Rating: 4.35
Based on 31 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Nissan Xterra is a rugged, truck-based SUV built for off-road adventures. Produced from 2000 to 2015 (with this generation running from 2005-2015), it boasts a distinctive boxy body style. Key trims include the base X, the SE, and the off-road focused Off-Road/PRO-4X. When new, prices ranged from around $21,000 to $28,000. Its popularity stems from its genuine off-road capability, durable construction, and relatively affordable price point.
The Good

The 2008 Xterra offers strong performance thanks to its powerful V6 engine, appealing to those seeking adventure. Its solid reliability provides peace of mind for practical buyers. The distinctive, rugged design gives it a unique personality. While not the most fuel-efficient, its value proposition makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious adventurers.

The Bad

The 2008 Nissan Xterra's weaknesses include relatively poor fuel economy compared to more modern SUVs. The interior, while functional, can feel dated and plasticky. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission cooler failing, potentially leading to transmission damage. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates, especially on the frame.

What Problems Does the 2008 Nissan Xterra Have?

The 2008 Nissan Xterra, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One common concern is the automatic transmission cooler failing, which can lead to coolant mixing with transmission fluid and causing significant transmission damage. This issue is more prevalent in earlier model years (2005-2007) but can still occur in the 2008 model. It's crucial to inspect the transmission fluid regularly and consider installing an aftermarket transmission cooler. Another area of concern is potential rust, especially on the frame, particularly in areas with road salt use during winter. Thoroughly inspect the frame for rust before purchasing a used Xterra, especially if it's from a northern state. Some owners have reported issues with the timing chain tensioner, which can cause engine noise and potentially lead to more serious engine problems if not addressed. Recalls have been issued for various issues over the Xterra's production run, so checking the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is essential to ensure all recall repairs have been performed. Long-term reliability is generally good if the vehicle is well-maintained, but addressing these potential issues proactively can help prevent costly repairs.

How long will the 2008 Nissan Xterra last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Nissan Xterra can easily exceed 200,000 miles or provide 15+ years of service. Regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), transmission fluid flushes, and addressing potential rust issues are crucial for long-term durability. The VQ40DE engine is generally robust, but the timing chain tensioner should be monitored. The automatic transmission, while durable, benefits from regular servicing. Weaknesses over time include potential rust on the frame, particularly in regions with harsh winters. The interior plastics may also show wear and tear with age. Properly maintained, these vehicles can be dependable for many years.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Nissan Xterra's tech and safety features are fairly basic compared to modern vehicles. Entertainment features typically include a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might offer an upgraded audio system with satellite radio capability. Driver-assistance features are limited, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and front and side airbags. Some trims may offer side curtain airbags for enhanced protection. Optional features could include a Rockford Fosgate audio system and a rearview camera. The 2008 Nissan Xterra received decent crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), though specific ratings may vary depending on the test and body style (2WD vs. 4WD). Keep in mind that safety technology has significantly advanced since 2008, so comparing it to modern vehicles reveals a considerable gap. The emphasis was more on basic safety and ruggedness rather than advanced technology. The PRO-4X trim prioritized off-road features over advanced technology. Some models include a built-in first aid kit.

2008 Nissan Xterra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Nissan Xterra ranged from around $21,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Xterra has depreciated significantly over time, but its resale value is bolstered by its reputation for reliability and off-road capability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level (PRO-4X models generally command a higher price). Lower mileage examples in excellent condition fetch the highest prices. Models with extensive modifications for off-roading may also command a premium, depending on the quality of the modifications.

2008 Nissan Xterra Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Nissan Xterra is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are generally average for an SUV of its size. Fuel costs can be high due to its relatively poor fuel economy. Maintenance costs are typically manageable, with readily available parts. However, potential repairs like transmission issues or rust remediation can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. While not the most economical vehicle, its reliability can help mitigate some expenses if preventative maintenance is prioritized. Budget accordingly for fuel and potential repairs.

2008 Nissan Xterra Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Nissan Xterra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Nissan Xterra Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Nissan Xterra competed with vehicles like the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Liberty. Compared to the FJ Cruiser, the Xterra offered slightly better fuel economy and a more practical interior, although the FJ Cruiser boasted superior off-road prowess and a more iconic design. Against the Jeep Wrangler, the Xterra provided a more comfortable on-road experience, but the Wrangler offered unmatched open-air capabilities. The Jeep Liberty was less rugged and less capable off-road than the Xterra. In terms of reliability, the Xterra is generally comparable to the Toyota and Jeep models. Pricewise, the Xterra was often more affordable than the FJ Cruiser and similar to the Jeep Liberty. If off-road capability is paramount, the FJ Cruiser or Wrangler might be better choices. For a blend of practicality, reliability, and off-road readiness at a reasonable price, the Xterra is a solid option. Another similar alternative would be a used Toyota 4Runner from the same era, known for its reliability but potentially more expensive.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Nissan Xterra a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Nissan Xterra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable and reliable SUV for occasional off-road adventures. It's a worthwhile buy if you prioritize function over frills and are prepared for slightly higher fuel costs. Buying used is the only option now, and a well-maintained example with a clean service history is crucial. Look for models with minimal rust, particularly on the frame. The PRO-4X trim is highly desirable for its off-road enhancements, but even a standard Xterra can be a competent adventure vehicle. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is strongly recommended to assess potential issues like transmission cooler failure or timing chain wear.

My most favorite vehicle

Have a new Subaru Outback, but much prefer driving the xterra. Would own a new one, if still in production. Great feeling ride, never any major problems. Replaced a few recall items, but never left stranded anywhere!

Great car for high school and college

I got this vehicle while I was in college. It was a wonderful vehicle for that time in my life. It is not a good car to put a car seat in because of the way the back doors are designed. Great vehicle overall!

Rugged, Dependable SUV

Rugged SUV that I have used off road, in snow, pulling my boat, carrying 2 kayaks, family, and dogs. Has never let me down. Stable in snow, absorbs road foods and potholes like a champ. Nothing luxurious about it. All business, the business of fun!

This Car really meet all of my needs. I’m not really much of a tech guy in vehicles and this car was just for me and it is an SUV perfect for my person preference. Sitting high up in comfortable adjustable seats was a dream with that beefy 4.0 V6 under the hood I couldn’t ask for more
