Bought it the first year it was manufactured. had to wait months for it to come in to the Dealer... and it was worth every minute and every dime I paid. Took possession December 1999 and I'm still driving it today November, 2020. Absolutely impossible to believe unless I lived it. The 2000 Model is built on the truck frame so it handles more like a truck than a car which I happen to like in an SUV. Six-cylinder, 301k miles & few minor normal repairs. no improvements suggested. Would buy another If it were still made! No idea what to buy after this. It's too great of a car.

Body on frame. Another important fact the 2000-2004 xterra has the strongest rood you can have in a roll over 12,000 pounds of pressure before it buckles. No other suv can match it. Google it

My 2000 X-Terra XE just turned 200K miles and it is still tight and strong. Repairs so far; recommended services per Mfr. Maint Schedule, all. Cut the rattling heat shields off the stainless exhaust. Aluminum shield welded to a stainless exhaust. Bad idea, good news is the ORIGINAL exhaust is fine at 200k! New rear leaf springs at about 60K, I wrestled with the factory Nerf bars and paint not sticking to them for the first 6 months I owned it then the dealer got tired of repainting them and asked if they could have them Rhino-coated, I agreed and they look and perform great. This was a first model year vehicle that despite the caution of a lot of friends turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I'm so happy I just had it painted and some surface rust repaired and plan to drive it till it melts down. It is the only vehicle that at over a couple of years old everything still works, e-locker, windows locks etc. One complaint, the key fobs both broke at around 50K and were a poor design. All things considered I can live with it (unless there is a Nissan exec reading in which case fix them for me, this was a great review!) also the engine could have used a few more horses (New model has 230, 2000 had 170) and the seats are in need of some padding they are like the racing seats in a cafe car, and with the stiff 4x4 suspension it wears your but out after about 3 hours in the truck. I have since owned a Titan (sucked), and am back at long last to a Jeep. My wife drives the X-terra now and when I mentioned selling it she gave me the wife look. If you have one, keep it, If you are considering one, consider that the price has only gone up less than 2k in 11 years. Buy it.

The 4wd has a nasty habit of making a noise like a lawnmower, and the brakes are prone to rusting out. But still, it's a fun drive and repairs are relatively cheap. Just don't count on it to last forever, but it'll get you there. No overheating, no electrical issues, steering and transmission held up.

I bought this suv used.

I bought this suv used. It overheated and need the head gaskets replaced. This was due to the wrong antifreeze being put in after it was originally sold new. Every Xterra does this and you have to change the complete cooling system and eventually rebuild the top end of the engine to remove all the sludge. After you do that it will run like new, engine wise, and have the power it originally had. I have 275,000+ miles on mine.

All my Nissan have lasted i kept this the longest

I have owned my XTERRA for 20 years and 366,823 miles , it has never left me stranded. It still has original alternator/ AC system engine transmission/fuel pump. The only things I've replaced are the timing belt spark plugs and starter.

Been Pretty Relaible

I bought mine back in 2014 4x4 v6 XE 5 Speed with 172k(nearing 300k now). After blowing a head gasket(my own fault) and having transmission completely rebuilt for the most part it has been pretty reliable with the exception of the annoying check engine light constantly being on and the ABS light as well. Truck still ruins great so I just have gotten used to both being on. Everything was replaced when I rebuilt the top end after the blown head gasket, even went with a brand new Distributor and OEM injectors. Truck still runs pretty decent gas mileage not great (avg 15-16) still better than the 98 Explorer I had before. Just had to replace gear box and the clutch rattles. I do a lot of highway driving for my job and it does pretty well on cruise control( switch in awkward spot) Mine does very well in the winter snows as well even if not in 4WD. Sadly am going to have to get rid off here soon and upgrade to something with a bit better gas mileage. I highly recommend this vehcile if looking for a nice reliable off road utility vehicle.

Most reliable first car

It is a very reliable inexpensive car that is perfect for a young owner. Not much maintenance needed. It may be an old car but it still has lots of life.

This particular Xterra just had a lot of problems the dealer didn't disclose. I'm sure this is not the case for all Xterra's. But it is comfortable.

Wish I could add pictures ~ we're still so proud of this XTerra! Our true-2W-6-Y2K?LOL, remember that term?XTerra has lived in both NM-city & NY-country over 19 years/350,000 miles. Externally, NM sunshine caused damage to hood & roof paint; NY winters/salt left rust on the hatch...all tended to. This was 1st XTerra special ordered in NM as 1999 birthday present, and I wanted NON-electric as I feared going into water (in NY, teehee)...sunroof even tho' it's kinda worthless with the basket above...and dog enclosure?even still has its ?vehicle of the year? award sticker on backside of visor! We never had original size/type replacement tires because they slipped too much as with any vehicle light in rear in rain/snow. Most recently the ABS light no longer stays out, and had to go thru' rigmarole to figure out why check-engine light kept coming on. Seems to have been related to distributor replacement not done right, but no mechanic knows for sure. We just replaced front seat belts only because webbing had frayed...still mechanically sound ~ and also the hatch lifters. Both this vehicle & '87 our Stanza wagon had engines replaced sometime after passing about 250,000 miles. In our situation, this was partly caused by husband going off to military zones after 2003 war broke out, and not having enough drivers for all our vehicles for 7� years...sitting too much. We still have all five vehicles we bought new thru' 30 years except for a 2004 Prius that was totaled in an accident. Our XTerra came with the gray upholstery which is still in awesome condition throughout except for dime-size wear-hole under position of driver's left hip, which I haven't figured out how to properly patch yet. We did lose some of those pop-fasteners out of the way-back, but have also replaced them. Obviously, every vehicle needs replacements & repairs periodically; our XTerra has had everything called for, but not given us any surprise breakdowns...even when a hose some mechanic forgot to clamp on came loose, the XTerra kept "bucking" down a busy street until I could get it into a parking lot...and that was my scariest adventure with it ~ :�D The only reason I can't recommend it to friends is that they nearly all drive pickups...and in winter conditions.

2000 Nissan Xterra 4 x 4 automatic 3 3

2000 Nissan Xterra 3.3 V6 automatic 4 by 4 is without a doubt the baddest meanest 6-cylinder I've ever drove for off road only thing I've done to it was install a cold air induction on the throttle body and it is a monster off-road and on-road handling is Superior so anything else I've ever driven as far as SUV 4 x 4 and as well as the 6th we three motor and the gear ratio of the rear ends and transmission the drivetrain in general has the capability reaching speeds of excess 120 miles an hour while producing on 31 inch tires mounted on the factory 15 inch steel rims no lift needed. All I can say is good job Nissan the year 2000 Nissan Xterra was and is one awesome ride
