Based on 15 Owner Reviews â–¶
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Nissan Xterra is a rugged, truck-based SUV designed for off-road adventures and practical daily use. Part of the second generation (2005-2015), it features a distinctive boxy body style. Key trims include the X, S, SE, Off-Road (later PRO-4X), and LE. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000 new. Its appeal lies in its off-road capability, durable construction, and utilitarian design, setting it apart from more car-like SUVs.
The Good

The 2009 Xterra offers robust performance thanks to its powerful V6 engine and capable 4WD system, appealing to adventurous drivers. Its rugged design and dependability provide peace of mind for practical buyers. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers excellent value for those prioritizing durability and off-road prowess. The Xterra offers go-anywhere potential.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2009 Xterra include relatively poor fuel economy compared to other SUVs. Some owners have reported issues with the SMOD (Strawberry Milkshake of Death) related to transmission cooler failure in earlier models, although this is less prevalent in the 2009. Check for rust, especially in northern climates, and be mindful of potential rear differential issues.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Xterra Have?

The 2009 Nissan Xterra is generally considered reliable, but some common issues have been reported. The most infamous is the potential for "SMOD" (Strawberry Milkshake of Death), where the transmission cooler inside the radiator fails, mixing coolant with transmission fluid. While less common in the 2009 model than in earlier years, it's crucial to inspect the coolant and transmission fluid regularly.

Other reported problems include: potential timing chain guide wear, particularly in higher mileage vehicles. This can lead to costly repairs if not addressed. Rear differential issues can also occur, especially with heavy off-road use. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Inspect the frame and undercarriage carefully.

Check for any open recalls related to your specific VIN. While the 2009 Xterra is not subject to as many recalls as some older models, staying informed about potential safety issues is always recommended. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these potential long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2009 Nissan Xterra last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Nissan Xterra can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15+ years of service. Many owners report reaching 250,000 miles or more. Key to longevity is consistent maintenance, especially fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, differential fluid).

Long-term durability depends heavily on usage. Off-road use puts more stress on components like the suspension, drivetrain, and frame. Weaknesses over time include potential rust formation, timing chain guide wear, and differential issues. The automatic transmission, if not properly maintained, can also become a point of failure. Preventative maintenance is crucial for a long lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Nissan Xterra's tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by modern standards, reflecting its focus on utility and off-road capability. Standard features typically include an AM/FM/CD audio system, and auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims may offer premium Rockford Fosgate audio systems with a subwoofer.

Driver-assistance features are minimal. ABS and stability control are standard.

Safety features include:
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Front and side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags

The 2009 Nissan Xterra received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA for its time. The NHTSA gave it 4 stars for frontal crash protection (driver and passenger) and 5 stars for side crash protection. The IIHS rated it "Good" in frontal offset and side impact tests.

Optional features varied by trim level and could include a sunroof, roof-mounted off-road lights (PRO-4X), and a navigation system (rare). Overall, the Xterra prioritizes fundamental safety and reliability over advanced technology.

2009 Nissan Xterra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Nissan Xterra ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, with condition, mileage, and trim being the primary factors influencing value.

The Xterra has depreciated considerably, but its resale value is relatively strong compared to other SUVs of its age, particularly for well-maintained PRO-4X models. Factors affecting resale value include: mileage, condition (rust-free examples command a premium), trim level (PRO-4X being most desirable), and overall maintenance history. Low mileage examples in excellent condition will command the highest prices.

2009 Nissan Xterra Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Nissan Xterra is moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are typically average for a mid-size SUV. Fuel economy is below average, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate, although some repairs, like timing chain or differential work, can be expensive. Parts availability is generally good. Preventative maintenance is crucial to avoid major repairs and extend the vehicle's life. While not the most economical choice, its durability can offset some of the higher running costs, especially if properly maintained.

2009 Nissan Xterra Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Nissan Xterra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Nissan Xterra Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Nissan Xterra competed with vehicles like the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Liberty. Compared to the FJ Cruiser, the Xterra offered a slightly more practical interior and lower price point, but lacked the FJ's iconic styling and off-road prowess out of the box. Against the Jeep Wrangler, the Xterra provided a more comfortable on-road experience and a less polarizing design, but the Wrangler excelled in extreme off-road conditions. The Jeep Liberty was less rugged and capable off-road than the Xterra.

In terms of reliability, the Xterra is generally considered reliable, though not quite as bulletproof as the Toyota. Feature-wise, the Xterra offered a good balance of practicality and affordability for its time.

Similar alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner (older models), which offers similar ruggedness and better reliability, but at a higher price point, or a newer Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, which provides a more modern interior and features but may not match the Xterra's raw off-road capability for the price. For those prioritizing extreme off-road ability, a Jeep Wrangler remains the top choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Nissan Xterra a Good Wagon?

The 2009 Nissan Xterra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable and reliable SUV for occasional off-road adventures and daily driving. It's a good choice for those who prioritize ruggedness and utility over luxury and fuel efficiency. It is worth buying used, *if* you find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history and *after* a thorough inspection for rust and potential transmission issues (SMOD).

The PRO-4X trim is the most desirable for off-road enthusiasts, but even a well-maintained S or SE trim can offer great value. Avoid examples with significant rust or signs of neglect. Overall, the 2009 Xterra offers a compelling blend of capability, reliability, and affordability for the right buyer.

Most reliable and versatile car I've ever owned

This vehicle is endlessly versatile, reliable and a joy to own. It does everything I require. Great for towing, easy to load, great to drive. Loves bad weather, especially snow. I sure wish Nissan was still making them

Great car and fun too

I have owned this xTerra for 8 years now. It has been one of the best most versatile vehicles I have owned. I have babied it and the mileage is mostly highway miles as I commute 40 miles per day to work. This will be a great car for anyone. Don't overlook it.

Good solid stable vehicle. Looks good, drives good

This SUV handles well. 4x4 works great. I love the fold down seats for using it as a work truck. The back of the seats and the rear of the vehicle is durable and great for tools etc.
