2013 Chrysler 200 Review: Unreliable Midsize Car With Serious Mechanical Issues

Rating: 4.36
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Chrysler 200 arrived amidst Chrysler's revitalization efforts. It's a mid-size car available as a sedan and a convertible. Model years spanned 2011-2014 for this generation. Key trims included LX, Limited, S, and Touring. The original pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $32,000. Its appealing styling and available V6 engine gave it a distinctive edge in a competitive segment.
The Good

The 2013 Chrysler 200 offers a stylish design and a comfortable ride, appealing to emotional buyers. The available V6 provides decent performance. Practically, it provides reasonable fuel economy, especially with the 4-cylinder engine, and represents a good value on the used market. It provides a lot of car for the money.

The Bad

The 2013 Chrysler 200's weaknesses include below-average reliability compared to its competitors. The 4-speed automatic transmission in base models feels outdated. Interior materials can feel cheap in some areas. Owners have reported issues with electrical components, transmission problems, and premature wear of certain parts, so careful inspection is key.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chrysler 200 Have?

The 2013 Chrysler 200 has been known to have several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the 6-speed automatic, are common. Owners have reported rough shifting, slipping, and even complete transmission failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the car's computer system, sensors, and lighting, are also prevalent. Some owners have experienced problems with the air conditioning system and the power windows. Premature brake wear is another concern, requiring more frequent replacements. Certain model years, including the 2011 and 2012, had more significant recalls related to the powertrain and electrical systems, and although the 2013 model year addressed some of these, underlying issues can still persist. Long-term reliability is a general concern. The Chrysler 200 tends to require more maintenance and repairs compared to more reliable competitors like Toyota or Honda. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic to identify potential problems before buying. Recalls for the 2013 model year included issues with the power steering and airbags. Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information.

How long will the 2013 Chrysler 200 last?

A well-maintained 2013 Chrysler 200 could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles with diligent maintenance. However, due to reported reliability issues, reaching these numbers requires proactive care. Key factors include regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential for rust, especially in regions with harsh winters, and the aforementioned electrical and transmission problems are more likely to surface as the car ages. The quality of interior materials may also degrade over time.
Positive Owner Reviews

This is my daily drive. Bought new in 2014 and have 93,000 miles. The car itself is gorgeous and looks sporty. For the time, this was luxury. Drives smooth, looks nice, interior has nice features, but in 2024 it is definitely 'dated' to say the least. No back up cameras, no drive assist or passing vehicle warnings, and no touch screen apps like the new vehicles have. But the heated seats work well, the AC is great, and it's fast and smooth. Don't get me wrong. I love my car. I've babied my car. The review of the vehicle is positive and I'd buy it again. But here are my complaints: 1. There is a huge delay between putting your foot down and getting those RPMs up. Response time is slow. This is definitely electronically intended. 2. For some reason, the window wipers fail. Been that way since day 1. Maybe this was a fault model. But it doesn't last long. Likely just a one off. 3. The battery and the serpentine belt are hidden behind the wheel well. It means you either have the tools and time at home, or you bring it into a shop. The design is ridiculous. 4. The spacers between the back windows deteriorate. I am not sure why its made of some different material than the rest of the exterior and window, but it's definitely a design flaw. Sadly, there arent many other vehicles, at least in 2024 that come close to the quality and design of the 2013 Chrysler 200 Limited with the same or similar price tag. Instead you're looking at vehicles 2-4x the price. I've enjoyed it a lot. I've received plenty of compliments over the years. Hopefully it will last me another 10 years. At 93,000 miles and now 12 years old, I've only had to replace the front rotors, the struts, and stabilizer bar.

I currently own my 200 with the 2.4L inline-4 making 172 hp and the 4-speed auto, and I have to say it is a great car, it handles really great for it's size. However, I will point out it does have slow acceleration with the transmission, but I did get used to it. I also like my 18-inch rims and tires because it does a great job sticking onto the road and maneuver through corners, unlike the 17-inches rims!! It did hold up reliability and interior materials really well, all that was done to it was oil changes. Other than that it did what it supposed to do. I had enough room in the cockpit since I was 6 inches, and surprisingly it does fit the whole family. The controls might be outdated nevertheless it's easy to find and accessible when you need it!! I would definitely recommend this car if you have a family of four!
Negative Owner Reviews

This car has too much power for its size. It drives horrible in rain and don't even attempt snow. It has an awful whining sound that comes from the engine that no mechanic could ever actually find and fix.
Jen
I bought this car November 2012 and it has been nothing but a nightmare. I had to take the car in 3 times for the remote start when it had 600-1000 miles on it. I have had the throttle body replaced at about 60,000 miles (died at a light) , alternator replaced at about 60,000 miles, it was leaking anti-Freeze had to take it in multiple times between 32,000-33,000 miles, chrome on the door handle is pealing off ( i have cut my finger), the passenger window wouldn't roll up, had to have the driver module replaced, the wiper hose broke so I had no washer fluid, I hear popping in the front end however Chrysler says its fine, I hear knocking in the glove box randomly. The paint on the passenger mirror is chipping off. I will NEVER buy another Chrysler car again!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chrysler 200 came with a decent array of technology for its time. Standard features included a basic audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, Uconnect infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium sound system. Navigation was available as an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included available features like electronic stability control and traction control. Safety features included standard front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and tire-pressure monitoring.

Optional features included heated front seats, automatic climate control, and a sunroof.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the specific test, but the 2013 Chrysler 200 generally received mixed ratings. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It is important to check both the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most accurate and up-to-date crash test information, as methodologies and ratings can change over time. The S trim often included unique interior and exterior styling enhancements, contributing to its sporty appeal. The available Uconnect system offered convenient features like voice command and smartphone integration (though limited compared to modern systems).

2013 Chrysler 200 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chrysler 200 ranged from approximately $20,000 to $32,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices range significantly, from roughly $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Chrysler 200 has experienced substantial depreciation due to its average reliability reputation. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it's a base model or a higher trim level with desirable options like the V6 engine and leather interior. Models in excellent condition with low mileage command higher prices, but overall, depreciation is significant.

2013 Chrysler 200 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2013 Chrysler 200 are typically average for a mid-size sedan. Fuel costs will vary depending on the engine, with the V6 being more expensive to fuel. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Long-term ownership costs can be significant, especially if major repairs are needed. Overall, the 2013 Chrysler 200 is not considered the most economical vehicle to own due to its potential for higher repair bills.

Insurance for a 2013 Chrysler 200 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Convertible with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chrysler 200 Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2013 Chrysler 200 competes with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of performance, the 200's available V6 is competitive, but the base 4-cylinder lacks refinement compared to the Camry or Accord. Feature-wise, it offered a decent array of options for its time, but some rivals provided more advanced technology. Reliability is where the 200 falls short. The Camry and Accord consistently score higher in reliability ratings. Price-wise, the 200 is often more affordable on the used market, making it appealing to budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry, known for its reliability and fuel efficiency; the Honda Accord, offering a balance of performance, comfort, and reliability; and the Ford Fusion, with its stylish design and available hybrid powertrain. The Mazda6 is another compelling option, offering a sportier driving experience. While the Chrysler 200 might be a tempting choice due to its lower price point, buyers should carefully weigh the potential for higher repair costs and consider more reliable alternatives for long-term ownership.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chrysler 200 a Good Convertible?

The 2013 Chrysler 200 is ideal for budget-minded buyers who prioritize style and features over long-term reliability. It might be worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a clean vehicle history report and have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic. The V6-powered models, especially the "S" trim, offer a more engaging driving experience. However, be prepared for potentially higher maintenance and repair costs. Consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord if reliability is your top priority. Buying new is not an option now, so focusing on a carefully inspected used model is key if considering this car.

Bought my 200 last year in January from a dealership .

Bought my 200 last year in January from a dealership . It has been nothing but a money pit since have been thru 5 sets of hub assemblies since getting it 3 of the sets within the last 6 months . 2 sets of tires and 3 sets of brakes. Only accident that I'm aware of with this car is the one I was in . But I'm starting to assume it's been in another one before I bought it because there's no reason I should be having these issues. Chryslers are pieces of junk and I'll never own another one after this one is paid off . Oh and the transmission has started going out at only 130k miles on it Γ°ΕΈΒ₯Β²

CHRYSLER 200 V6 LIMITED

I don't know what some of these people are talking about. I bought the 200 Standard V6 engine, 200+ horsepower, used from a dealership which bought rentals and resells them. That was in 2015 and after owning a V8 Jeep Cherokee. I was afraid of it being slow on the acceleration but it just took off during the test drive, great passing power and entering a busy highway without being sluggish on pressing the gas pedaI.'ve had little to no problems and aside from basic maintenance. It looks good, drives great, very powerful V6 engine. Car gets 20 mpg local driving and 30 mpg highway.

Inexpensive and Reliable

Bought the car used from a rental company back in 2014. It's the V6. I am still satisfied with the car, the engine and transmission have offered no problems, it's quite fast and for a V-6 the fuel economy is impressive. Having said all that the cons are its rather small for a mid-sized car( if size is important to you) and changing the headlight bulbs and battery is difficult. Also while interior is comfortable for the driver, it is pretty basic and no thrills.

Stability and handling is very good.

Bought this car for my wife to commute, however we have taken it on several road trips. The cars handling and stability are exceptional, and the acceleration onto a freeway is impressive! (284 horsepower V6). It has a 6 speed automatic transmission that is a definite plus especially on varying downhill grades ea: you can shift up and down the spectrum manually by pulling the shift lever left or right (impressive!) So far we have not had any issues with it (knock on wood).
