The 2009 Nissan Armada is a full-size SUV, part of the first generation (2004-2015). It offers a robust body-on-frame design. Key trims include the SE, LE, and Platinum. New, it ranged approximately from $35,000 to $48,000. Its spacious interior and substantial towing capacity made it popular for families and those needing to haul heavy loads. The Armada stood out for its powerful V8 engine and comfortable ride.
The Good

The 2009 Armada boasts strong V8 performance and a comfortable, spacious interior, appealing to those valuing power and family practicality. It's reliable and offers considerable value in the used market. Its imposing design and commanding road presence can emotionally appeal to drivers seeking a powerful SUV.

The Bad

The 2009 Armada's significant weaknesses include poor fuel economy and large size, making it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues, particularly slipping or harsh shifting, and rust, especially in areas with road salt. Also, be mindful of potential electrical problems.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Armada Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Nissan Armada include issues with the transmission, such as slipping or harsh shifting, especially at higher mileage. Some owners have reported premature brake wear and issues with the rear air conditioning system. Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas that use road salt during winter. Cracking dashboards are also reported, but primarily cosmetic. There have been recalls related to airbags, fuel leaks, and brake light switch malfunctions. Long-term reliability can be affected by neglected maintenance. Early model years (2004-2007) had more reported issues with the exhaust manifolds cracking. The 2009 model, while generally more reliable than earlier years, still requires careful inspection before purchase. Potential buyers should check the vehicle history report for any past recalls or reported problems. Suspension components, especially the air suspension on higher trims, can also be a source of expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. Properly maintained Armadas can last a long time, but neglecting maintenance can lead to significant problems.

How long will the 2009 Nissan Armada last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2009 Nissan Armada can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system maintenance are crucial. Weaknesses that emerge over time often include suspension wear (especially air suspension systems), potential transmission issues, and rust. Electrical problems can also arise as components age. Neglecting these areas will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Proper care is essential to maximize the Armada's potential longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Nissan Armada came equipped with standard features like keyless entry, power windows and locks, and an AM/FM/CD audio system. Higher trims offered more advanced tech. The LE trim added leather upholstery, a Bose audio system, a rearview camera, and automatic climate control. The Platinum trim included heated front seats, a navigation system, and a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. A rearview camera was available on higher trims. Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, and a full complement of airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) showed generally good scores, with 4 or 5 stars in most categories. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were less comprehensive but generally indicated acceptable performance for its class. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2009.

Optional features included a sunroof, adjustable pedals, and upgraded audio systems. The available navigation system was relatively basic compared to modern systems. While the Armada offered a reasonable level of technology for its time, it lacks many of the advanced safety and driver-assistance features found in newer vehicles.

2009 Nissan Armada Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Nissan Armada ranged from approximately $35,000 to $48,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Armada has depreciated significantly due to its age, high fuel consumption, and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include its overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's a 2WD or 4WD model. Models with lower mileage and a clean vehicle history report command higher prices. Rust and mechanical issues negatively impact its value.

2009 Nissan Armada Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Nissan Armada is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate, but fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be expensive, especially for suspension and transmission repairs. Replacement parts are generally available but can be pricey. Long-term ownership requires diligent maintenance to avoid costly breakdowns. Due to its age and potential repair needs, budgeting for unexpected expenses is crucial. It's not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2009 Nissan Armada Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Nissan Armada is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Nissan Armada Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Nissan Armada competed against the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Armada's V8 engine was comparable to its rivals. Features were also similar across the class, with available leather upholstery, entertainment systems, and navigation. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Sequoia is generally considered more reliable, while the Tahoe has its own set of common issues. The Armada falls somewhere in between.

Price-wise, the Armada often offered a slightly lower entry point than the Sequoia when new, but used prices are now very similar depending on condition. The Tahoe and Expedition often undercut the Armada in price, both new and used.

Alternatives to the 2009 Armada include:
  • Toyota Sequoia: Offers similar capabilities with potentially better long-term reliability.
  • Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon: More readily available and potentially cheaper to buy, but research common issues beforehand.
  • Ford Expedition: Similar to the Tahoe in terms of price and availability, with comparable features.
Depending on your priorities (budget, reliability, features), one of these alternatives might be a better choice than the Armada. Considering a newer Tahoe/Yukon or Expedition model can provide updated features and potentially better fuel economy.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Nissan Armada a Good Wagon?

The 2009 Nissan Armada is ideal for buyers needing a powerful, spacious SUV for towing and hauling, and who prioritize size and capability over fuel economy. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history and low mileage for its age. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential. The LE or Platinum trims offer more desirable features. Be prepared for higher running costs, including fuel and maintenance. If reliability and fuel efficiency are top priorities, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sequoia or newer SUVs. It's a good value for the money *if* you know what you're getting into.
