Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2008 BMW X6 marked the debut of a unique concept: the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC). This daring blend of SUV practicality and coupe-like styling created a niche of its own. The first generation X6 (E71) was produced from 2008 to 2014. Key trims included the xDrive35i and xDrive50i. When new, prices ranged from approximately $53,000 to $65,000. Its bold design and powerful engines, coupled with BMW's driving dynamics, made it a popular choice for those seeking a distinctive vehicle.
The Good

The 2008 BMW X6 offers strong performance from its turbocharged engines, providing engaging driving dynamics. The comfortable and luxurious interior appeals to those seeking refinement. Its unique design makes a statement. For practical buyers, it offers decent cargo space and all-wheel drive capability, blending sportiness and utility.

The Bad

The 2008 BMW X6's sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and cargo space compared to traditional SUVs. Reliability can be a concern, with potential issues related to the turbocharger, cooling system, and electrical components. Maintenance and repair costs can be high, impacting long-term ownership expenses.

What Problems Does the 2008 BMW X6 Have?

The 2008 BMW X6 has faced several frequently reported problems. Turbocharger issues, including oil leaks and failures, are common, particularly on the xDrive50i model. Cooling system problems, such as coolant leaks from the water pump, thermostat housing, and radiator, are also prevalent. Electrical issues, including problems with the iDrive system, sensors, and wiring harnesses, have been reported.
Recalls for the 2008 X6 included issues with the fuel pump and potential problems with the front driveshaft. Owners should check the NHTSA website for a comprehensive list of recalls and ensure all necessary repairs have been performed.
Long-term reliability can be a concern. The complex systems, including the turbochargers and electronics, are prone to failure with age and mileage. Oil leaks, particularly from valve cover gaskets and oil filter housings, are common. Suspension components, such as control arms and bushings, may also require replacement over time. Proper maintenance and regular inspections are crucial to mitigate these issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Furthermore, ensure the battery is properly maintained, as electrical gremlins can be common in older BMW models.

How long will the 2008 BMW X6 last?

A well-maintained 2008 BMW X6 can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance and timely repairs. Given their age, most 2008 X6 models will have accumulated significant mileage. Regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and transmission services are vital. Long-term durability is often compromised by oil leaks, turbocharger issues (especially in the xDrive50i), and cooling system failures. Suspension components and electrical systems are also prone to wear and tear, potentially leading to costly repairs over time. Neglecting these areas will significantly shorten the vehicle’s lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 BMW X6 came equipped with a range of standard and optional tech and safety features. Standard features included BMW's iDrive system for controlling audio, navigation, and vehicle settings. Entertainment features included a premium sound system (often optional), CD player, and auxiliary input.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but options included parking sensors, a rearview camera, and adaptive headlights. Safety features included anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. Optional safety features included lane departure warning and active cruise control.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA should be consulted for specific details. While the X6 included standard safety equipment, its unique design might have impacted certain crash test results compared to traditional SUVs. The iDrive system, while innovative for its time, can feel dated compared to current infotainment systems. Its functionality can also be impacted by age and potential software glitches. Many of the available driver assistance features were cutting-edge at the time but are now considered commonplace in newer vehicles. The base sound system was adequate, but the upgraded premium sound system significantly enhanced the audio experience.

2008 BMW X6 Prices and Market Value

The 2008 BMW X6 had a starting MSRP of around $53,000 for the xDrive35i and $65,000 for the xDrive50i when new. Current used market prices range from approximately $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The X6 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, maintenance costs, and reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, service history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage, documented maintenance, and fewer reported problems tend to command higher prices. The xDrive50i, while offering more power, may depreciate more due to higher running costs and potential maintenance issues.

2008 BMW X6 Cost of Ownership

The 2008 BMW X6 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the xDrive50i. Maintenance and repair expenses are significant, with potential issues related to the turbochargers, cooling system, and electrical components. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial due to the vehicle's age and the potential for expensive repairs. It's not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2008 BMW X6 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 BMW X6 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 BMW X6 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 BMW X6 competed with other luxury SUVs and crossovers like the Acura MDX, Infiniti FX, and Mercedes-Benz ML-Class. In terms of performance, the X6 offered a sporty driving experience, particularly with the xDrive50i, but its handling was not necessarily superior to all rivals. Features were comparable to other luxury vehicles of the time. However, the X6's unique styling compromised practicality compared to the more traditionally shaped MDX and ML-Class. Reliability is a significant concern compared to the Acura MDX, which is known for its dependability. The Infiniti FX offered a similar blend of sportiness and style but may also suffer from reliability issues. The Mercedes-Benz ML-Class offered a more comfortable ride and a more spacious interior.
Given the age and potential reliability concerns, alternatives like a newer, more reliable Acura MDX or Lexus RX might be better choices for practical buyers. If a sporty driving experience is paramount, a well-maintained Infiniti FX might be considered, but buyers should be aware of potential reliability issues. Ultimately, the X6's unique design is its primary selling point, but buyers should carefully weigh the potential ownership costs and reliability risks.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 BMW X6 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 BMW X6 is ideal for buyers who prioritize unique styling and a sporty driving experience over practicality and reliability. It's worth considering *only* if purchased at a low price and with a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic. A well-maintained xDrive35i might be a slightly more sensible choice than the xDrive50i due to potentially lower maintenance costs. However, be prepared for potentially high repair bills and ongoing maintenance expenses. For those seeking a reliable and practical luxury SUV, alternatives like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX are generally better choices. Before buying, factor in high ownership costs and potential repairs.

BMW X6

As a proud owner of BMW products for long time, two e46, 1999, 2003 and one e39 2002. I do recalled the BMW DNA in the X6, yes it is not a sedan or coupe performance but with the limit due to his body style it actually runs very good, the base line of X6 is missing GPS putting the X6 below on what is expected at this price range even for an used one, besides this mistake by BMW, I have no other problem, the 4 seat maybe the other one but since he is marketed as a coupe there is no space for the buyer to cry around in the used car arena. Interior construction and finish are good, I did not like the plastic used in the back door, hard plastic lowers the quality a notch, also the finish of the headliner at the very end rear is visible it appears the gasket falls short for about 5mm to cover the line small details huge difference because with time this may create a way for the hardliner to loose the tide finished.

Great car

I love my X6. I had an X5 for 8 years and recently traded for X6. Great car!! Almost as roomy as the X5 but sportier and has tons of options.
