Rating: 4.38

The 2007 Nissan Xterra is a rugged, truck-based SUV designed for off-road adventures. Part of the second generation (2005-2015), it boasts a distinctive body-on-frame construction. Key trims included the X, S, SE, Off-Road, and SE. Original pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $28,000. Its boxy design, standard V6 engine, and focus on utility made it a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2007 Xterra offered solid performance with its V6 engine and capable 4x4 system. Its rugged design and off-road prowess appealed to adventurous buyers. Practical benefits included ample cargo space, decent reliability, and a relatively affordable price point for a capable SUV. It's a fun, functional, and relatively reliable choice.

The Bad

The 2007 Nissan Xterra's weaknesses include relatively poor fuel economy. The interior, while durable, can feel dated. Some owners have reported issues with the timing chain tensioners. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with salted roads. The turning radius is also not the best for city driving.

What Problems Does the 2007 Nissan Xterra Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2007 Nissan Xterra include issues with the timing chain tensioners, which can lead to premature engine wear or failure if not addressed. Some owners have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with rough shifting or slipping. Rust, especially on the undercarriage and frame, is a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winter conditions and road salt use.
Recalls for the 2007 Xterra included issues related to fuel tank welds and potential fuel leakage, as well as concerns about the front suspension lower link potentially detaching due to corrosion.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the aforementioned timing chain issue and rust prevention. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and undercarriage washing, is crucial for mitigating these problems. Additionally, checking for and addressing any signs of rust early can help prolong the vehicle's lifespan. Some owners have also reported issues with the radiator and transmission cooler mixing fluids, leading to transmission failure. Addressing this potential problem with an aftermarket cooler may be considered by some owners.

How long will the 2007 Nissan Xterra last?

A well-maintained 2007 Nissan Xterra can reasonably achieve 200,000 miles or more. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing issues promptly, significantly impacts longevity.
However, lack of maintenance or neglect can drastically shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses over time include potential timing chain issues, rust development (especially in colder climates), and wear and tear on suspension components. These factors, coupled with driving habits, influence the vehicle's long-term durability. Preventative maintenance is key to exceeding average expectations.

I purchased this Nissan Xterra August 2007. I have driven this car up mountains and for long hauls. Great vehicle. In fact my son has been driving it now for the past 4 years and it made it through his med school and residency, now has over 300 miles and still truckin. I wish they still made this vehicle as I would love to buy another one brand new. I love the room it has and you sit up high so you feel secure. One time a old man ran into me and the back bumper didn't even budge & the olf man's small Ford truck's front end was smashed in. Very safe vehicle to be in. I would advise they made some more.

Have had the same items replace several times over the past 8 years. Poor gas mileage, not reliable. Expensive repairs lead to dissatisfaction. The past 8 years spent about 15K in repairs...could have bought new car. Now having same issue for the third time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Nissan Xterra's built-in tech and entertainment were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included a CD player with AM/FM radio. Higher trims offered upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio systems with subwoofers. Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) on some trims.
Safety features included front airbags and side-impact airbags. Optional features included a sunroof and roof rack.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally showed good performance in frontal and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Xterra generally good ratings, although specific ratings may vary depending on the year and test criteria. More advanced driver-assistance technologies like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available on this model. It's important to verify the presence of specific safety features on the particular vehicle being considered.

2007 Nissan Xterra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Nissan Xterra ranged from approximately $21,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location.
The Xterra has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (rust-free examples command a premium), service history, and trim level. Models with the Off-Road package tend to hold their value slightly better due to their enhanced capabilities and desirability among off-road enthusiasts.

2007 Nissan Xterra Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Nissan Xterra is generally moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for an SUV of its size. Fuel economy is poor, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance can be moderate if regular preventative measures are taken. Repairs can become expensive if major components like the timing chain or transmission fail. While not the most economical, the Xterra offers decent value considering its capabilities if you find a well-maintained one. Rust prevention is key to controlling long-term repair expenses.

2007 Nissan Xterra Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Nissan Xterra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Nissan Xterra Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Nissan Xterra's key rivals included the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Compared to the FJ Cruiser, the Xterra offered a slightly more practical interior and a less polarizing design, though the FJ arguably had superior off-road prowess. Against the Jeep Wrangler, the Xterra provided a more comfortable on-road experience and better fuel economy, but lacked the Wrangler's open-air experience and ultimate off-road capabilities. The Suzuki Grand Vitara was generally more affordable but lacked the Xterra's power and ruggedness.
In terms of reliability, the Xterra is generally considered comparable to its rivals, although as mentioned before, the timing chain can be problematic.
Alternatives to the Xterra, depending on the buyer's needs, could include a newer Jeep Cherokee (for a more modern and refined experience), a Toyota 4Runner (for legendary reliability and off-road capability, but at a higher price point), or a used Lexus GX 470 (for luxury and off-road capability).

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Nissan Xterra a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Nissan Xterra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable and rugged SUV for off-road adventures and light-duty hauling. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history and minimal rust. The Off-Road trim is particularly desirable for its enhanced off-road features.
However, be prepared for relatively poor fuel economy and potential maintenance costs associated with an older vehicle. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to assess the condition of the timing chain, transmission, and frame for rust. If those checks pass, you will be getting a solid vehicle.

still kickin

I got mine used in 2012 with about 45k on it. Last year I crossed 100k miles. A few months after I got it, a cab rear-ended me in downtown Nashville; I needed a new bumper, but he needed a new cab. More recently, I was driving down a highway in IL when some deer ran across the road. I had nowhere to go, so I slowed down, but I couldn't avoid the last one. The front end took some damage; I drove it for a week before I could get it to the shop. $3500 dollars later, it's back to a more normal appearance (insurance covered most of it). So, from a safety standpoint, I feel pretty good about this vehicle. I have had a couple of minor issues -- the tire sensor went out a long time ago. The fuel gauge works intermittently, so I have to watch the trip meter. And there is some problem with a battery cable -- somewhere; if the battery holder is loose, the battery doesn't charge. But I pushed the battery back, tightened the clamp, and I haven't had any more problems -- but I am still wondering what happened. It's the only reason I consider buying another car (I don't like getting stranded for any reason).

Nissan Xterra '07

I used to own this vehicle. It was my first. It went for over 175k miles AND still continues to go (not owned by me but driven by a friend). It rarely had issues (I wasn't the kindest to it -i was young). It's mpg is not that great but it can haul just about anything and has plenty of space. If you need a reliable car xterras are that. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore

235,000 miles

This has been the best vehicle I ever bought. I bought mine used in 2009 with 60K miles. I used it as a my daily vehicle for 8 years, now my high school son uses it as his. Its still running well, although it does show signs of wear and tear. Had to replace the transmission at 160K back in 2013. Put a refurbed one in for $3500. 6 years and 75K miles later, its still working. I am going to hang onto it for as long as I can and as long as I dont have any major repairs, hoping to hit 300K. Fingers crossed! I have a wrangler now, but I miss the Xterra. Wish Nissan still made them.

Bought used

On the whole I like it. I only have two gripes but they’re well within reason when buying a 12 year old used car. 1: differential whine at highway speeds, and 2: for no foreseeable reason the rear hatch won’t open anymore. Opened at the dealer, and when we got home but then m wife slammed it shut and now nothin. Those two small things aside I couldn’t be happier.
