesome 212k miles still going strong, for only having 200 hp it moves, when you want it to go it goes. Love this car and haven't had any mechanical problems, they're hard to find, but if you do for the right price, no reason you shouldn't check it out.

unique and distinctive styling.

great everyday driver. good on gas, easy to drive when you get used to it. nice sound system. I think it's styling is so unique. Kind of looks like a Maserati from the front. The women at work think it's an exotic sports car. Passenger compartment gets kind of hot on your feet even with a/c on full. I will keep it running and maintained as long as I can.
