What Problems Does the 2008 Nissan Armada Have?

The 2008 Nissan Armada, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems and potential long-term reliability concerns. Transmission issues, including slipping and harsh shifting, have been reported, potentially requiring expensive repairs. Another common issue involves the rear air suspension (if equipped), which can fail over time, leading to a saggy rear end and compromised ride quality. Replacing the air suspension components can be costly.

Brake issues, such as premature wear and ABS sensor failures, are also relatively common. Some owners have reported problems with the exhaust manifolds cracking, leading to noisy engine operation. Rust can be a significant concern, especially in regions with harsh winters or coastal environments. Check carefully for rust on the undercarriage, body panels, and around the wheel wells.

Recalls for the 2008 Armada have included issues related to the fuel filler tube and potential problems with the passenger-side airbag. Always check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term, keeping an eye on the cooling system is important, as overheating can lead to more significant engine damage. Regular fluid changes and maintenance are critical to prolonging the life of the Armada.

How long will the 2008 Nissan Armada last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Nissan Armada can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, particularly transmission fluid changes and cooling system upkeep, can significantly shorten its lifespan. Common long-term weaknesses include rust, rear air suspension failures, and potential transmission issues. Keeping these areas well-maintained is essential for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Owners should pay close attention to any unusual noises or vibrations, as these could indicate developing problems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Nissan Armada came with a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included power windows and locks, keyless entry, and a CD stereo system. Higher trims offered features like leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, automatic climate control, and a premium audio system. Some models also included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system for passengers.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but it did offer features like cruise control and available parking sensors. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and front and side airbags. Optional safety features included side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) showed mixed results. While it generally performed well in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was rated lower. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may vary, so it's crucial to research specific ratings for the 2008 model year.

Optional tech features included a navigation system, though it was dated compared to modern systems. Overall, the 2008 Armada focused more on spaciousness and towing capacity than cutting-edge technology. Buyers prioritized its utility and passenger space over advanced tech features available in newer vehicles. Reviewing specific crash test data for the model year is always recommended before purchasing.

2008 Nissan Armada Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Nissan Armada ranged from approximately $35,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim level and options. Today, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and location. The Armada has depreciated significantly due to its age, fuel economy, and the availability of newer, more efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include a well-maintained engine, absence of rust, complete service records, and desirable options like the rear entertainment system. High mileage and mechanical issues significantly lower resale value. Demand for large SUVs also plays a role.

2008 Nissan Armada Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Nissan Armada is generally costly to own due to its poor fuel economy, averaging around 12-18 mpg. Insurance costs are moderate, but maintenance and repair expenses can be high, especially if issues like the rear air suspension or transmission arise. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and brake replacements, is standard, but larger repairs can quickly add up. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential expensive repairs. It's not an economical choice compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient SUVs.

2008 Nissan Armada Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Nissan Armada is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Nissan Armada Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Nissan Armada competes with other full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Armada's V8 engine is comparable, offering strong towing capacity. However, its fuel economy is typically worse than its rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a similar range of amenities, though some competitors may have slightly more modern tech features for the model year.

Reliability is a mixed bag. While the Armada can be reliable with proper maintenance, some rivals like the Toyota Sequoia have a stronger reputation for long-term dependability. Price-wise, a used Armada may be slightly more affordable than a Sequoia but potentially more expensive than a Tahoe or Expedition depending on condition and mileage.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Sequoia: A more reliable option with comparable features and towing capacity.
  • Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon: More readily available and potentially cheaper, but fuel economy is similar.
  • Ford Expedition: Offers similar capabilities and features, often at a competitive price.
If reliability is a top priority, the Sequoia is a better choice. If budget is a major concern, the Tahoe or Expedition might be more appealing. Each option presents different pros and cons.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Nissan Armada a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Nissan Armada is ideal for buyers needing a powerful, spacious SUV with strong towing capabilities and don't mind poor fuel economy. It's worth buying used if found in good condition with documented maintenance history and a reasonable price. Avoid models with significant rust or signs of neglect. The LE trim offers the best balance of features and value. It’s not recommended for those prioritizing fuel efficiency or modern technology. Ensure a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic before purchasing, paying particular attention to the transmission, rear air suspension (if equipped), and potential rust issues. If you need a workhorse SUV and can tolerate the higher running costs, a well-maintained 2008 Armada could be a viable option.

Still Going Well After 200,000 miles On The Clock

I've had this car for about 9 years. I love how comfortable and spacious it is. We take it on road trips every year, and the conditions are hot! The overhead console helps with it's adjustable air vents, fans and temp gage. In an earlier review I mentioned brake trouble. I have not have any further problems. I do get my brakes check whenever it is serviced. The dark red paint is still excellent. There is a small area of worn paint at the very back on the tailfin above the tail gate. Gas mileage bad. This is a great car.

Highway Driver on January 11, 2018

Very Comfortable. Replaced Brakes Twice

I wanted a car that would still be comfortable after many hours of driving. This car is it. I prefer my Armada over any car I have previously owned. In the last couple of years I haven't been as happy due to safety. The thing that drives me crazy, and it is serious, is repeatedly needing the brakes replaced. The failure comes on suddenly, and can't be fixed quickly. If you want a safe car this might not be the one.
