The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck, part of the second generation of Sierra trucks introduced in 1999. Available in regular, extended, and crew cab body styles, it was offered in trims like the base, SLE, and SLT. Pricing ranged from around $25,000 to $40,000 when new. The Sierra 2500 stood out for its robust towing capabilities and comfortable ride for a heavy-duty truck, making it popular among those needing a workhorse without sacrificing comfort.
The Good

The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 offers impressive performance thanks to its powerful engine options and robust towing capacity. It has proven reliability, a comfortable cabin (especially in higher trims), and a classic, rugged design. For the practical buyer, it's a capable work truck. Emotionally, it provides a sense of power and dependability.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 include rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Watch out for transmission issues, especially with the 4L80E. Some owners have reported electrical problems and issues with the fuel pump. Fuel economy is also naturally poor compared to smaller vehicles.

What Problems Does the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 often revolve around rust, especially in areas with salted roads during winter. The rocker panels, cab corners, and wheel wells are particularly susceptible. Transmission issues, specifically with the 4L80E automatic transmission in gas-powered models, are also common, including slipping and hard shifting. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump and fuel sending unit, leading to inaccurate fuel gauge readings or fuel starvation.

Electrical problems can arise, ranging from faulty sensors to issues with the instrument cluster. The Duramax diesel engine is generally reliable, but injectors and the fuel injection pump (CP3) can be potential failure points over time. There were recalls for certain 2004 models related to brake light issues and potential problems with the pitman arm, which could affect steering. Long-term reliability can be affected by deferred maintenance. Regular fluid changes (transmission, engine oil, coolant) are crucial to preventing major component failures. The IFS (independent front suspension) can also require maintenance, especially ball joints and tie rod ends, particularly if the truck is used for heavy towing or off-roading.

How long will the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 can easily reach 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Years of service can extend well beyond 20 years. Durability hinges on consistent upkeep. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing rust promptly are essential. Weaknesses that emerge over time include suspension component wear, particularly in the front end. Rust is a significant long-term enemy. The Duramax diesel, if maintained, can be exceptionally durable. However, neglect will significantly shorten its lifespan. The gas engines, while robust, might require more frequent repairs as they age.

First , I bought gas 6.0 , the diesels are great if you have serious towing needs. You just need to realize no matter how well you maintain a diesel it will at some point have an expensive repair. I've had my truck about 12 years. Regular maintenance , a few batteries , couple sets of tires and a MAF sensor. I tow a couple different trailers and the heaviest is less than 10k loaded. Towing , zero issues , no band aids , no overloads , no equalizing hitch , no sway control. Simply not needed. Drives amazing, stops great, Roughly 10 to 12 MPG towing. Unloaded driving at 60 / 65 on cruise solid 15 to 16 MPG. Yes , it won't pul the hills like a diesel but thats a small price to pay for an absolutely amazing truck. I want a new truck in the worst way but just can't part with this truck. A very good truck if you find a clean well maintained one.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio, and higher trims might have a CD player. Optional entertainment upgrades included a Bose premium sound system. Driver-assistance features were limited, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Safety features included standard airbags (driver and passenger), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and daytime running lights. Some models had optional fog lights.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 generally showed acceptable performance for frontal impacts. However, side-impact crash testing was less comprehensive at that time. Optional features impacting safety included adjustable pedals (allowing drivers to maintain a safe distance from the steering wheel and airbag) and OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and vehicle location services. Overall, the 2004 Sierra 2500 prioritized basic safety and utility over advanced technology. Modern vehicles offer a significantly greater array of driver-assistance and safety technologies.

2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 ranged from approximately $25,000 to $40,000 depending on the cab style, trim level, engine, and options. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 or even higher for well-maintained, low-mileage examples, especially Duramax diesel models. Depreciation has been significant, but heavy-duty trucks tend to hold their value better than smaller vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (diesel commands a premium), 4WD capability, overall condition, rust, and mileage. Low mileage, minimal rust, and a desirable engine configuration will result in the highest resale prices.

2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Cost of Ownership

The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 is generally not economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on coverage and driving record. Fuel costs are significant, especially with the gas engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly as the truck ages. Parts can be more expensive compared to smaller vehicles. Long-term ownership requires diligent maintenance to avoid costly repairs. Rust prevention is crucial. Budgeting for unexpected repairs is advisable. Diesel models might have higher initial repair costs but potentially offer better longevity with proper care.

2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500's key rivals included the Ford F-250 Super Duty and the Dodge Ram 2500. In terms of performance, the Sierra 2500 offered competitive towing and hauling capabilities, especially with the Duramax diesel. The Ford F-250, particularly with the Power Stroke diesel, was a strong contender. The Dodge Ram 2500 offered a more rugged, truck-like feel. In terms of features, the Sierra 2500 was generally on par with its rivals, offering similar levels of comfort and convenience in comparable trim levels. Reliability is a mixed bag. All three trucks have their share of potential issues, but the Duramax engine is often considered a reliable choice. Price-wise, the Sierra 2500 was typically competitive with the F-250 and Ram 2500.

Alternatives to consider include the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, which is mechanically identical to the Sierra 2500 but might offer slightly different styling preferences. A well-maintained Ford F-250 Super Duty with the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel (older) or a later model with the improved 6.0L or 6.4L diesel (with proper maintenance upgrades) could also be a viable alternative if diesel power is a must. The Dodge Ram 2500 offers a different driving experience and styling, appealing to those who prefer a more traditional truck feel.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 is ideal for those needing a capable and relatively comfortable heavy-duty truck for towing, hauling, or work purposes. It's worth buying *used* if found in good condition with documented maintenance. The Duramax diesel models are highly desirable but require careful inspection due to potential injector and fuel pump issues. Prioritize trucks with minimal rust, especially in areas prone to corrosion. The SLE and SLT trims offer a more comfortable and feature-rich experience compared to the base model. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and have it checked by a trusted mechanic before committing. Avoid trucks with excessive rust or signs of neglect.

Was sold a pack of lies

I was told this truck had been well maintained just to find it had been modified by someone who didn’t know what they were doing AND the transfer case was bone dry and even had dirt in it. Was told it was rust free only to find rust painted over.

Very reliable pickup

I purchased this pickup 6 years ago. Never once did it break down on me or left me stranded. Mileage is about 13 to 15 based on speed. Very powerfull engine and frame. Hauls very well. Only issue is speedometer gauge issue with 03 to 07 GMC where it can on few days show incorrect speed because gauge cluster sometimes gets stuck. The gauge cluster is about 300 dollars. Other than that, a wonderfull long lasting 4x4 pickup that will not disappoint.

Great weekly commuter & weekend workhorse!

-This windy input is based on some years of owning various makes & types of trucks & 4x4s prior to purchasing my 2004 GMC w/22K miles in 03/2005 (paid ~$20K & new sticker was $33K)... -7-years later, my base-model non-HD 2500 4x4 has 156K mi. Its aerodynamic design with ext. cab (doubles as a toolbox), LQ-6.0L, & 4L80 trans. has endured workloads that have stranded other trucks while averaging great 3/4-ton truck economy (city-15mpg & hwy-20mpg). Unloaded, the truck effortlessly spins its tires & refuses to downshift while maintaining a ~70mph cruise on hilly hwys. -Routine maintenance & upgrades on this truck can be easily & economically performed by average wrench-turners w/reasonable computer literacy; added to the fact that the GM Vortec & LS-type engines have only improved, adding to increased 2nd-hand & aftermarket support. -Aesthetically, I'm not crazy about the under-bite front bumper or needing fender flares for slightly wider wheels & tires, my cloth seats still look great, but my console lid is now a lift-off.... -I've replaced the recalled gauge cluster & steering shaft. I've also replaced the front hub assys, power steering pump, rear-diff seal, water pump, & crank sensor. To improve fuel mileage, I lessened the intake & exhaust restrictions, lowered the engine & trans temps, upgraded coil packs, & still perform routine maintenance. -From my perspective, automotive wear & tear is so subjective that the true measure of reliability is predictability of failure (not leaving you stranded), coupled with, ease & economy of repair. On that note, it has been my experience that using GM & AC Delco parts will minimize the frequency of repair(s), but bang-for-the-buck, I count myself lucky to own such a great vehicle that doubles flawlessly as a 4wd truck!
