Rating: 4.30
Based on 83 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2013 BMW X3 is a compact luxury SUV, part of the second generation (F25) which ran from 2011-2017. Key trims include the xDrive28i and xDrive35i. New, prices ranged from around $39,000 to $45,000. It's popular for its blend of BMW's driving dynamics, a comfortable ride, and a practical SUV body style. Its available turbocharged engines and upscale interior are key selling points.
The Good

The 2013 X3 offers a compelling blend of performance and practicality. Emotionally, it provides the engaging driving experience expected from a BMW. Practically, it offers a comfortable and spacious cabin, available all-wheel drive, and reasonable fuel efficiency, especially with the 28i model. Reliability is generally good, though some issues are known. Resale value is also decent.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2013 X3 include potential issues with the timing chain tensioner on earlier N20 engines (xDrive28i), oil leaks, and potential electrical problems. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer models. Repair costs can be higher than non-luxury brands, so a pre-purchase inspection is crucial.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2013 BMW X3 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 BMW X3 often revolve around the engine, particularly the N20 4-cylinder in the xDrive28i. A common issue is the timing chain tensioner, which, if it fails, can cause significant engine damage. Listen for rattling noises upon startup, as this could be a sign of impending failure. Oil leaks are another prevalent concern, often stemming from the valve cover gasket or oil filter housing. These leaks can be messy and, if left unaddressed, can lead to more serious problems.
Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or problems with the iDrive system, have also been reported, although less frequently. Some owners have reported issues with the cooling system, including thermostat and water pump failures. For the 2013 model year specifically, there have been some recalls related to fuel pump issues and potential problems with the brake vacuum pump, which could affect braking performance. Always check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information.
Long-term reliability concerns generally relate to the increased maintenance costs associated with European vehicles. Components like suspension parts and sensors tend to wear out more quickly than on some competitors. Proper and timely maintenance is crucial for mitigating these issues and maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle.

How long will the 2013 BMW X3 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 BMW X3 can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. Longevity depends heavily on consistent oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly. Key weaknesses over time include the aforementioned timing chain issue (especially on the N20 engine), oil leaks, and potential wear and tear on suspension components. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan, while proactive care can extend its usability.
Positive Owner Reviews
ALI
Its so comfortable, fast, sport, low mileage, so clean . It is 2013 with 67k mileage, honestly so clean look like new car .new tire and full service
BMW Fan
So fun to drive, quick acceleration, has enough room for all your stuff, looks great, gets great gas mileage. Very comfortable for long trips too. Can't go wrong with this car.
taniamarcel
BMW quality is not to be argued about. After 500 miles we feel that we bought the right car. It fuel economy for a SUV really surprised us.
Negative Owner Reviews
Texans against BMWs
We bought our BMW X3 from Clay Cooley in Plano Texas. The car had 80,000 miles on it when we bought it. 1st problem was less than a month after purchasing, the turbo went out. Then about 6 months later the engine jumped timing and trashed the engine. I would not advise anyone to buy this car. It is going to cost us over $7,000 to fix the engine.
SHarroun
Do not buy a BMW. Engine died at 70,800 miles due to the timing chain stretching, causing the rail guide to break (plastic) and go into the oil, causing catastrophic engine failure. BMW is charging me $7,706 (covering 35% of the new engine). Dealer serviced and maintained, frequent oil changes, meticulously kept. There are several class-action law suits on this issue. Search for "BMW N20," "BMW engine failure," "BMW timing chain" or related and you'll find all the info you need.
Zawiman
If you can't buy it new then look for something else. Just search on youtube and google N20 problems and noises. First the oil pump chain will start whining, second the Timing chain will make noise people will think it's diesel engine, the plastic expands and start rubbing on the chain causing unwelcome noise, Then On a cold start you will get a little puff of white smoke because either the Turbo oil line valve started leaking or the turbo seal let's oil in the turbo when cold, either way oil will get to the combustion champers and will cause carbon buildup on the valves which will result in the engine shake and the full car will shake when the gear box change gears, you can use injector cleaner in your gas tank to make things better but you will still have a puff of smoke on cold starts, Trying to fix those issues- where to start? Turbo is $1800 , labor to take the engine out and replace the turbo or the oil feed line is $1000 , I didn't check how much it will cost to replace the oil pump chain and the timing chain, but trust me it's not going to be less than $800. I ended up replacing my BMW X3 2013 with 70k miles with a Nissan Altima, I lost $3000 but I would have lost more if I kept the car until it's not drivable. I am not boy racer and I do take care of the service and oil changes on time. I would never buy any BMW with N20 engine.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 BMW X3 comes standard with BMW's iDrive system, which controls various vehicle functions through a central controller and display screen. Standard entertainment features include a premium sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB input. Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to newer models, but available options include a rearview camera (part of the Technology Package) and park distance control.
Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Optional safety features included lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring.
The 2013 BMW X3 received favorable crash-test ratings. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in most categories, and it was named a Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a 4-star overall safety rating. It's worth noting that optional packages added features like adaptive headlights, which improve nighttime visibility.
Even though the technology is dated compared to current offerings, the 2013 X3 provides a solid foundation of safety and entertainment features for its time, with options to enhance both areas.

2013 BMW X3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 BMW X3 ranged from approximately $39,000 for the xDrive28i to $45,000+ for the xDrive35i, depending on options. Current used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a luxury vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, service history, condition (especially interior and exterior), and the presence of desirable options like the Technology or Premium packages. Models with documented maintenance records and in excellent condition command higher prices.

2013 BMW X3 Cost of Ownership

The 2013 BMW X3 is generally more costly to own than non-luxury SUVs. Insurance rates are higher due to its class and repair costs. Fuel costs are reasonable, particularly with the xDrive28i. Maintenance, including scheduled services and potential repairs, can be significant, especially if performed at a BMW dealership. Long-term, expect higher-than-average ownership costs due to the potential for more frequent repairs and specialized parts.

2013 BMW X3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 BMW X3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 BMW X3 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2013 BMW X3 competes with vehicles like the Audi Q5, Acura RDX, and Volvo XC60. In terms of performance, the X3 generally offers a more engaging driving experience than the RDX and XC60, but the Q5 is a close competitor. Feature-wise, the X3 is comparable, although its infotainment system is less intuitive than some rivals.
Reliability is a mixed bag. The Acura RDX is generally considered more reliable. The Audi Q5 can have similar maintenance costs. Price-wise, the X3 sits in a similar range to the Q5 and XC60 in the used market, while the RDX is often slightly more affordable.
Alternatives to consider include the Acura RDX, which offers excellent value and reliability. The Audi Q5 provides a similar luxury experience with potentially higher maintenance costs. The Lexus RX offers superior reliability and a comfortable ride, though less sporty handling. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura RDX or Lexus RX are arguably better choices. If driving dynamics are paramount, the X3 or Q5 are strong contenders.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 BMW X3 a Good Wagon?

The 2013 BMW X3 is ideal for buyers seeking a compact luxury SUV with a sporty driving experience and a comfortable interior. It's worth buying used if you prioritize performance and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection is essential, especially focusing on the timing chain (for xDrive28i) and oil leaks. The xDrive35i offers more power but may be less fuel-efficient. If reliability is a major concern, consider alternatives like the Acura RDX. A well-maintained X3 can be a rewarding vehicle, but potential owners should be prepared for higher ownership costs.

Our vehicle was very well maintained, always getting what it needed when it needed it. Our mechanic even said it was nice to see someone who took great care of there vehicle. Our engine just after 184000KM is done. left my wife sitting on a mountain rd in Nova scotia. No warning . Not impressed.

This is an awesome value

So fun to drive, quick acceleration, has enough room for all your stuff, looks great, gets great gas mileage. Very comfortable for long trips too. Can't go wrong with this car.

Very pleasant car to drive

BMW quality is not to be argued about. After 500 miles we feel that we bought the right car. It fuel economy for a SUV really surprised us.

Top of Class

The X3 is best in class compared to Mercedes or Audi, it is very fun to drive, an IIHS Top Safety Pick and has all sorts of features that are easier to use than its rivals setups.

OUR NINTH BMW

Handles like a sports car . Comfortable and reliable. Bought current one, a lease return with 18,000. Only had to replace the 7 year old batter. No repairs

Wonderfully unique and very well designed SUV.

Very efficient and fun car to drive. And the design is a great tribute to BMW. Best looking SUV I found. The reliability is in the works...

Great All Around Vehicle

Just bought a used 2013 BMW X3. For a seven year old vehicle it runs like a top and it’s more solid than my wife’s 2017.5 Nissan Rogue. It’s apparent at least to me that European cars are the best built cars in the world.
