The 2005 Volvo V70 is a mid-size wagon known for its safety, practicality, and comfortable ride. Part of the second-generation V70 (2000-2007), it offered a blend of utility and Scandinavian design. Key trims included the base V70, 2.5T, and the sporty T5. At the time, new pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000. Used models now range significantly based on condition and mileage. Its longevity and reputation for safety make it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2005 Volvo V70 offers a compelling mix of virtues. Practically, it boasts ample cargo space and a reputation for Volvo safety. Emotionally, the comfortable ride and distinctive Scandinavian design provide a sense of understated luxury. Performance is adequate, reliability is generally good, and the value proposition, especially in the used market, is strong.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2005 Volvo V70 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Volvo V70 often revolve around electrical components and wear items. The Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) is a common concern; symptoms include erratic idling or stalling. While a recall addressed some ETM issues, it's crucial to verify if a specific vehicle has had the necessary repair. Suspension components like struts, bushings, and control arms are prone to wear and tear, especially in regions with rough roads. Climate control issues, such as blower motor failures and AC compressor problems, are also reported.
Long-term reliability concerns include potential oil leaks from the engine and transmission, especially as the vehicle ages. Turbo models require meticulous maintenance, including frequent oil changes, to prevent turbocharger failure. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters and road salt. It's essential to inspect the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion.
While the 2005 model year doesn't have any specific notorious issues exclusive to it, earlier years in this generation (2001-2002) had more pronounced ETM problems, so verifying the ETM status is vital for any V70 from this era. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for maintaining the long-term reliability of the 2005 Volvo V70. Check for recalls on the NHTSA website using the VIN.

How long will the 2005 Volvo V70 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2005 Volvo V70 can easily surpass 200,000 miles or provide 15-20 years of service. Many owners report reaching 250,000+ miles with consistent care. Long-term durability hinges on addressing common weaknesses like suspension wear, electrical issues (especially the ETM), and potential oil leaks. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are crucial. Neglecting these areas will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Rust prevention is also vital, especially in colder climates. Engine and transmission mounts can also become worn over time impacting ride quality.

Right now it is at 290,000 miles and still running fine. I do routine maintenance and cannot say enough about how much this car is growing on me every day.

Volvo is great, one of the best safe cars in the world, I don't need to say more it is internationally know for it reliability.
Negative Owner Reviews
Noy Liking Volvo Anymore
I bought this car for my wife and our new baby. The child seat takes up most of the back seat and doesn't allow much space for the front passengers. With another baby on the way we have to buy a minivan now to accomodate us. The worst part about the car is the service. We bought the car new; it has a rattle behind the door, the passenger side seat moves when breaking. Three times now the car won't start displaying the message "try again" as if we were gambling. When we took it to the last service the person forgot to reset the "service engine" light and so I had to drive an hour and a half out of my way to get that reset. Don't buy this car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Volvo V70 came with a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard safety equipment included anti-lock brakes (ABS), front and side airbags, and whiplash protection system (WHIPS) in the front seats. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but some models offered traction control and stability control.
Entertainment features typically included a radio with a CD player. Higher trims and optional packages added features such as a premium sound system (often from Dynaudio), a sunroof, leather seats, and a navigation system (though the navigation systems of this era were often dated compared to modern smartphones).
Safety was a major selling point for Volvo, and the V70 performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) typically gave the V70 4 or 5 stars for frontal and side impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also gave the V70 good ratings in their crash tests. Keep in mind these ratings are relative to vehicles of the same era.
Optional features varied by trim level and packages. Popular options included heated seats, integrated child booster seats in the rear, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Overall, while not cutting-edge by today's standards, the 2005 V70 offered a solid suite of safety and convenience features for its time.

2005 Volvo V70 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Volvo V70 ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find examples ranging from $2,000 to $8,000. Depreciation has been substantial, as is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's mechanical condition, service history, presence of desirable options (like leather or a sunroof), and overall cosmetic appearance. Well-maintained examples with low mileage command a premium, while neglected vehicles fetch significantly less.

2005 Volvo V70 Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Volvo V70 is moderately expensive to own long-term. Insurance costs are typically average for a vehicle of its class and age. Fuel economy is reasonable, but not exceptional. Maintenance can be more costly than domestic brands, as Volvo parts can be pricier. Repair costs can also be high, especially for specialized components like the ETM or turbocharger. Regular maintenance and proactive repairs are crucial to minimizing long-term ownership costs. DIY repairs can save money if you are mechanically inclined.

2005 Volvo V70 Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Volvo V70 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Volvo V70 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2005 Volvo V70 competed with wagons like the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 Series Touring, and Subaru Outback. Compared to the German rivals, the V70 offered a more comfortable ride and a simpler, less overtly sporty driving experience. The Audi and BMW often had better handling but could be more expensive to maintain. The Subaru Outback offered all-wheel drive as standard and was generally more rugged, but the V70 often had a more refined interior.
In terms of reliability, the V70 is generally comparable to the Audi and BMW, though all three can have issues as they age. The Outback is often considered slightly more reliable. Pricewise, the V70 often sits between the more expensive German wagons and the more affordable Outback, especially in the used market.
Alternatives to the V70 include the Acura TSX wagon (if you can find one), which offered a blend of reliability and features. A newer Subaru Outback (2010+) might be a better choice if all-wheel drive and modern features are priorities. If performance is paramount, the BMW 3 Series Touring remains a compelling option, but be prepared for higher maintenance costs. For a balance of features, reliability, and price, the Volvo V70 is a solid choice, especially for those prioritizing safety and comfort.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Volvo V70 a Good Sedan?

The 2005 Volvo V70 is a worthwhile purchase for those seeking a safe, practical, and comfortable wagon at an affordable price point. It's ideal for families needing cargo space and prioritizing safety. It's generally worth buying used, as new models are no longer available. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential to identify potential issues. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records. The 2.5T trim offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the T5 provides more spirited driving. Avoid neglected vehicles, as repair costs can quickly outweigh the purchase price. The V70 presents a blend of Scandinavian style, practicality, and safety that remains appealing even today.

I own this 2005 V70 2WD 2.

I own this 2005 V70 2WD 2.4l 5 cylinder, OD: 130,000 miles. If you plan on repairing the car your self you will have to purchase a dice electronic tool called DICE which is used to diagnose the car and have access to vida online where you will have to pay a subscription fee which can range from $190 for a 3 days to $600 for a month there will be other additional fees for any repairs plus if you need any software up dates those are about $60 ea. mine needs 6 updates. If you need to input new codes for replacement car keys I bought 2 new keys with remote on ea. local key maker keyed them for $70ea. but could not program them to car. On vida system online you will need to have a locksmiths license to be able to unlock the feature. Other wise you will have to go to Volvo and pay about $420 per key. Any abs or break fixes you will need dice tool and access to vida online. There are all kinds of these tools online but vida will not work with them. There is a lot more but I will stop here.

Exhilerating car for Soccer moms / dads. Fast!

Great car that is totally practical but fun to drive. 6 Speed Manual transmission is amazing. Turbo kicks into gear and you really feel the 300 HP. Have taken on serious sports cars such as Porsche Boxter and have beaten them on the turns....with appropriate tires of course. I recommend Pirelli or Goodyear Eagles for performance. Standard low profile or even all weather tires are still terrific for the car although I would not push as hard in competition. The volvo has 3 stability settings, comfort, sport and performance. Each instantly responds. Of course with this car you can fit 5 and have room for luggage and skis. One negative is the turning radius due to the four wheel drive. Car performs well in all terrain and weather. Seat heaters, premium sound. Blue leather interior. Highly recommended.

most comfortable car I’ve driven

It has plenty of legroom/head space in the front seats, although it is a little tight in the back. All around, the comfort is amazing, the ride quality is great and the practicality is a 10/10 for a 13 year old car

It had issues.

This car was great when we first bought it. We were excited that it was rated one of the safest cars on the road. But, after owning it for a couple of years it started have transmission issues that could not be repaired even though we spent thousands of dollars on it. We took excellent care of it with regular maintenance, but that didn't prevent this issue. We later found out that what we experienced with this car was a common issue with this specific type of car.

Reliable Volvo Wagon

I own a 2005 Volvo V70 2.4 FWD. I have owned my V70 for 14 months and 32,000 miles. It has been an excellent vehicle. Extremely reliable! Only had a problem with the heating/cooling, but a simple replacement of the thermostat and sensor resolved the issue. The only complaints I have are: - Low ground clearance (living on a dirt road in New England has proven that mud season is no match for a low setting vehicle) - It is very easy to leave the parking lights on as there is no sound to alert you that the lights are on - Definitely would consider an AWD for my next Volvo vehicle The pros definitely outweigh the cons: - Very comfortable seats - Impressive features for an `05 - Excellent visibility - Great gas mileage for such a large wagon (27-32 mpg) - Minimal repairs needed (car has 182K miles) - Decent audio system - High quality interior (much better than my parents Infiniti) - Fold-flat rear seats!! (Something that my prior wagon lacked) - So much storage and cargo space! - Has get-up-and-go although it is a non-turbo model, have no issues getting up to speed on the highway Overall, I have been very pleased with my V70. Giving up such a wonderful wagon will not be easy!!

Volvo V70RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

This is a brief review of the V70-R, the high-performance version of Volvo's venerable wagon produced from 2004-07. It's an all wheel drive 300 HP turbocharged inline 5 cylinder with computer controlled semi-active shock absorbers and Volvo's superb 'Dynamic Stability and Traction Control'. A reprogrammed ECU can quickly add another 30 HP. The manual 6-speed transmission is a few seconds faster 0-60, since the 5-speed Geartronic automatic is torque limited in 1st & 2nd gears. At a glance, it's a soccer mom's wagon, but subtle details reveal it's sporting nature. A test drive confirms performance approaching the BMW M and Audi S class cars. It's a real sleeper that will outrun many a 'boy-racer'. Volvo made numerous improvements to the R for the 2005 model year, providing greater reliability. But the car can be frightfully expensive to maintain, particularly at Volvo dealerships. Despite the expense, V70R's have earned a cult-like following among enthusiasts.

Best Wagon for the $$$$$

I have the non-turbo base w/5speed. Bought new 4 1/2 years ago. It was loaded for the base model, wish they'd offered bi-xenon lighting. Despite the base engine, the stick allows better engine and power control. It is fun, reliable and the best wagon for the money. I get 23-24mpg combined driving mileage.
