The 2016 BMW X3 is a compact luxury SUV, part of the second generation (F25) which ran from 2011-2017. Key trims include the sDrive28i (rear-wheel drive), xDrive28i (all-wheel drive), and xDrive35i. Its popularity stems from its blend of sporty handling, a luxurious interior, and practical cargo space. New, prices ranged approximately from $40,000 to $48,000. It stands out due to its driving dynamics and BMW's brand prestige.
The Good

The 2016 BMW X3 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Performance is strong, particularly with the xDrive35i. Comfort is excellent, with a well-appointed interior. The design is classic BMW. While not the most efficient in its class, fuel economy is reasonable. The prestige of owning a BMW appeals to emotional buyers, while practicality and overall quality satisfy practical needs.

The Bad

Some known weaknesses of the 2016 BMW X3 include potential oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer models. Repair costs can be high due to the complexity of BMW engineering. Suspension components may also require attention over time, impacting ride quality.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW X3 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 BMW X3, and often applicable across this generation, include oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing. These leaks can lead to decreased engine performance and costly repairs if not addressed promptly. Some owners have also reported issues with the cooling system, including water pump and thermostat failures.
Another concern is the potential for timing chain issues, especially in higher-mileage examples. While not as prevalent as oil leaks, it's a significant repair. Electrical gremlins, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the iDrive system, are also sometimes reported.
Recalls for the 2016 X3 have been issued for various reasons, including potential issues with the front driveshaft and possible problems with the fuel pump relay. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the higher maintenance costs associated with European luxury vehicles. Regular maintenance, using quality parts, is crucial to mitigating these issues. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified BMW mechanic are highly recommended to identify any potential problems before purchase.

How long will the 2016 BMW X3 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 BMW X3 can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 10 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and addressing potential issues promptly are essential. Weaknesses over time include potential for oil leaks, suspension component wear, and the aforementioned timing chain concerns. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 BMW X3 comes with a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard features include BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and rain-sensing wipers. Entertainment features consist of a standard audio system, with optional upgrades available.
Driver-assistance features were available as optional packages. The Driver Assistance Package included lane departure warning and forward collision warning. A rearview camera was also available.
Optional features included a Technology Package with navigation, a head-up display, and BMW Online services. A Premium Package added leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and keyless entry.
Safety features include standard stability control, antilock brakes, and a suite of airbags.
The 2016 BMW X3 received good crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS. The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. NHTSA gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. It is important to note that ratings can vary depending on specific model configurations and testing methodologies.

2016 BMW X3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 BMW X3 ranged from approximately $40,000 to $48,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location, typically ranging from $14,000 to $25,000. Depreciation is significant in the first few years, then slows down. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options packages. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition with complete service records command higher prices.

2016 BMW X3 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW X3 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs are moderate but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance, especially at BMW dealerships or specialized shops, is expensive. Repairs can also be pricey due to the complexity of the vehicle and the cost of parts. While not the most economical choice, the driving experience and brand prestige can offset these costs for some buyers.

2016 BMW X3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 BMW X3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 BMW X3 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 BMW X3 competes against the Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Lexus NX, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. In terms of performance, the X3 (especially the xDrive35i) offers a sportier driving experience than most rivals, though the Q5 is a close competitor. Feature-wise, it's competitive, but some rivals like the Acura RDX offer more standard features for the price.
Reliability is where the X3 falls slightly behind. The Lexus NX and Acura RDX generally have better reliability ratings. The Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC are comparable in terms of reliability. Price-wise, the X3 is similar to the Q5 and GLC, but more expensive than the RDX. The NX offers good value.
Alternatives to the X3 include the Acura RDX (for better value and reliability), the Audi Q5 (for a similar driving experience and interior quality), and the Lexus NX (for excellent reliability and fuel economy). The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a similar alternative with a focus on luxury. Depending on priorities (sportiness vs. reliability, features vs. price), different alternatives may be more suitable. If reliability is a top concern, the Lexus or Acura are better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW X3 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 BMW X3 is ideal for drivers who prioritize a sporty driving experience and a luxurious interior in a compact SUV. It's worth buying if you're willing to accept potentially higher maintenance and repair costs. A used X3 can be a good value, but a pre-purchase inspection is essential. The xDrive35i trim offers the best performance, but the sDrive28i/xDrive28i are more fuel-efficient. If reliability is a primary concern, consider alternatives like the Acura RDX or Lexus NX. Overall, a well-maintained 2016 X3 can provide a rewarding ownership experience.

Wonderful vehicle

Our 2016 works flawlessly! We are so pleased we just purchased a very low mileage one with $15,000 in options which should make this one even more pleasurable,

Great car, highly recommend

I had this car for several years. In that time, it was a great car. The only downside to the car was the fact that it was a BMW, so I couldn't take it to any old mechanic shop to get the oil changed. The car has great pickup and breaking, and is great for long distance rides. It's a smaller SUV, but there's still plenty of room. And when I got into an accident, it functioned correctly and kept me and other safe. The airbags deployed like they were supposed to. The only reason I ever got rid of this car was because it was totaled.

Great vehicle platform

The most practical car we ever bought, combination of luxury and performance is the best we ever had. The X3 has great traction for winter and the 6 cylinder turbo has plenty of power and super smooth even in comfort mode.

Reliable car

Its a diesel and I had to add DEF within a couple of days of purchase because someone changed the oil but didn't add DEF per the manual. Otherwise, all great.

Most reliable car I've ever owned

Best car I've ever driven. With almost 62,000 miles it still drives like a new car. Not a single issue or defect in 24 months of driving. I just wish it had apps on their media display to synch my iphone navigaton map to the BMW media screen.

All diesel SUVs should be this good!

This is my first BMW but not my first SUV or my first diesel. This X3d is such a revelation to drive. Very comfortable driving position, very quiet and roomy interior, excellent fuel economy especially on long drives. I'm seeing 36+ MPGs which is unheard of in an AWD SUV. The styling is pretty unique, the driving enjoyment is far above most all other vehicles, and so far I'm extremely pleased to have bought a used BMW, despite what others may say.

Its sleek and stylish and keeps my family safe. I love all the features it has to offer and it hasn't needed anything except the routine maintenance.
