The 2012 Nissan Armada is a full-size SUV, known for its robust capabilities and spacious interior. Part of the Armada's first generation, it offers truck-based underpinnings for serious towing and hauling. Key trims include the SV, SL, and Platinum. Pricing in 2012 ranged from approximately $38,000 to $50,000 new. Its standout features include a powerful V8 engine and ample passenger room, making it a popular choice for families needing substantial space and towing capacity.
The Good

The 2012 Armada offers a potent V8 engine for strong performance and towing, appealing to practical buyers needing capability. It provides a comfortable, spacious cabin for families. While fuel efficiency isn't its strength, the Armada's bold design and feeling of security appeal to emotional buyers seeking a commanding presence on the road.

The Bad

The 2012 Nissan Armada's weaknesses include poor fuel economy, a common concern for large SUVs. The interior materials, while spacious, aren't as upscale as some competitors. Also, watch out for potential issues with the automatic transmission and the rear air suspension system. Rust can also be an issue in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Armada Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Nissan Armada include issues with the automatic transmission, sometimes exhibiting rough shifting or complete failure. The rear air suspension system is also a known weak point, with reports of compressor failures and leaks leading to ride height issues. Owners have also reported problems with the climate control system, specifically with the rear air conditioning.
Some model years, including 2012, have experienced recalls related to the fuel sending unit, which could cause inaccurate fuel level readings. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the durability of the transmission and suspension components, especially with regular towing or heavy use. Rust, particularly in regions with salted roads, is also a recurring issue. It's important to check for rust on the undercarriage, around the wheel wells, and on the body panels. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes and inspection of the suspension system, is crucial for extending the Armada's lifespan. Checking the vehicle history report for any past recall repairs is also recommended.

How long will the 2012 Nissan Armada last?

With good maintenance, a 2012 Nissan Armada can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting transmission fluid changes or suspension repairs will significantly shorten its lifespan. The Armada's weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the aforementioned rear air suspension and transmission problems. Regular servicing, including oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid flushes, is crucial for maximizing its longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Nissan Armada comes standard with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, and a premium audio system. Higher trims like the SL add leather upholstery, heated front seats, a rearview camera, and a power liftgate.
The Platinum trim includes a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player, and upgraded leather. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles but the Platinum trim offers blind-spot monitoring.
Safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a full suite of airbags. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) give the 2012 Armada four out of five stars overall. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may vary, but generally reflect good performance in moderate overlap front tests. Optional features available on higher trims include a sunroof and upgraded audio systems. The built-in tech, while functional, feels dated compared to contemporary vehicles, lacking features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

2012 Nissan Armada Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Nissan Armada ranged from approximately $38,000 to $50,000 depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, varying based on condition, mileage, and location. The Armada has depreciated significantly due to its age, fuel inefficiency, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable features like four-wheel drive and the Platinum trim's entertainment package.

2012 Nissan Armada Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Nissan Armada is generally considered costly to own. Insurance costs are moderate to high due to its size and potential repair expenses. Fuel costs are significant due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially with potential transmission and suspension issues. Long-term ownership costs are further increased by the potential for rust and the need for regular servicing to maintain reliability. It's not an economical choice compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient SUVs.

2012 Nissan Armada Insurance

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Nissan Armada Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2012 Nissan Armada competes with vehicles like the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Armada's V8 engine is comparable to its rivals, offering strong towing capability. However, its fuel economy is generally worse.
Regarding features, the Armada's technology is dated compared to some competitors, particularly in base trims. The Tahoe and Yukon offer similar features and often better fuel economy. The Sequoia is known for its superior reliability. The Expedition boasts a more comfortable ride, especially in later model years.
In terms of price, the Armada is often more affordable on the used market than the Sequoia, but its higher running costs can offset the initial savings. Considering the Armada's age and potential reliability concerns, the Toyota Sequoia is a potentially better alternative due to its proven long-term dependability, even if it commands a higher price. The Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon are similar alternatives offering a good balance of features and performance. However, carefully review their reliability records, particularly regarding transmission issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Nissan Armada a Good Wagon?

The 2012 Nissan Armada is ideal for buyers needing a large, capable SUV for towing and passenger space on a budget. It's worth buying *used* if purchased at a significantly lower price than its competitors and if a thorough inspection reveals no major issues, especially with the transmission and rear suspension. The Platinum trim offers the most features, but consider the potential for higher maintenance costs on its advanced systems. If reliability is a top priority, other options like the Toyota Sequoia might be a better choice, albeit at a higher price point. Consider the fuel costs and potential repair bills before committing to a purchase.

Great choice for an SUV

The Armada was clean and exactly as the photos had indicated it would be. We worked out the deal in email and phone, I showed up, paid cash and drove it away. I had gotten it because I had owned a similar year model of Pathfinder and this was similar, but less crowded. Great choice in car and dealer and I'm happy.

A great towing vehicle

We bought this specifically to tow a new travel trailer. We are still getting used to it, but, so far, it is living up to our hopes. It has lots of power, rides very well and is well-equipped. We plan to camp out west this summer, so will have better feedback then.
