The 2009 BMW X6 marked BMW's entry into the then-novel "sports activity coupe" (SAC) segment. It combined the silhouette of a coupe with the higher ride height and utility of an SUV. The initial model years ranged from 2008 to 2014 for the first generation. Key trims included the xDrive35i and xDrive50i. Pricing when new ranged from roughly $55,000 to $75,000. Its distinctive styling and blend of performance and practicality made it popular.
The Good

The 2009 BMW X6 offers strong performance from its engine options, a comfortable and luxurious interior, and a striking, unconventional design that appeals to emotional buyers. Practically, it provides decent cargo space for its class, all-wheel drive capability, and a prestigious brand image. However, reliability can be a concern for some models.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 BMW X6 include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury vehicles. Some owners report issues with the complex electronics and suspension components. Oil leaks and cooling system problems can also be a concern, especially as the vehicle ages. The rear headroom is compromised by the sloping roofline.

What Problems Does the 2009 BMW X6 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 BMW X6 often revolve around its complex systems. Oil leaks, particularly from valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets, are common. Cooling system issues, such as water pump failure and coolant leaks, are also reported. Suspension problems, including air suspension malfunctions (if equipped), can occur. Electrical issues, affecting the iDrive system, sensors, and other components, are another area of concern.
Recalls for the 2009 X6 have addressed issues such as fuel pump problems and potential brake vacuum hose failures, which could affect braking performance. Checking the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recalls is crucial. Long-term reliability can be affected by the strain placed on the turbocharged engines, especially if maintenance is neglected. Regular oil changes with high-quality synthetic oil and proactive maintenance of cooling and suspension systems are essential to mitigate potential problems. Some model years within the first generation X6 might exhibit more frequent issues than others, highlighting the importance of thorough inspection before purchase.

How long will the 2009 BMW X6 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 BMW X6 can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 15+ years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent and diligent maintenance. Neglecting recommended service intervals will significantly shorten its lifespan. The turbocharged engines are generally durable but require regular oil changes and attention to cooling system health. Weaknesses over time often involve the suspension components, electronics, and potential oil leaks. The interior materials tend to hold up well, but the leather may show wear with heavy use. Rust is generally not a significant concern, but inspecting for corrosion in areas prone to water accumulation is advisable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 BMW X6 came equipped with a decent array of technology for its time. Standard features included BMW’s iDrive infotainment system (though an earlier version compared to later models), a premium sound system, automatic climate control, and parking sensors.
Optional features included a navigation system, a rearview camera, heated and ventilated front seats, a heads-up display, and adaptive cruise control. Some models also featured a sport package with enhanced suspension and sport seats.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern standards, with adaptive cruise control being a notable option. Safety features included anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) provide insights into the vehicle's safety performance. While specific ratings for the 2009 X6 should be checked, BMWs of this era generally performed well in crash tests. It's always best to consult official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information.

2009 BMW X6 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 BMW X6 ranged from approximately $55,000 to $75,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The X6 has depreciated significantly due to its age, higher maintenance costs associated with luxury vehicles, and the introduction of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable options. Models with lower mileage and a well-documented service history command higher prices. The xDrive50i, with its V8 engine, might retain slightly more value than the xDrive35i, but maintenance costs can also be higher.

2009 BMW X6 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 BMW X6 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and potential repair costs. Fuel consumption, particularly for the xDrive50i, is significant. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially as the vehicle ages, requiring specialized parts and labor. Expect to spend more on upkeep compared to a non-luxury SUV. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs related to its complex systems and turbocharged engines.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 BMW X6 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 BMW X6 competed against SUVs like the Acura MDX, Infiniti FX, and Porsche Cayenne. In terms of performance, the X6 offered a sporty driving experience, especially with the xDrive50i, but the Cayenne provided even sharper handling. Feature-wise, the X6 was competitive, offering similar luxury amenities. However, the Acura MDX excelled in reliability, often outperforming the X6. The Infiniti FX provided a similar blend of sportiness and style but with potentially lower maintenance costs. In terms of price, the X6 was positioned in the higher end of the spectrum.
Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX for better reliability and value, the Infiniti FX for a similar sporty experience with potentially lower running costs, and the Porsche Cayenne for superior performance. The BMW X5, a more traditional SUV from BMW, offered similar features and performance without the X6's compromised rear headroom. The choice depends on individual priorities: if styling and a unique driving experience are paramount, the X6 might be appealing, but if reliability and practicality are higher priorities, the alternatives are worth exploring.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 BMW X6 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 BMW X6 is ideal for buyers who prioritize distinctive styling and a sporty driving experience in an SUV-like package, and who are willing to accept higher running costs. It may be worth buying used if found in good condition with a comprehensive service history. Opting for the xDrive35i might offer slightly better fuel economy and potentially lower maintenance compared to the xDrive50i. However, a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify potential issues. Given its age and potential maintenance needs, it's essential to factor in repair costs when considering its overall value. If reliability is a major concern, exploring alternative models might be a wiser choice.

Get the 35i not the 50i unless you have a warranty

The 35i is a great reliable version of the 50i but still have issues. They are a pleasure to drive and turns heads everywhere. I had to replace the valve cover, valve cover gasket, oil cooler gasket and the oil filter housing gasket immediately after purchasing the car. The dealer wanted $3000 but I did the work myself for $250 in parts. It wasn't an easy job. I still need to replace the leaking turbo oil return line.

BMW x-6 5.0

I just bought one and am loving it more and more each day. At first, i was a little disappointed by the way it drove on the road ( a kidney buster) but now i am totally used to it and it does not bother me. The vehicle is a rocket ship, it handles unbelievably and it really goes. The only complaint i have with bmw is in the i drive. I cannot believe that they have not gone with a touch screen. It is cumbersome and a pain, but i love everything else about the car from the looks and the twin turbos kickin in!

Handles like car, boot like an SUV

Excellent driving vehicle that can take corners like a sports car, has excellent passing acceleration and unique styling. This is tempered by a few trips to the shop for the engine, from which I understand is an issue for other Bimmers using the same 6 cylinder bi-turbo. Interior is nice but austere and after a year of ownership has held up well although the driver's seat may require an upholstery adjustment. Stowage is fantastic and gas mpg is ok for a vehicle this side. If you want unique, this is it.

This car is a dream

Its realy the car everyone will ever dream to have. Once you drive it, you will never want to drive anything else. I had the car since Sept 09, no problems at all. Takes time to learn all the features. Love the flat tires and the handle in the road. Camera in the back is so accurate when backing up althought alarm is anoying but it does it job.
