2021 BMW X3 Review: Dependable Small Luxury SUV With Some Higher Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.71
Based on 30 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The BMW X3, now in its third generation, is a compact luxury SUV that has consistently delivered a blend of practicality and driving pleasure. The 2021 model year continues this tradition. It's a 5-door SUV offered in trims like the sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and X3 M. New, the price range typically started from around $43,000 and extended to over $70,000 for the high-performance X3 M. Its balanced handling, powerful engine options, and upscale interior make it a popular choice in its class.
The Good

The 2021 BMW X3 boasts strong performance thanks to its potent engine options. It offers a comfortable ride with a well-designed interior. While not known for stellar fuel efficiency, it's decent for its class. The BMW badge adds prestige, appealing to emotional buyers, while its practicality and available technology satisfy those seeking a sensible choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2021 BMW X3 include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury brands. The infotainment system can be complex for some users. The base engine, while adequate, may feel underpowered for some. Some owners have reported issues with electronic components. Watch out for oil leaks, especially in higher mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2021 BMW X3 Have?

The 2021 BMW X3, like many modern vehicles, has had its share of reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the iDrive infotainment system, including software glitches and connectivity problems. Others have reported minor electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the power windows. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket, have been reported on some models, although this is more common on higher-mileage vehicles. There have been some recalls issued for the 2021 X3, including recalls related to potential issues with the fuel pump and the braking system. It's important to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information. Long-term reliability is generally considered average for a luxury SUV. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help to mitigate potential problems. Earlier model years of the X3 (prior to the current generation) had some concerns regarding oil consumption and certain engine components, but these issues appear to be less prevalent in the 2021 model year. However, as with any vehicle, a thorough pre-purchase inspection is recommended.

How long will the 2021 BMW X3 last?

With proper maintenance, the 2021 BMW X3 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Adhering to the recommended service schedule is crucial. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires are essential. Potential long-term weaknesses include the aforementioned oil leaks, especially as seals and gaskets age. The complex electronics can also be a source of issues over time. Properly maintaining the cooling system is also important to avoid overheating, which can cause major engine damage. Rust is generally not a major concern, but it's still wise to inspect for any signs of corrosion, particularly in areas with harsh winter conditions.

I love this car I bought it for my wife for her Birthday and she just loves it. The ride is great and all the extras it has it perfect
Josh
I love the car and at the same time I can't help to hate it. What I love about the car would be the luxurious interior, comfortable and quiet cabin, smooth ride, ease of access, and a few extra features that were put in as an add-on. What I don't like about this car would be the poor fuel economy for the 30i model, especially when compared to the B-58 engine. Apple carplay connection issues, no option for remote start unless I want to void warranty, and no option for the iDrive Recorder App. Exterior Styling - 8.5/10 Interior Styling - 9/10 Comfort - 9.5/10 Cargo space - 8.5/10 Driving smoothness - 9.5/10 Horsepower - 7/10 Fuel Economy - 3/10 It's been an overall fun car to get around in. It's easy to get in and out of, smooth on bumpy roads, and it is quiet. The fact that only 2022 models and newer offer remote start and iDrive recorder is a big disappointment. But I think my biggest disappointment would be the fuel economy. As I had the B-58 in the past and averaged out 11.5L/100km and in this X3 am averaging 13.5/100km which was worse than my pick up truck. I might not keep this car for long-term just because of how poor the fuel economy is.
ValC
I love that BMW makes a mid size suv that is part electric now. We purchased the x3 edrive. I do mostly local driving during the week so only need to fill up with gas once a month to every six weeks. Excellent car!
Negative Owner Reviews
Diego
They perform ok until 30,000 miles, (with very good luck). After then, money pit! Once they break; that’s it. They come out of the shop (dealer), and in a few weeks the same thing breaks; conclusion: BMW’s are not reparable, and they break very early in their life. This is my 5th BMW and I am definitely taking a break. Not to mention the horrible resale value! My hard head finally understood that BMW’s are the ultimate frustrating machine!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 BMW X3 is equipped with a robust suite of technology and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. Optional features include a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane keeping assist. The infotainment system, while feature-rich, can be complex for some users, requiring a learning curve.

Entertainment features include a standard HiFi sound system, with a Harman Kardon premium sound system available as an option. Safety features are comprehensive, with multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The 2021 BMW X3 received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation, indicating superior performance in crash tests and advanced safety technology. Overall, the 2021 X3 offers a well-rounded package of technology, entertainment, and safety features, making it a compelling choice in its segment.

2021 BMW X3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 BMW X3 ranged from approximately $43,000 for the base sDrive30i to over $70,000 for the X3 M. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim, but expect to find them ranging from the high $20,000s to the mid $50,000s. The X3 depreciates at a moderate rate, typical for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the premium sound system or driver-assistance package. Lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The M40i and X3 M trims tend to hold their value better than the base models due to their increased performance and desirability.

2021 BMW X3 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW X3 is generally considered costly to own compared to non-luxury SUVs. Insurance rates are higher due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs are moderate for the base engine but can be significant for the M40i and X3 M. Maintenance and repair costs are above average, with specialized parts and labor contributing to higher bills. Regular servicing at a qualified BMW mechanic is essential. Long-term ownership costs can be mitigated by preventative maintenance, but expect to pay more than for a mainstream vehicle.

2021 BMW X3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 BMW X3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 BMW X3 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X3 competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Acura RDX, and Volvo XC60. In terms of performance, the X3 M40i and X3 M offer superior power and handling compared to most rivals. The GLC offers a more luxurious interior, while the Q5 provides a balanced blend of comfort and technology. The Acura RDX stands out for its value and reliability, although it lacks the prestige of the German brands. The Volvo XC60 excels in safety and Scandinavian design. In terms of reliability, the Acura RDX generally outperforms the X3. The Lexus NX, although smaller, is another reliable alternative.

Feature-wise, the X3 is well-equipped, but its infotainment system can be less intuitive than some competitors. Price-wise, the X3 is competitive within its class. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura RDX or Lexus NX might be better choices. If luxury and comfort are paramount, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is a strong contender. For performance enthusiasts, the X3 M is hard to beat. Overall, the best alternative depends on individual priorities and preferences. Each of these rivals offer compelling reasons to choose them over the X3, it really depends on individual needs and wants.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 BMW X3 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X3 is an excellent choice for those seeking a well-rounded compact luxury SUV with a focus on driving dynamics. It's ideal for individuals or small families who appreciate a sporty driving experience and upscale features. Whether it's worth buying depends on budget and priorities. A used 2021 X3 can offer significant savings compared to a new model. Consider the M40i for enhanced performance, but be mindful of higher fuel and maintenance costs. If reliability is a major concern, explore alternatives like the Acura RDX or Lexus NX. Thoroughly inspect any used X3 and review its service history before making a purchase. For those who want the best of performance and luxury, it is worth the price, but you should be prepared for the higher maintenance costs.

The BM on BMW actually stands for Big Myth :/

They perform ok until 30,000 miles, (with very good luck). After then, money pit! Once they break; that’s it. They come out of the shop (dealer), and in a few weeks the same thing breaks; conclusion: BMW’s are not reparable, and they break very early in their life. This is my 5th BMW and I am definitely taking a break. Not to mention the horrible resale value! My hard head finally understood that BMW’s are the ultimate frustrating machine!

BMW's Abomination

Driving this vehicle is very exhausting as it wants to wander all over the road BUT BMW's service department "experts" say it is operating as designed. If this is true then it is a poorly designed vehicle!

Excellent Car

I love that BMW makes a mid size suv that is part electric now. We purchased the x3 edrive. I do mostly local driving during the week so only need to fill up with gas once a month to every six weeks. Excellent car!

Best Purchase for the Value and Cost

The BMW X3 is not a crossover that should be ignored. It is more than I expected coming from someone who has owned a 3 Series BMW for the last 6 years. Now I ask myself, why didn't I opt for the X3 much sooner, especially since it is more spacious with better features than my 3 series. Plus the price was only about $3,000 more for plenty more space and amenities. You owe it to yourself to test drive one soon!

I love it!

I have long admired this car on the road. When my lease was up on my 2918 Audi Q5 and Audi TT, I test drove several 2021 luxury cars and SUVs: Acura RDX, Audi Q5, A4, Cadillac XT4, BMW 430ix, BMW 330ix. I am so happy with my choice! It handles great. Has terrific acceleration and braking. The seats are really comfortable. It has an amazing turning radius. And the stereo cranks! Everyone compliments how smooth the ride is. The only thing I would change is for the speedometer to be digital, rather than a dial. I learned after the fact that it is only available with the Premium package.

Safest and Most Comfortable Car I Have Owned

The front seats are the most comfortable I have ever sat in. The numerous safety features are unbelievable, including self-park, automatic cruise control speed adjustment when sensing upcoming traffic, auto-hold while stopped in drive mode, crash avoidance, etc. I love the front dual clamshell styling. Control knob for music/maps is ergonomically located and easy to access. I love my BMW!!
