The Good
The 2016 BMW X3 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Performance is strong, particularly with the xDrive35i. Comfort is excellent, with a well-appointed interior. The design is classic BMW. While not the most efficient in its class, fuel economy is reasonable. The prestige of owning a BMW appeals to emotional buyers, while practicality and overall quality satisfy practical needs.
The Bad
Some known weaknesses of the 2016 BMW X3 include potential oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer models. Repair costs can be high due to the complexity of BMW engineering. Suspension components may also require attention over time, impacting ride quality.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW X3 Have?
Another concern is the potential for timing chain issues, especially in higher-mileage examples. While not as prevalent as oil leaks, it's a significant repair. Electrical gremlins, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the iDrive system, are also sometimes reported.
Recalls for the 2016 X3 have been issued for various reasons, including potential issues with the front driveshaft and possible problems with the fuel pump relay. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the higher maintenance costs associated with European luxury vehicles. Regular maintenance, using quality parts, is crucial to mitigating these issues. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified BMW mechanic are highly recommended to identify any potential problems before purchase.

How Does the 2016 BMW X3 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Reliability is where the X3 falls slightly behind. The Lexus NX and Acura RDX generally have better reliability ratings. The Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC are comparable in terms of reliability. Price-wise, the X3 is similar to the Q5 and GLC, but more expensive than the RDX. The NX offers good value.
Alternatives to the X3 include the Acura RDX (for better value and reliability), the Audi Q5 (for a similar driving experience and interior quality), and the Lexus NX (for excellent reliability and fuel economy). The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a similar alternative with a focus on luxury. Depending on priorities (sportiness vs. reliability, features vs. price), different alternatives may be more suitable. If reliability is a top concern, the Lexus or Acura are better choices.

Wonderful vehicleOur 2016 works flawlessly! We are so pleased we just purchased a very low mileage one with $15,000 in options which should make this one even more pleasurable,

Great car, highly recommendI had this car for several years. In that time, it was a great car. The only downside to the car was the fact that it was a BMW, so I couldn't take it to any old mechanic shop to get the oil changed. The car has great pickup and breaking, and is great for long distance rides. It's a smaller SUV, but there's still plenty of room. And when I got into an accident, it functioned correctly and kept me and other safe. The airbags deployed like they were supposed to. The only reason I ever got rid of this car was because it was totaled.

Great vehicle platformThe most practical car we ever bought, combination of luxury and performance is the best we ever had. The X3 has great traction for winter and the 6 cylinder turbo has plenty of power and super smooth even in comfort mode.

Reliable carIts a diesel and I had to add DEF within a couple of days of purchase because someone changed the oil but didn't add DEF per the manual. Otherwise, all great.

Most reliable car I've ever ownedBest car I've ever driven. With almost 62,000 miles it still drives like a new car. Not a single issue or defect in 24 months of driving. I just wish it had apps on their media display to synch my iphone navigaton map to the BMW media screen.

All diesel SUVs should be this good! This is my first BMW but not my first SUV or my first diesel. This X3d is such a revelation to drive. Very comfortable driving position, very quiet and roomy interior, excellent fuel economy especially on long drives. I'm seeing 36+ MPGs which is unheard of in an AWD SUV. The styling is pretty unique, the driving enjoyment is far above most all other vehicles, and so far I'm extremely pleased to have bought a used BMW, despite what others may say.

This car is so fun to drive! This car is incredibly fun to drive. It has great speed and pick up and I love the different engine settings, depending on the type of driving you're doing. Its sleek and stylish and keeps my family safe. I love all the features it has to offer and it hasn't needed anything except the routine maintenance.
