The Good
The 2012 Nissan Xterra's advantages lie in its strong performance, especially off-road, and solid reliability. Its rugged design and utilitarian focus appeal to adventure-seeking buyers. While not the most comfortable, it offers decent practicality and represents a good value proposition, especially on the used market. The powerful V6 engine provides ample power for towing and tackling tough terrain.
The Bad
Known weaknesses of the 2012 Nissan Xterra include its subpar fuel economy compared to other SUVs. The interior is fairly basic and lacks some of the refinement of its competitors. Ride comfort can be stiff, especially on rough roads. Watch for rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters, and be aware of potential timing chain issues in the V6 engine.

What Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Xterra Have?
Some owners have reported issues with the fuel sending unit, leading to inaccurate fuel gauge readings. Check engine lights related to emissions systems are also relatively common. There have been recalls on some Xterra models for various issues, including potential fuel leaks and airbag malfunctions; check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to the VIN. The 2012 model year doesn't have significantly different issues compared to other years within the second generation, but regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate potential problems and ensure long-term reliability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are minimal; it lacks advanced safety systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and front and side airbags. The PRO-4X trim includes hill descent control.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA vary. The NHTSA gave the 2012 Xterra four out of five stars for overall safety. The IIHS gave it "Good" ratings in some categories but "Marginal" in the roof strength test. Given the age of the vehicle, these ratings should be considered relative to other vehicles of similar vintage rather than current standards. Overall, the Xterra prioritizes ruggedness and off-road capability over cutting-edge technology.

How Does the 2012 Nissan Xterra Compare to Other Wagon?
In terms of reliability, the Xterra is generally comparable to the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, while the Wrangler has a more mixed reputation. Feature-wise, the Xterra is more basic than some competitors, lacking some of the modern conveniences found in the 4Runner. Price-wise, the Xterra often represents a better value on the used market.
Alternatives include the Jeep Grand Cherokee for those prioritizing comfort and features, or the Toyota Tacoma if a pickup truck format is acceptable. If maximum off-road capability is the primary concern and budget allows, the 4Runner is the better choice, but for a balance of off-road ability, practicality, and value, the Xterra remains a compelling option.

Camping and hauling XterrasI have had two xterras and have never found a better SUV for camping and going to the home stores to haul lumber and household goods for my home projects... they are hardy and reliable to own and are 20 year vehicles.

Awesome VehicleThis vehicle meets all my needs. I had a truck for 19 years and bought this one with only 7300 miles on it in 2015. Meets my purpose hauling my dog, groceries, home repairs, trips, tv's, etc. I'm a single senior female that does a lot of home repairs and it hauls everything I've put in it including a 70"TV. I have all oil changes made every 6 months and today 12-2020 only has 25,000 miles on it. Replaced 2 tires due to nails but it drives beautifully. Added outside black vinyl strips and black window guards and whitewall tires all for looks. Love the power getting on and off freeways. Always had a standard transmission before but do love the automatic transmission on this one. Seats could have been more comfortable, but at my 5'9" frame, they will do. Not looking for frills, just regular car use for a senior that goes only to Bingo and shopping. Love it.

Love it!Better car than the Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Pro-4X is the top of the line Xterra and is available with leather seats, premium stereo, trailer hitch, skid plates, Bilstein gas-filled shocks, locking rear differential, hill descent assist, side bars, a cargo cover, roof mounted off-road lights, and other features.

Most reliable car I've ownedThis vehicle suits my lifestyle. I can tow my trailer/kayaks. It has the ability to tow much heavier loads. It's a beast in the New England snow and when I ski up north. It has a durable interior and exterior so you don't have to baby it. Perfect for an active lifestyle
