2010 Nissan Xterra Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.18
Based on 29 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Nissan Xterra is a rugged and capable SUV known for its off-road prowess and utilitarian design. Born from Nissan's heritage of durable trucks, the Xterra, in its second generation (2005-2015), offered a boxy, truck-like body style. Key trims included the base X, S, SE, Off-Road, and PRO-4X. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000. Its popularity stemmed from its affordability, dependability and focus on adventure, making it a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2010 Nissan Xterra provides strong off-road performance and good reliability. Its rugged design and ample cargo space appeal to adventurous buyers, while its solid build quality and relatively low cost of ownership satisfy practical needs. The powerful V6 engine gives confidence, although fuel efficiency is not its strong suit. It presents a compelling value for those seeking a capable and dependable SUV.

The Bad

The 2010 Nissan Xterra has some known weaknesses. Fuel economy is below average for its class. The interior, while durable, can feel basic and lacks some modern amenities. Watch out for potential rust issues, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Suspension components and differential issues have also been reported. The relatively stiff ride may not suit everyone.

What Problems Does the 2010 Nissan Xterra Have?

The 2010 Nissan Xterra, like other model years in its generation, has some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. Rust is a prevalent issue, particularly in regions that use road salt during winter. This can affect the frame, body panels, and undercarriage components.
Another common issue involves the SMOD (Strawberry Milkshake of Death) which can occur in the automatic transmission due to a radiator defect causing coolant to mix with transmission fluid. This can lead to catastrophic transmission failure. Although most prevalent in earlier models, it’s wise to inspect the radiator and transmission fluid regularly.
Other reported issues include: potential timing chain issues (though less common than in earlier VQ40DE engines), differential problems (especially in the rear), and premature wear of suspension components, such as ball joints and bushings. Electrical issues, while less frequent, can also occur.
Recalls for the 2010 Xterra have been issued for various reasons, including potential fuel sensor issues. Checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls is highly recommended before purchasing a used 2010 Xterra.

How long will the 2010 Nissan Xterra last?

With regular maintenance, a 2010 Nissan Xterra can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mark, with some reaching 300,000+ miles. The VQ40DE engine is generally robust, but consistent oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles) are crucial for longevity. Properly maintaining the cooling system and transmission (including fluid changes) is essential to prevent SMOD and transmission failure. The long-term durability hinges on addressing rust proactively and replacing worn suspension components as needed. Weaknesses over time include rust, potential SMOD issues if preventative measures aren't taken, and wear of suspension and steering parts.

Negative Owner Reviews
Does it Inspire
I have been shopping for a new Xterra to replace my 2004. Fortunately, this 2010 model (and everything beyond my 2004) offers a bigger powerplant and more horse power. After extensive online research over the past 6 months, I mapped out and recently visited 13 (across 4 States) dealerships, where I test drove 20 Xterras (2009 and 2010). I loved the exterior styling, and alot of improvements over the previous models. However, the one glaring issue is the cheap interior...really cheap. EVERY vehicle I viewed had extensive scratches on the interior. Whatever material Nissan is using for the entire interior plastic is garbage. Every vehicle that I drove (100%) had interior scratches. Alot of them. Each scratch probably tells a tale, like one from the jacket you have with a metal button on the sleeve that rubbed the door, or the time you dropped your keys onto the center console, etc. The point is, it appeared as though it didn't take much to completely wreck the interior. Initially I thought it was just people who didn't care about their Xterras, as I care about my older model. I have decided against buying a new Xterra and will be looking at other competitors. I can not say I am sad, as my 2004 has seen it's share of work at the dealership. I was hoping for better results with a newer model, but if the interior material speaks to the quality of the overall vehicle, it's a good decision to stay away.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Nissan Xterra's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by modern standards. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims, like the PRO-4X, offered an upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer. Navigation was available as an option on some trims.
Driver-assistance features were limited, with ABS and stability control (Vehicle Dynamic Control - VDC) being standard. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.
Safety features included front airbags, side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (VDC) were also standard. Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist were included on the PRO-4X model for enhanced off-road capability.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be reviewed for specific ratings. The Xterra generally performed acceptably in crash tests for its class and era, but specific ratings can vary. Checking these ratings is crucial for assessing the vehicle's overall safety performance.

2010 Nissan Xterra Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Nissan Xterra had a starting MSRP of around $23,000, with higher trims like the PRO-4X reaching around $30,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Xterra has depreciated significantly, but its resale value is relatively strong compared to other SUVs due to its off-road capability and reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, rust presence, and overall condition. Models with lower mileage and minimal rust command higher prices. The PRO-4X trim generally holds its value better than other trims.

2010 Nissan Xterra Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Nissan Xterra's ownership costs can be moderate. Insurance premiums are generally average for an SUV of its size. Fuel economy is below average, leading to higher fuel costs. Maintenance costs are reasonable, with readily available parts. However, potential repairs related to rust, transmission (SMOD), and suspension can increase long-term ownership costs. While not the most economical vehicle to own due to fuel consumption, its reliability can help mitigate repair expenses if properly maintained.

2010 Nissan Xterra Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Nissan Xterra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Nissan Xterra Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2010 Nissan Xterra competed against vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota FJ Cruiser, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of off-road performance, the Xterra held its own against the FJ Cruiser and offered a more refined on-road experience than the Wrangler. The 4Runner, however, offered a more spacious interior and a longer track record of reliability, but at a higher price point. Feature-wise, the Xterra was relatively basic compared to some competitors, particularly in terms of technology and comfort. Reliability was generally good, but the potential for SMOD and rust were concerns not always present in rivals like the 4Runner.
In terms of price, the Xterra was often more affordable than the 4Runner, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. If off-road capability is a priority and budget is a concern, the Xterra is a solid choice. However, if greater reliability and more features are desired, the Toyota 4Runner, while more expensive, may be a better alternative. A Jeep Wrangler offers unmatched off-road prowess but sacrifices on-road comfort and refinement.
Similar alternatives include the Nissan Pathfinder (for a more family-oriented SUV) or the Jeep Liberty (for a more budget-friendly, albeit less capable, off-roader).

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Nissan Xterra a Good Wagon?

The 2010 Nissan Xterra is ideal for adventurous individuals or small families seeking a capable and affordable off-road SUV. It's worth buying used if you prioritize off-road performance and ruggedness over luxury and fuel efficiency. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial, particularly checking for rust and evidence of SMOD prevention (radiator replacement). The PRO-4X trim is desirable for its enhanced off-road features, but any well-maintained Xterra can provide years of reliable service. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of neglect. If a reliable and affordable off-roader is what you need, the 2010 Xterra is a solid choice.

The Xterra is the orange sherbert of SUVs

Yes, I said orange sherbert but hear me out! In the world of SUVs names like Jeep, Bronco, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser reign supreme. They're all pretty reliable, good price depreciation, and fun to drive...but i would argue the Xterra should at least be in the conversation. The Xterra is a great vehicle. It runs on the uber reliable and powerful Nissan 261hp 4.0 liter engine. Parts are pretty cheap. Its easy to work on. It's got great space and has got great mods available for it. It was basically built for fun. The design is boxy and outdated but also unique. I think if you can get past the name and not following the trend you'll likley be happy with this faithful companion. Yes its great to have Vanilla, Chocolate, and strawberry flavors but those get old after a while. The Xterra is fun, just like Orange Sherbert. you're not winning any michelin stars with it but you are guaranteed to have a good time.

Mechanically a Great Vehicle !!

Only had to change one left wheel bearing at 105K, only had one small issue regarding the Clock Spring part in the steering wheel which controls the cruise control, airbag, and horn at 115K, that part is 350 plus labor so putting it off for now until inspection time since horn must work .

Does exactly what it was designed to do.

I use vehicles as tools. I like the Xterra because it functions as designed. The benefits in design for off road and all weather travel have a cost; primarily gas mileage, and to a certain extent comfort. These trade-offs are not unique to the Xterra. The exterior design is attractive as well as utilitarian (although the front plastic bumper is far too week for off road, replaced two in three years, bought a brush guard, and then a reinforced off road bumper). The inside designed is plastic and looks cheap. But the modular plastic aspect of the interior is an advantage as I have modified the dash to mount AM/FM, CB, and short wave radios. Running antenna wire was not an issue with minimal drilling and some fire calking to preserve design integrity. The front seats are as comfortable as you will find in a real off road vehicle. The back seats are for short trips only. Three hours back there is enough. The storage space is not overly large but it is usable. The fold down back seats make up for this. I like to keep one back seat as a "jump seat" if needed. The hard plastic flooring makes for lots of load sliding unless you use tie downs (adjustable tiedown points provided in the design) or install a rubber mat insert. I like the availability of after market additions like dash parts, exterior light set, and off road upgrades. Without too much modification (or cost) I have put together a tough little mudder that is capable and reliable. I can camp out of for a week (a 6' man can lay out in the back if need be) I can crawl, commute, and communicate across several states with ease but this rig does not look like I'm getting ready for the apocalypse. Fold down antennas help reduce the "preper" profiling from neighbors and county police. I like that I can get off road as well as travel cross county in relative comfort. This is a good looking and capable vehicle that offers better comfort than other comparable off road offerings. The fuel efficiency is a real consideration but is worth it if you actually go off road. The interior looks cheap but is modular and can be easily customized. I bought it to do what it was designed to do. I really like the design and the flexibility of the Xterra. If you take care of this vehicle, it will take care of you. I live on the plains but drive to (and in) the mountains.

Been an extremely reliable SUV

So far I've never had a problem with the vehicle! I made sure all recalls we're done so it's up to date. Or has enough power to move in traffic and it drives very well
